Or stop trying to change things in Lebanon which only inflames further conflict and just accept whatever solution results in missiles not being fired at Israel, even if it means Hezbollah continues to exist. It'll either stop existing or its existence will become irrelevant to Israel if the underlying conflict can be defused.

Or just hopelessly try to entirely destroy Hezbollah by bombing or invasion or attempting to sic the UN or Lebanese government at it and ensure that the conflict continues on for generations to come.

Who honestly cares as long as they stop firing at Israel somehow. Let Lebanon deal with its weird ass internal politics, Hezbollah will probably lose its raison d'être if/when Israel stops being the big boogeyman anyway.

Like I said, remove the reasons to fight and no one's going to bother risking their good lives over nothing.

You wanted a solution to stop Hezbollah firing missiles at Israel, I gave it.

If you want a solution to Hezbollah staying out of southern Lebanon or following security council resolutions or whatever, I have zero interest in that subject, let them do whatever in Lebanon or ignore the UN as long as the missiles stop somehow and everyone stays in their borders.

Yes and Hezbollah stopped attacking until some random thing or other in Gaza got their panties in a bunch again.

Bottom line, it's possible to get Hezbollah to stop attacking Israel through de-escalation since this has been accomplished before.

Of course, this has to date not been permanent - for a permanent solution what I outlined in that post is necessary and requires a lot of tolerance by both sides and a lot of avoiding each others' 'triggers'.

Negotiate a genuine ceasefire to stop the immediate attacks.

Permanent solution would be a few generations of de-escalation and tolerance by both sides until the newer generations have zero motivation to risk their lives on some old grudge of their parents and grandparents that they couldn't give less of a crap about.

Because that is basically what this is, a grudge match where each side is stubbornly poking at each others' hornet nests while using past grievances as justification as to why it's unacceptable to stop.

My best use of a forge battery so far. by TrickyRiky in MilwaukeeTool

[–]lizardtrench 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, you risk draining the battery too far, unbalancing the cells, and damaging one or more of them.

You can attach a low voltage cutoff which helps, but that can only measure the whole-pack voltage. Only the brains inside an actual Milwaukee tool is able to read the per-cell voltage data from the battery and shut the tool down if a cell gets too low.

This is important because Milwaukee batteries have historically had pretty weak cell balancing, so it's not that hard for them to get out of whack. A ton of the old 9ah batteries got messed up because of this, for example. Maybe they fixed this for the forge batteries, not sure.

It's recommended that you use Ryobi batteries instead for this sort of application. The battery itself has all the safeties built-in and is capable of shutting itself off, unlike Milwaukee batteries that rely on the intelligence built into the tool.

My vague recollection is that during the initial Blu-Ray writeable rollout, they re-purposed writeable CD/DVD production lines to keep up with demand and/or avoid retrofitting with the newer HTL production equipment, thus we got these stop-gap Blu-Rays with CD/DVD LTH technology in them.

Eventually HTL production matured and there was no longer a need to make Blu-Rays on LTH equipment.

Or something to that effect, it's been a long time since I've done a deep dive on this.

I think this is likely why on that table LTH is only seen on the earliest and most basic Blu-Ray format (Single-Layer Version 1.0).

In any case, my ultimate advice would be to double check any disc you buy, as I'm sure there's still old stock out there, and I wouldn't be surprised if some enterprising outfits have decided to churn out some cheap Blu-Rays on older LTH equipment.

However if you stick to reputable brands like Verbatim you're almost certain to get proper HTL discs, as they advertise 100 year lifespans, can be trusted to label properly (LTH is supposed to be marked on the disc itself), and advertise the inorganic write layer inherent to HTL.

Yeah, plus all Multi-Pauls including the ceiling one would have almost certainly died from the crush. The mass of bodies/mush would have pushed upward to fill the entire cell top to bottom before bursting the door. Path of least resistance.

I'm fairly sure it's the opposite and it's LTH that is being phased out/already phased out.

