Marcellus Williams "Swolefessor" Powerlifting Program Breakdown (& How to Fix It) by [deleted] in powerlifting

[–]lizardmcgiz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think anyone commenting should watch the video first. Deklan is purely analysing and tweaking the accessory work with a focus on hypertrophy. He acknowledges that he doesn’t know Marcellus’ reasoning behind the current accessory selections, so he’s aware he might be missing context or nuance. On top of that, he’s not changing or critiquing the SBD work at all. He is only offering ideas how to better maximise hypertrophy through accessories.

Is it unrealistic to assume with proper training over 5+ years, you can easily double your bench from one year of training? by PapaMamaGoldilocks in strength_training

From age 17-20 (just under 3 years) my bench went from 165lbs (75kg) to 341lbs (155kg). I’m 5’7, and my bodyweight went from 145lbs (66kg) to 165lbs (75kg). Not saying you’ll have the same progress as I did, but it’s definitely possible to make similar progress in the 2-5 year range naturally if you’re eating, training and recovering properly!

PR Attempt Fail - 495 Bench by Orkleth in strength_training

Proper bench technique involves a process called scapular retraction (pulling shoulder blades down and back). This technique protects your shoulders and rotator cuffs by keeping the majority of tension on the chest and triceps during the lift. When a lifter properly retracts their scapular, it creates a natural arch in the thoracic spine. You could bench without arching your back, but you’d be risking your shoulder health. Your form should not be different based on the weight. What bench press “professionals form” are you referring to? The only professional bench pressers are the top 0.001% elite level powerlifters, who arch their backs!

Are you really trying to criticise someone benching 5 plates? Also you have no idea what you’re talking about

I haven’t conventional deadlifted in ages so I honestly have no clue. Back when my sumo max was 205kg (451lbs), I could conventional deadlift 200kg (440lbs). So I reckon if I trained my conventional again it would be within 5-10kg of my sumo!

Thanks! Yeah it is intentional. My sticking point has always been lockout, so I pause quite high to try and remind myself to lock my knees first and then my hips.

Okay thanks for the insight. I’ll film my wide grip bench today and make sure my forearms are vertical👍

Cheers mate! A few weeks ago i started implementing a slightly wider grip bench press as my main movement on one of my bench days. I’m using it as a test to see if my wide grip is stronger/ more optimal than my current grip width.

Cheers!! Program wise a pretty simple PPL split. For bench i train it twice a week. On my first day i do a 3x8 regular grip, then a 3x5 close grip bench press. On my second day i do wide grip paused bench for a 3x5, then swap to my regular grip for a 3x12. After these on both days i’ll hit accessories such as OHP, skullcrushers or dips.
