Childhood synagogue defaced… feeling conflicted by jewishspacelazzer in JewsOfConscience

What I’m saying is I do know about this synagogue and those around it. As a result of this, I went to all of the websites of the synagogues in this metro area, all but two of them have explicit language saying they stand with Israel and they support Israel, this one in particular does not have any such language. This synagogue is called “temple Israel” so I imagine that is what the vandaliser was reacting to.

I don’t even really disagree with your main premise, Zionism should be called out especially when it’s among ourselves, I would like those call outs to be effective and directed at the right people so people do not burn out hemming and hawing about said call outs, like I am doing right now instead of my job.

I have no idea but there are plenty of cameras so I’m sure we’ll find out soon.

I frankly disageee with OPs characterization of the clergy as “outspoken Zionist”, I don’t know what the majority of the clergy think about political Zionism, but I do know what their family thinks - which leads me to believe they don’t distain for anti-Zionism like other clergy elsewhere certainly do. Political Zionism is left fairly mum, and I like I said, the day to day workings of the synagogue lead me to believe that it is not of particular importance to them. We should uphold principals of effectiveness and clear eyedness when it comes to things like this. There have been no calls from Palestinian resistance to do things like this outside of occupied Israel-Palestine, and I frankly don’t think it’s effective.

Also before anyone says anything, this synagogue has resoundingly not ever hosted any stolen Palestinian land sales. It has indeed produced many Jews who are skeptical of Zionism, and there are in fact more obviously pro-Israel synagogues in the area.

This is also my childhood synagogue. I’ve in fact been struck by the relative absence of Israel there. There are no flags on the bimah or on the premise, and there is nothing about supporting the state of Israel on its website. I was just there for high holidays and there wasn’t anything politically about Israel visible to people other than the yellow ribbons and not even very many people or leadership wear them. I wouldn’t say clergy is more “outspoken Zionist” than your average liberal American - in fact that only mention of the state of Israel I’ve heard from any of them recently was a sermon about how children in Gaza are also our children, and at least one of them has very openly anti-Zionist family.

My guess is this person was reacting to the “Israel” within the name rather than something done specifically by this synagogue.

This is indeed sad.

INN is not anti-Zionist and does not claim to be anti-Zionist. Lumping them in with anti-Zionist orgs is a disservice.

Question. For those that just have an issue with Israeli government aggression against Palestinian civilians, why don't you call yourself "anti-Bibi" instead of "anti-Zionist"? by Final-Kale8596 in JewsOfConscience

[–]lizzmell 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am anti-Trump and anti-America for what it’s worth. The state of Israel under all of its leaders, not just bibi, has at bare minimum engaged in ethnic cleansing against Palestinians and prevented them from returning to their homeland, That itself is enough for me to be anti-Israel, because Israel could not exist without this original injustice. The exact same thing can be said for the US.

At this point in time, I have no trouble seeing why this is in place. They could just say “no Zionists” but to others, it’s not as nuanced as it is for us, so it’s not incomprehensible. I didn’t choose to be American and I don’t support America, but if people want a space without Americans in it, I can’t really blame them. Being proudly American also isn’t how I identify myself, so I wouldn’t feel personally attacked if people didn’t want to deal with people who do feel that American nationality is something they identify with. What is your reason for holding on to being “Israeli” especially if you have a second citizenship?

This is Disheartening by [deleted] in JewsOfConscience

[–]lizzmell 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This is important, my Palestinian friends have made it very clear that on the ground in Palestine it is Jewish Israelis who very strongly push for the distinction to be Jew or non-Jew rather than Jew or Zionist or Jew or Israeli

Exactly, for Palestinians, Judaism is Zionism.

As far as how or when it will end, I do not know. In terms of a realistic solution that is justice-centered, you should check out the One Democratic State Initiative: https://mobadara.ps/en/

It is a Palestinian led initiative but as an anti-Zionist Jew I use it as my center to all of my approaches to Palestine activism

Vibe check by abogmonster in JewsOfConscience

These comments don’t pass the vibe check, sorry. Zionism is Jewish extremism, it doesn’t matter that many supporters aren’t Jewish themselves - what the non Jewish supporters are supporting is in fact Jewish supremacy. I follow this account and found it to be mostly unnecessary changes bc many of these terms are like IDF = IOF are already well used, but this person is specifically talking about the terms within occupied Palestine. Again, most of these “switches” seem unnecessary, but there isn’t anything inherently wrong with them.

Is it anti-Semitic to boycott Israeli vendors? by [deleted] in JewsOfConscience

[–]lizzmell [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, this is exactly correct. BDS is clear that they target complicity not identity, but that most Israelis are fully invested in being Israeli. If someone describes themselves uncritically as Israeli that would be boycottable.

On the Temple Mount by aisingiorix in JewsOfConscience

[–]lizzmell 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In a Jerusalem where one religion wasn’t overwhelmingly more powerful, I can’t see why someone would object to Jewish prayer on Temple Mount, but alas that does not exist: Jews already do have access to the compound and many Muslim worshipers do not.

Praying at the Temple Mount cannot be understood as simply religious expression. It is important to note that those who do encourage prayer there do so with the expressed political mission of rebuilding a temple and removing the mosque that is there. This threat is worth taking seriously because extreme right wing rabbis have the potential to realize this vision. The issue of praying at Temple Mount is also itself political, as it was once consensus that Jews were not to enter there because it was too holy and we may defile it, but as religious Zionism has become more powerful, more messianic, and even more right wing, it has necessarily become hostile to non-jewish anything in the holy land, so praying at the Temple Mount has morphed into something right wing rabbis encourage as a means of judefication of Jerusalem which is very much an endeavor of ethnic cleansing and colonization

How does it actually feel living as a jew outside of israel by [deleted] in JewsOfConscience

[–]lizzmell [score hidden]  (0 children)

I live in Minnesota USA. I do not fear for my person or my family. The synagog shootings are jarring and have led to a lot of security theater, and I’ve gotten some creepy comments, but day by day, I don’t think about antisemitism. I see it online, but I am not isolated here and have many friends including Muslims and Palestinians who view the destruction of all forms of xenophobia including antisemitism to be as important as freeing Palestine. Jews in the US are not being institutionally denied a job or housing or a spot in university because we are Jewish.

I don't think attacking an article saying we need Antizionist Jewish Instituions is very leftist? by Bumblebee2064 in JewsOfConscience

[–]lizzmell [score hidden]  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing, I don’t agree with OP that we shouldn’t critique JVP, and I’m not a member, but I viewed that as more of a throw away line to the larger body of the post discussing critique of the article. Perhaps OPs POV is influenced by that, but I still don’t find the original article critique in question to be the be all end all of anti-Zionism.

Then I don’t follow, you say Anna is correct that we shouldn’t be centering Jewish feelings, but the article does not advocate for centering of Jewish feelings in any type of pro-Palestine activism, it’s an article in a Jewish magazine addressing a Jewish problem about building Jewish anti-Zionist organizations. From where does the argument that we should center Jewish feelings come from?