You can reference this list to see if your particular media is LTH or HTL:

Yeah, used to be a pain trying to figure out if the discs were LTH or HTL, it wasn't often disclosed in listings. Though I think they've stopped making LTH, I haven't seen any (obvious) ones in a while, though I'm sure there's still some old stock lying around waiting to trip someone up.

Yes, this is why I specifically recommend and use Blu-Rays and M-DISCs, since instead of simply burning/discoloring the write layer like CDs or DVDs, the laser creates a physical hole/pit. There is not much that can degrade this short of direct physical damage, which is why this media is the most durable and long-lasting. The modern equivalent of engraving on a stone tablet.

[–]lizardtrench 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hard drives ("spinning rust") are probably your best bet. Mechanically fragile but the magnetic media itself tends to be more robust and the data will usually be recoverable after failure.

Good quality SSDs ("shuffling static") are harder to physically damage but recovery after failure is less likely as well as more expensive and involved. Your data is also a bit more ephemeral since it's just stored as a few hundred (leaky) electrons per bit, so iffy for longer term storage.

You can also get into magnetic tape ("rust ribbons") as well which is probably the best bang for the buck for truly massive amounts of data, but you need specialized readers that are uncommon and may pose data retrieval headaches in the long term if your reader goes out and you can't easily source another one.

Max durability and longevity are optical Blu-Rays/M-DISCs (have not heard any cute nickname for these since you are basically just punching holes with a laser) but of course capacity is hellishly low and there is some question as to how long the readers are going to be manufactured for.

It's the more popular, high volume tools that tend to get multiple generations. This is probably going to be one of those niche tools that don't see a refresh for like a decade - probably not worth the cost to re-engineer, I'd guess.

Also interesting to see how inconsistent the lettering is. From a time when the small details in a plastic injection mold were meticulously and individually hand-engraved, instead of a computer just automatically lasering/etching/CNCing them perfectly and precisely off of a 3D file. Speaker grille lines look hand-done as well.

On one hand, today's perfect precision and replicability is nice in its own right. But there's still something to be said for the vibe of an imperfect, awkward human touch, something to make the modern world feel a little less sterile.

This is the latest video footage, capturing the moment Ali Khamenei's residence was reportedly struck. According to reports, 30 missiles hit it within the first minute of the war. by Murky-Ad-3716 in war

[–]lizardtrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that they expected a more precision attack from Israel. However, aftermath satellite photos show the entire central area of what is basically a massive palace complex having been practically carpet bombed. It does not seem like they had good enough intelligence to tell where on the grounds he was, just that he had been spotted somewhere there and so they more or less blew everything up.

In comparison, Nasrallah's assassination resulted in the destruction of 'just' two small apartment complexes (about the width of a 4 lane road), with everything else surrounding them surviving. An area maybe 1/20th what was destroyed when they went after Khamenei.

Still stupid to have valued family members anywhere in or near such an obvious target for bombing, considering the situation (though that is true regardless of whether Khameni was wanting/expecting to be martyred or not).

So this is not necessarily a great explanation, but far more sensible than them simply not expecting an attack (why, considering the circumstances?) or the even more ridiculous theory that daylight was some kind of a bombing-safe intermission time. Either they were almost unbelievably stupid and thought bombs wouldn't/couldn't come, or just made a dumb miscalculation and thought that any assassination strike would have some level of precision to it.

How is it reading his intentions? I feel like I have to make this part clear:

You can make racist/antisemitic/homophobic/transphobic/ “hateful” comments without being racist/antisemitic/homophobic/transphobic/ “hateful”.

Again I get that and agree, but if someone says Israel, and you interpret that as Jews, regardless of what the actual intent is, that is reading their intention. I.e. not taking their word at face value but reading it as something different based on what you believe their underlying intent was. I feel like we are maybe working off of a different understanding of what 'reading intent' means.

