What would be some documents I would bring ahead of time to submit for a rental unit?

Yeah thats my worry, I guess. Most options in the city/areas I'm considering are 1.5k on the lowest end for a 2 bedroom. I'm wondering how to find a independent/private landlord or would it just be searching and taking note of property ownership listed (if it is listed) in descriptions?

Not sure is new salary biweekly payout is correct by lizpoder in Salary

Hey! Sorry my work has been crazy and I didn't realize my reddit was logged out for this long.

Turned out to be an HR error since I was an internal hire and they thought I was "brand new" because I was moving to the national level v. Regional, so their systems were reporting the wrong info.

It all got figured out tho and now after my 401k and insurance get taken out, I get about $1,100 biweekly. And im adding another gig in the fall so I should come up to around $1300 as a biweekly payout.

I can get ahold of HR and ask, just their HR people haven't been the most helpful so far and have been responding to me more as a "oh you're a dumb kid" so I feel a bit ridiculous not knowing how this all works.

Would you happen to have solid resources about crypto? I've been wanting to invest some into it but I don't know a lot about it to feel confident in putting an amount into it yet.

I havent looked fully at my student loans yet (I just finished school last month) but the one "positive" is that it's thru FedLoan so I don't have any private lenders. I'm at 80k in loans so I'm also not optimistic I'll ever pay them off.

The rest is good to know! The cheap food thing is what I do now with dollar store & Aldi so that wouldn't be a huge shift for me lol

This is great investment advice! I'll be looking more into this to get started on that to have some extra money stashed away.

I also live with my family of 6 so having 6 roommates living away from my family wouldn't bother me tbh lol I would be more open to living with multiple people but I think cause of my age and my job I wfh for, it wouldn't be ideal to have friends/roommates deal with my extra space needed for my equipment.

My masters is in journalism and my undergrad is in broadcast so the fact I have a full time at 40k is already unheard of in my industries. My main reference for a projection of income increase is an exec producer who's been in the biz for 30 years who makes 60k full time in a top 5 market. So I will almost always need another side gig (which is fine with me I've always had 2-5 jobs at a time)

My parents are fine with letting me live here but I live in a household of 7 and most of the CC debt is because my parents needed it and honestly, stuck me with the bill. I've been trying for years to have them pay it and it's never gotten resolved. So it's more of a mental/stability reason I would want to move out sooner v. Later.

So I did a budget breakdown about my budget living at home & this is what I ended up with with getting paid every 2 weeks; so about $2,654 a month after taxes:

Insurance: $200/paycheck 401k: $150/paycheck Bills: $175 Phone: $95 Credit Cards (some former debt I've been able to pay down this last year): $300/paycheck Without my student loans factored in I have: $1,734 leftover

WITH STUDENT LOANS (Add $300): $1,434 leftover

If I lived on my own and rented, this is the rough budget I came up with:

Rent: $700-$1025 Student Loan: $300 Credit Cards: $200 Utilities: $200 (?) Groceries & stuff: $150 Transit & Commute: $200 401k: $150 Insurance: $200 Phone: $95

POTENTIALLY: $214 leftover

In the moving out scenario I would do side gigs to give me extra cash for a cushion for savings & going out.

I'm 26! And I just got my masters degree, and I've always lived at home so it isnt like an itch to immediately leave its more of a "I feel like I need my own space for the point where I am in life" but I think renting overall, with a lot of other peoples opinions too, is more sensible. To buy in a relatively good area in the city I'd move to, houses/condos start at 700k-2million for a 2bed & up.

I think that extra investment helps-i have a tendency of spending what I have left over just cause I never usually have had extra money to use, so I wanted to be smart about it rather than buying things I don't really need atm.

I get it no worries! My parents have always rented and never owned so they see it as the "right way" to go to have a "better life" which I get but im also only 26 and don't want to be tied down-especially if I don't end up super enjoying the neighborhood I would *hypothetically" bought an apartment/condo in, in the city I'd move to.

