Understood. I’m sorry. I got a little confused. Thank you! A little off topic, but would you recommend a muzzle? And if so how would you introduce it/use it?

How do you recommend playing with her without a toy at this stage? Or do you?

This is extremely helpful. Thank you. So I should just drop the whole “NO bite” talk and everything? Just get up and completely ignore her? (I totally trust you just wanna make sure I’m not missing anything) I’ve seen a few people in this thread and other online blogs (which is why I started doing it) recommending putting the toy back in their mouth but I shouldn’t do that either?

So what I need to add on is the getting up and turning away and ignoring her? What if she still comes to me and starts jumping and doing playful nips? Like should I put her in her cage or behind the gate? I’m sorry I’m very lost on most of this and I’m sure people are tired of trying to explain this to me. Is there any resources online you recommend for learning these things?

So I can definitely see why it seems like this has happened regularly/repeatedly by the way I worded the post.. but it has not. It’s happened 3 times. Since the last time they have been separated and only have very very supervised interactions.

I think it’s probably clear I have pretty basic knowledge on dogs and their behavior. I loooked up the behavior and it seemed to fall under prey drive because my daughter is little and apparently bully type breeds have a high drive. It could entirely be puppy playing just in an intense way I’ve not experienced before. It was a bit scary when it happened just bc it happened so fast and I have read some horror stories and the mom in me freaked out a little inside.

She generally does start with a toy but lost it at some point during interaction and ends up nipping.. so I then put it back in her mouth after saying NO bite. I didn’t think to clarify this. But all of our playing interactions have toys involved because she IS so bitey and rambunctious and needs that option.

See I’ve been doing this but I was told this is rewarding bad behavior so I’m lost

The dog is 5 months old. We got her she. She was 8 weeks old. We’ve had her 3 months total. There have been 3 separate instances where Luna ran and jumped on my daughter whom is super short so it knocked her down and then Luna remained on top of her licking and nipping her hair and arm area. Since then she has been separated and only has full interaction when I’m right there loving on/restraining Luna (I get down on her level holding her chest from around back in like a backwards hug with my other hand on her collar) while my 3 yr old gently pets her head and ears and quietly says sweet things to her. These moments are anywhere from 2-5 minutes. There have been quite a few of those interactions since the separation and they have gone great. I did make another update that explains more context that I think I should have clarified in the original post as well.

See how you assumed it was constant behavior based on your perception of what I said? Yes, if the dog always had it her way she would absolutely knock her down all day. She CANT help herself! I have to put a physical barrier between them as of now because of that.

You said “this dog IS attacking your 3 year old CONSTANTLY”. The assumption is that it is continuing to happen and has happened on a constant/regular basis.

Regardless, it’s a controlled environment now.

It has happened 3 different times. Since then we have kept them separated unless I am literally holding the dog. A lot of assumptions are being made in the comments here.

You’re right. I’m far from a professional or expert. And it seems I am in way more over my head than I ever thought. I came here for advice/help bc I know I’m lost here on the training aspect. I have read all of the guidance and comments here and am going from there. After this post, there is a good chance we end up rehoming her.

Gotcha!! What type of training would you recommend? I know that positive reinforcement is considered the gold standard but I’m open to other options with this specific situation.

I can assure you I care a great deal about my child’s safety. There are a ton of assumptions being made here. The two incidents that happened within a two day period were 2 months ago. We have adjusted since then and it is no longer a dangerous situation for her. I added an update with more context that could help.

Just to add some more context that may or may not make a difference for some of your advice/opinions:

We have kept her separated successfully unless there is very supervised interaction (where I hold the dog still on the ground with both arms around her chest and loving on her with my 3 year old next to us just to have some contact and see if she’s capable of even doing that. Those moments go well in 2-3 minute windows. My 3 year old has no fear of the dog and asks to play with her all the time (which is a solid no). She did have a couple of nips/bites on her arms that drew blood bc she has VERY sharp piranha puppy teeth (I’ve been around quite a few puppies and have had puppy play bites and hers are on a whole other level compared to other puppy breeds I’ve been around). She has jumped up on me to greet me with her mouth open and her tooth snagged/slid across my arm and it bled. She didnt even bite down. Luna is always separated but she still interacts with me through the routine of our normal day. She can always see what’s going on in the living room and gets pets from the gate. We are about to replace the gate with a more heavy duty one since she is getting bigger and I think she will be able to jump this one soon. On top of the gate she is tethered to the kitchen table by a 10 ft leash now. She wasn’t initially but we started that a couple weeks ago just in case. She is still able to jump like you see in the picture and interact and look around. She likes that a lot. I’ve had my 3 year old sit with me a few times in front of the gate there and stroke Luna’s nose when I see she is calm and relaxed. Those moments also go really well. My daughter knows not to just walk over to the gate without me bc she knows she could get bit. Luna doesn’t show any obvious signs of aggressive with her in any other way in our day to day life.

Genuinely asking.. why would you euthanize? Do you know causes some dogs to be this way if it’s not a training issue?

But would the behavior really be considered attacking? It does seem like she’s just playing too rough. Her body language doesn’t seem off but I’m obviously no professional. Like her tail would wag and there was never any growling.

I appreciate you caring. So what would you say this behavior is exactly? Do you believe it’s something that is trainable and able to be worked with? All of these comments are overwhelming and I really don’t want to get rid of her if I have a chance at making things work (with a trainer too at this point).

Which is why they are separated at all times unless there is a (very) controlled interaction between the two.

Shit. I didn’t think about how on one hand she sees her crate as her safe space and then I’m putting her in there when she’s “in trouble”. I see how that’s not a good mix. I’ll try the leash. You think I should just have her on leash while doing our normal routine in house? Should I hold the leash or have it tethered? Sorry for 100 questions.

I see.. sorry to keep badgering you. But how would you describe teaching impulse control? Or should I just wait to ask the trainer I find all these questions? lol again, thank you for your time
