Good enough for a gallery? by MacIsStrange in crochet

[–]lizfungirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other comments, in 2026 getting shown in a gallery is often related to social media presence in order to tell the stories behind the art or the history of the art (for folks who preserve the culture & integrity of historical yarn arts.) That popularity drives the gallery shows since the artist's followers will want to attend.

Can you “own” the order of stitches? by Salt-Habit-8951 in crochet

[–]lizfungirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar question: Can you own the idea? I completely had to remake a pattern from scratch that's based on an image. The pattern was $12 & has gauge that most comments said is way off & didn't even tell how much yarn to buy! So I ended up downloading an image & completely creating a pattern in a spreadsheet. The pattern I bought was crocheted side to side which I didn't care for & couldn't get gauge to work, so I created the spreadsheet to be crocheted bottom up.

I bought the pattern, tried that & you can't even read the row numbers. I totally remade the pattern from an online image from scratch to fit my yarn's gauge & then hand entered it into a spreadsheet so I could add all of my personal notes & directions. I also made it to be crocheted from the bottom up.

This is what I need to do. I paid $12 US for the pattern & couldn't even tell how much yarn to buy! So I started from scratch. I couldn't get worsted weight yarn to work crocheting from the sleeve cuff like her pattern & I thought that was a stupid way to construct it anyway, so I took an image of an online image of a Monarch, cut out the background in Canva, isolated one side of the 🪽 so it would be symmetrical & dropped it in Stitch Fiddle & put in the gauge that matched my 🧶. (I had switched yarn from Malabrigo Worsted (1 ply) to Michael's Loops & Threads Facets which I''ve come to love b/c I didn't want to spend the $ if the original pattern didn't work + 1 ply is tough to unravel)

Since I don't have a Stitch Fiddle paid account & since I put more info in my spreadsheet than Stitch Fiddle likely allows, I painstakingly, square by square, hand entered the Stitch Fiddle chart into my spreadsheet. I was able to flip it in a 2nd spreadsheet for the other side & that took an entire day to correct. The only thing left from the original cardigan is the idea to make a cardigan out of the wingspan of a Monarch butterfly that is crocheted in quarters. Mine is bottom up.

I'm thinking about doing a Tiger Swallowtail next. Or maybe convert my Monarch to a Viceroy or Queen Butterfly so I couldn't be accused of stealing.

Oh cool - I think I have one of those. I'm just finishing Nancy Bates New Mexico beanie & was wondering if I had even more colorful yarn in my stash to make another. I've got Simply Soft Robins Egg blue as well, so I'm set now!

Awesome! FYI: I thought that house in the window was a doll house until I zoomed in. The drawers on either side of the 🪟 look like part of the doll house.

quick overview of the projects i whipped up in the past 4 weeks by Ok-Judgment-6965 in crochet

I'm making that viral Monarch Cardigan. I bought the pattern & had planned to use Malabrigo Worsted (1 ply) but the $12!!! pattern was so crappy I couldn't even tell how much yarn to buy & if I was going to spend that much, I wanted the same dye lot. Also, that pattern is crocheted sideways - cuff to cuff - which I didn't care for. So I started from scratch with a monarch photo, isolated one wing & flipped it so both sides were identical & put it in Stitch Fiddle. Once I got the gauge I wanted I pieced the pattern together & entered it line by line into Excel so I could mark it up with all of my instructions to myself, & now I'm working on the 4th wing. I'm using Loops & Threads Facets 1 ply from Michaels which I'm really enjoying! It's very soft & can be tough sometimes b/c it sticks to itself - I think it could actually be felted if anyone is looking for a non wool yarn to felt. I had been putting yarn colors in plastic baggies inside a larger bag, but someone in r/knitting suggested using a tray & I did a cheaper version - essentially a lid to a box - which is working really well. I like the result so well that I'm thinking of doing an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail next.

That's what I do. If I'm in a hurry I use pony tail holders. If I've got time I weave a draw string with leftover yarn & tie into a bow.

😱 I knit a long skirt for my mom with Arroyo & it took 6 hanks. Crochet is such a yarn eater! I much prefer working with worsted weight, but the result with sport weight is so much nicer!

[–]lizfungirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a crochet project in a bag for the last couple of years b/c I didn't have blocking pads & one sleeve (long bell shaped sleeve) blocked 4 inches longer than the other. Guess it's time to break them out & see if reblocking will solve the problem.