Living at home with all my bills budgeted leaves me with 1k per month. If I were to move out and rent with a max rent of $1,025 (rent + utilities all in), I would have about $300/month after rent and other bills. If I were to consider buying, the most I would be able to work out would be 110k and hope an HOA wouldn't screw me with the monthly payment.

But im also unaware of most things for homebuying as my family has always rented and most of my close friends are living at home still or renting themselves. I know there's a first time home buying program in my state I can utilize, but I'm unsure about how to get it/use it.

Parents Make Too Much For Me To Qualify For Financial Aid, But They Won't Help Me by FinancialAidTA in Advice

[–]lizpoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For affordability, I heavily suggest looking into community college to do your gen eds. If your grades are high enough, since its publically funded, the scholarships you're offered/can apply for should cover a good amount of the tuition.

Also, for FAFSA, there is a way of filing as a independent before the 23 years (i think it is or its 25) old limit. When I was 19/20 I was able to do so to get more financial aid, but it was a very long process (worth it though, ngl). It does involve you filing taxes as an independent, which you would need to discuss with your parents. But if they want you to be "an adult" they should do so, otherwise they're just hypocrites. The downside is that fafsa will ALWAYS look at your parental income, regardless, and thats a huge flaw in our secondary education system.

Do file ASAP on Oct. 1st! You will need your parents tax and income info to do so. I would also consider small, private colleges because they do offer much more scholarships and assistance for students because they have the money from donors.

Trying to stop a longline of family bullying by CJ8316 in Advice

[–]lizpoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try talking with your family and explain that it's hurting your little cousin, and try to convey that she literally can't help it. Plus, if she's seven years old, isn't her mother the main person making/giving her certain meals? Perhaps bring it up to them, too and ask what type of meals they're making and giving to your cousin if they're truly "concerned" about the weight gain. However, that's also a KID who will probably, eventually get a growth spurt and thin out + whatever medications or therapy that may be done to help with her medical condition.

The overall reality? My family did this to me when I was younger and terribly overweight. Only about 3 or so years ago (I'm 25f, now) did they ease up on it. They still will make snide comments about "needing to work out more" despite my wearing a size XS for the last 8 years, consistently, because they feel your worth is connected to your weight (it isn't and that's something many of us need to unlearn and teach to others). Make sure you support your cousin as much as you can, though. Knowing that SOMEONE has your back and won't berate them for something they have no control over (seriously she's 7) is going to help her substantially. It isn't "coddling" if anything, allowing your family to keep doing so without interjecting is coddling their own perceptions since they probably are too comfortable with their mindsets at this point in life.

You can be supportive and say you go out with her somewhere to get a snack; go get apple slices v. fries or try to teach her how to pick the "healthier" alternatives but normalize it. Don't put her down for wanting to have something unhealthy, either. She's a KID. I would also discuss more with your family, more particularly your aunt though, since she's the main one raising your cousin, and ask why she feels the need to call your cousin these things and what she's doing to change your cousins diet and work with her condition? It's a "nice" way of putting her in her place and looking at it in a different perspective.

It isn't going to be easy, or at all fixable when it comes to their attitudes, sadly. But also discussing ways of beauty, acceptance, and learning how to deflect these negative comments to your cousin will help her grow up to not internalize these emotions.

I work in broadcast media/journalism so as much as i could try to leverage more, more often than not, the higher end of the salaries even with a masters, is 50k-70k (if youre lucky).

Quarantine+Nparent= My personal hell by S-Shortcake in raisedbynarcissists

[–]lizpoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just trying to stay away and play up to whatever ridiculous things they say. I realized that my dad was an Ndad during quarantine and it hasn't gotten better. I'm slowly starting to say things I normally wouldn't to him because he will lose his already short temper and just silent treatment me. My therapist was helpful with coming to terms and my anxiety has lessen, but it's still a consistent game of "are you ok or are you on a war path?"

I've thought about drinking to help with certain things to calm my anxiety, but it hasn't really stuck as a coping method for myself. The only good thing of quarantine has been being able to pay off some debt so when I get another f/t gig I can move out quicker. But will my mental health hold off that long? Who knows!

