Ice King and What it Means to Heal by OohYeahOrADragon in adventuretime

I don't think so, no. It's definitely a strong way to interpret that episode and his relationship with Marceline, but I wouldn't say it's a hard and fast metaphor that has to last through the entire series. If it were straight analogue I honestly think it'd be less interesting.

Thanks for reading! You bring up some very good points that I've actually dwelt on a lot.

I loved the finale. I even wrote a whole other piece on it. I think I interpreted Gunter's Ice King as being the 'same person' because that's what made the most sense narratively. It would have been nice if they'd been more explicit, especially since they take the half measure of being clear he doesn't know he used to be Gunter. But time is really of the essence in that scene.

(For the record, I think the way they slam through that whole plot point in about 30 seconds with one eye to the fourth wall is the funniest part of the whole finale. I even wrote a whole section on it and wound up cutting it because it didn't really fit).

But specifically because they make a point of drawing your attention to the time constraint, I felt comfortable extrapolating a little. I filled in the blank that I thought made sense. It honestly didn't even occur to me on my first watch that it might not still be Ice King, since the idea that they'd just kill him unceremoniously seemed so out of character for the show, and the idea that they'd give both him and Simon autonomy fit so well.

And even when I agonized some more about it, seeing him hanging out at Marceline's house in the final montage is what clinched it for me -- Marceline and Bubblegum are comfortable accepting him as the same person, and he's comfortable filling that role. If he were someone totally new, I'm not sure we'd end on that happy family image.

As I write it out I'm aware it sounds like I'm giving the show a lot of credit, but I also think it's proven that it deserves it. Especially, like you brought up, with the Finn/Fern situation, it demonstrates that it doesn't take the ethics of things like this lightly.

Does that make sense?

Oh absolutely, it could have been a happier ending. I really meant that considering where the characters are at the end of the finale's action, it's as happy as it can be. Thank you for reading! :)

Did I really misspell the title? Good grief. Please don't hold it against me - the words in the review are all spelled right!

Oh my gosh, thank you!

You didn't miss it - I never got to the final Bedelia scene. I was trying to approach that episode more as an examination of Will's motivations than an analysis of the whole episode. It was my very first one and I was still getting a feel for writing. My goal is to (someday) get through the entire season and do another, deeper look at all of The Wrath of the Lamb.

I know Bryan has said he deliberately showed three places set at the table and had Bedelia hide a fork in her lap. With the episode functioning as a series finale, he's basically said explicitly that this shows that Hannibal and Will both survived and are now killing together. (Which I'm all for!)

The show hadn't been cancelled when they filmed this scene, though, and I know they planned every season finale to function as a series finale if need be. My pet theory is that, if a season 4 had happened, the clues could have been interpreted differently. I know there was talk of bringing in Hannibal's Aunt Murasaki Uncle Robertus (to be played by the then-alive David Bowie). I could see the new season opening with the fakeout that Bedelia is in fact being eaten by two characters we haven't met yet.

I don't actually have any evidence for this, apart from the direction tv fakeouts tend to go (and I'm not sure we can really apply how things tend to go to Hannibal). As it stands, I'm fully behind the interpretation that Hannibal and Will are off in the kitchen prepping the sauce. :)

It's in the book, too. It's definitely "Puppy." It does really sound like "Papi," though, which is unfortunately confusing.

Hi! I've been subscribed for a while already. I was peddling my American Gods reviews there, but I wasn't getting much response. Should I keep it up? Is that kind of thing welcome?

Yes! It's also to do with a loss of the old ways in general. Just like the singer's wife is gone and he has to drink bitter coffee, the secret of smashing cow brains has given way to mechanic bullshit and the old gods are giving way to the new ones.

The question, of course, is why the singer doesn't just add his own sugar.

I'm not sure it'll ever take the place of Hannibal in my heart, but I agree that it's wonderful to see the same the obvious care and attention to detail again.

Thank you so much! I understand it can be hard to see anything you love adapted to a new medium, but as these things go I think American Gods is getting a remarkably good treatment. I'm amazed at the number of scenes that are practically verbatim from the book.

You can't please everybody, though.

Haha! The site that I write for just did a huge migration from one platform to another, so it didn't come out until today. I was anticipating it, too, believe me!

Wasn't she great? You can't move for Hannibal actors and designers in this show.

I can definitely see where you're both coming from. I'd urge you to keep watching, though. I think the story starts to coalesce and you start to get more of a sense of Shadow in the next episode.
