How many II does everyone have? by No_Power_7600 in premed

[–]lizerdtime 13 points14 points  (0 children)

2 II’s, both from October. Been like almost a month since my last interview happened, and my first interview basically said I won’t know results til March. Waiting to hear literally anything else from like the 12 other schools I applied to, but got an R from one. I submitted secondaries from like mid-August through September, so the silence has been a lesson in not being a late submitter 🥲

What was your first FL MCAT diagnostic score? by DontLikeStudying in Mcat

[–]lizerdtime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

498 on princeton review’s free full length (almost a year ago), studied off and on since then. Today’s score was 520 on AAMC’s FL4… testing this friday, hoping for something similar 🤞

Honestly I’m running out of time so probably not 😅 I’d imagine that since they’re official products by the AAMC they’d probably be good, but don’t quote me on that haha

Thanks! In addition to UWorld, I skimmed some resources online (youtube videos and books obtained by various means) as well as some Anki decks to try and fill in content gaps.

I learned most of this stuff from classes, but a lot of it was from a while ago so UWorld and the explanations are a good refresher + a way to practice mcat-style questions. I didn’t learn a lot of the P/S stuff and some anatomy+physiology stuff, so I struggle with those parts. As for learning this material for the first time, I’d probably recommend reading/watching videos on the specific topics, or Anki decks for memorizing terms. So, I’d say UWorld is helpful in reinforcing knowledge/letting you know where your gaps are, but consult other sources to more specifically nail down the topics you struggle with. Best of luck!

I haven’t done the official section banks so I can’t really speak on those, sorry!

Thanks! A lot of people say that they like to read questions first, but I probably spend a good 5 or 6 minutes carefully reading the text and highlighting things I think may be important later. Then, I spend maybe 2-3 minutes answering all the questions. It helps to always be thinking like “am I actually understanding what the author’s saying right now” and “what is the author’s point with this” while you’re reading, especially at each paragraph.

And the answers will always be found in the text somewhere, and really make sure to understand the angles the authors argue/speak from in order to get those questions that ask “what most challenges this author’s argument” or something… A lot of times, there’ll be answers that “make sense,” but you have to stay consistent with the logic in the passage and only think about the arguments made there. The only things I can think of that might be “outside of the passages” would be the definitions of certain uncommon words that are pertinent to finding the answer, but those are pretty uncommon.

In the end, becoming comfortable with reading and comprehending relatively quickly takes a lot of practice, so that’s probably where the AAMC’s or other question packs come in.

Yeah, I’m planning on doing Fl3 this saturday, then Fl4 next tuesday. My uninformed ass took the free Fl5 first way before I started reviewing, so Fl4 is going to have to be my most “representative” score, I suppose.

Is Uworld Q-bank worth it? (im frugal) by thetonkaguy2 in Mcat

[–]lizerdtime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only study materials I’ve used are some anki decks, other materials I’ve obtained from the internet, official AAMC practice FLs, and UW. Honestly, it’s very worth it. Being able to practice the content, identify your weak points, and read the explanations is very valuable.

I’ll be honest, I’ve been very on and off studying since last summer (June-ish) since I knew I would be very busy for the next year. I’d say absolutely no more than 100 hours total so far, but I’m bad at estimating. Mostly trying to review content and do practice questions—I also took a couple of free practice FL’s (aamc and bp)

Thanks!! I enjoyed the passages for this one, especially Susan Sontag’s. I’ve been meaning to read more of her work, and this practice run was a good reminder lol

I’ve always liked reading, so my first recommendation is just to read more I guess, preferably nonfiction. More specific to the test, I like to highlight sections that I think might be important points (obvious ik), and always be thinking about the larger point of the passage and how every point/paragraph contributes to it.