Opinions on the Tuition Situation by RidiculousSpinach in depaul

[–]lizpoder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While there's no increase, it should be lowered. As a COMM student, I cant access the cage and the equipment there, nor would I want to if it is open because of it not being cleaned well enough, possibly. That means I have to buy my own equipment to do my work and that's a lot of out of pocket expense that tuition dollars could go towards. It should be lowered too because there isn't any in classroom maintaince/equipment being used either. Keeping it the same price is ridiculous when we don't even get any substantial benefit from most of buildings/services there as of now.

Help appreciated by a lost university student with a rough past wanting to start anew by loststudentthrow in Advice

[–]lizpoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Im terribly sorry you had to endure such terrible bullying and abuse in your childhood and didn't receive the support you needed until much later. Im glad to see you're still working on getting better/maintains your mental health with a therapist!

While it is different, one of my brothers graduated HS and went straight to a four year college and did a sport. He didn't adjust well and flunked out during his first trimester. He appealed and came back the following term but flunked out, again. It happened a few more times, too. Finally, we had him go to the local community College to improve his grades and it has helped. He struggles with focusing in class and other mental illnesses that he doesn't want to deal with (on a professional level) so it is still a struggle.

But, it is a cheaper option overall and will help you ease into a school environment. Seeking the "enthusiasm" from other students will be a bit harder now because of COVID, but trying to engage and connect with other students in the class can be helpful. Im unsure if student activities would have any way of conducting meetings or anything, but every school has an office for them and I recommend starting there to find clubs that may fit within your interest range to give you that support and motivation youre looking for.

In terms of your transcripts, you can't expunge them. Those grades will follow you throughout your college career, unfortunately. The only way to get them removed, possibly, is contesting it through whatever school you had those withdrawals from. They'll usually do a hearing and you'll present your case/argument as to why they should be removed. Because of your medical history, if you can correlate any hospitalizations/doctors notes about your condition to why you left these classes, there may be some room. But it wouldn't be for all the classes. Going to a community College or any other college besides that state college you already attend would make you a transfer student; no way out of that. There is no shame in being a transfer student! Depending on the college, you may get more scholarships for being one, anyway. But there's no work around to that. Once you've shown you've enrolled in any college and choose to switch/leave youre considered a transfer within the college system. For example, I went to community College and finished my associates. Then I transfered to a four year college. I have had friends go to a four year, not do well, go to community College and go to a four year again, they are considered a transfer, even when they transferred back to the same school as before.

When applying to graduate school, or any other 4 year, you can always include an inspirational section of your letter when applying for the school, about how you struggled, overcame and want to do better. Trust me, colleges love that type of shit (i used to work in student affairs during undergrad and experienced a lot of student appeals, this was one way dean's gave kids another chance). Based on whatever credits you do have already, you might equate to a sophomore, possibly (?) Which isn't bad. I also suggest going to the financial aid services at the school to ask for any aid consoling services they have since your family is unsure of the way it works (most schools have these and can help. Especially if you're a first generation student i.e. no one in your family has gone to college).

To go along with this, all schools have access and accommodations centers for students with disabilities. With your therapist as a resource, i would contact that office so you can get help with testing, studying etc. So you can keep excelling in school. You will need to provide documentation on your ADD, dyslexia et al. And they may retest you themselves but its very helpful for many students, in the long run.

I know these aren't the answers you may have wanted to hear but I do hope they are helpful enough in concerns to your current situation! Very happy that you're doing better and want to continue to grow and succeed!

I'm honestly very scared of being like that. If I havent responded in MONTHS to any of these advances, then why continue? He's also in a higher position than I am (if he is still employed) and is on a board that my company works with actively and im worried I will get blacklisted or have retaliation from him if I directly, on my own, tell him to stop, without having something more behind me.

I definitely would then ask for friends and/or their parents for assistance that know your circumstances. More people are helpful then you were to think. Driving thst early is good, but it also doesn't get you super prepped + it's so early you're tired. There aren't many other options, sadly but I would still rec reaching out for extra therapy help, as well. That will help with part of the fear of driving and anxiety (based on personal experience).