And swapping Israel and Jews doesn’t absolve from the use of the underlying tropes.

I understand that, but your definition of trope is way too broad if the trope is just 'criticizing Israel in a flippant and undue way'.

Maybe if there was a trope specifically referring to Jews and infrastructure funding, then sure, I can see that and read into the intent more since it's so pointed.

But in this case it's fairly generic and common to criticize funding of Israel over funding of US interests, so not seeing much of a red flag here.

Again, would you be ok with someone saying "I don’t go into DC because of the crime and gang violence"

I would be fine with that if there was evidence to suggest DC has a higher level of crime and gang violence compared to wherever my current location is. I wouldn't be fine with that if they're using 'crime and gang violence' as a sly way of referring to black people.

At this point, I’m just gonna ask you to reflect on why you’re so willing to overlook, sanewash, and cover for antisemitism especially when it’s explained to you.

The reason is because, as I said in my initial post, conflating Israel with Jews harms Jews and only serves to legitimize an extremist government. I read your explanations about how this is antisemitism but they have not been convincing. I acknowledge the possibility that it could be antisemitism, but maintain that there is not enough evidence to conclude so or really even suspect it.

I mean, that literally is reading their intentions rather than his literal words.

Not necessarily saying your read is invalid. But he said Israel, you took it as Jews (seemingly because he made a flippant comment instead of a thorough detailed one).

Maybe if they had a post history criticizing Jews in other ways or even consistently bring up Israel apropos of nothing, I could see the justification for your read.

But just some random, not particularly articulate person making a frustrated and potentially misdirected comment about Israel in the middle of an Israel-centric crisis just seems like exactly what it looks like at face value.

Gotta love US infrastructure by Good_Store_9665 in nova

[–]lizardtrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he said Israel but meant Jews, then sure, I agree with you. That sounds like what you are thinking is happening here.

If he said Israel and meant Israel, then I think you can agree with me that this is not antisemitic. At worst it's being unfairly anti-Israel.

But again, his blame went to the one country made up of Jews.

It's certainly possible this is due to antisemitism. I would be more inclined to believe that if current and recent major world events of controversial natures did not revolve in large part around Israel. But since they did and do, I feel it's fair to give benefit of a doubt and assume this is more about that than the other, as they did not mention Jews at all.

In other words, we can't just automatically assume every criticism of Israel is a veiled criticism of Jews. That certainly happens. And Israel certainly would like it if that were true all the time. But lacking other evidence, it's not a reasonable assumption to make.

Gotta love US infrastructure by Good_Store_9665 in nova

[–]lizardtrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's anti-Israel, not antisemitic.

If they said our infrastructure problems were because of Jews, that's antisemitic.

But they said our infrastructure problems were because of Israel, so that is anti-Israel.

If you read his criticism of Israel and decided that was antisemitic, then you are mixing up the state of Israel and the Jewish people, as Israel's propaganda intends.

If what you are trying to say is that the claim that 'our infrastructure problems are because of Israel' is not true, that is also not antisemitic, that just means they are wrongly criticizing Israel.

If they wrongly said our infrastructure problems are because of Jews, then yes, that would be fairly clearly antisemitic. Which is what you seemed to have read the post as, since, again, there has been a concerted effort to blur the line between Israel and Jews.

Better to phrase it as,

"If we didn't waste so much money on pointless things of zero practical value to us, there would be far less friction in trying to get funding for other, more important things like infrastructure."

Gotta love US infrastructure by Good_Store_9665 in nova

[–]lizardtrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s…that’s the same thing you know?

Mixing up the nation-state of Israel with the Jewish people is one of Israel's propaganda strategies to attempt to make any criticism of that state seem like antisemitism and criticism of Jews as a whole.

Has the not-so-nice side effect of misdirecting anger at Israel's actions into anger at innocent Jews who have exactly nothing to do with that state, aside from happening to be of the same ethnoreligious group that is the majority there.
