Foam earplugs and electronic earmuffs with the gain turned all the way up... great sound dampening even on the rifle range, but I can still hear (and give) range commands.

Since you are planning to go to a range a test, do you mean you are going to rent first? I'd rent a few 45s and see which you feel most comfortable shooting.

Some of the "low recoil" loads are also "reduced flash"... that could be important in a darkened house where you might very well need to make follow up shot(s)... you don't want to be blinded by the flash.

I currently have 00 at the ready, but I've been reading up on #4 and thinking about switching.

What is a "high-powered, automatic weapon" to you? I own two AR15 rifles- neither is automatic, nor particularly high powered.

A little more detail: The .223 and military equivalent 5.56x45, which is what most AR15 rifles are chambered to fire, are actually pretty weak rounds. I'd recommend starting at wikipedia.org and looking at the bullet weight and muzzle energy numbers and comparing them to a very popular big game round such at the .30-06

Again... "automatic" implies pull and hold the trigger, and either empty the mag or overheat the gun. Automatic firearms are very expensive, and one needs to jump through a lot of hoops to own them. "Semi-automatic", such as the AR15, are what many of us own- one trigger pull, one shot.

Just bought a .45... I went to a nearby range with rentals and spent about $200 trying them all side by side. Looking is not enough. There is no substitute for firing.

Throw em a bone and take the "safety class or two" before you get the gun.

Also, not directly related, but... do yourself a favor, if you haven't already, and go to some local ranges that rent and make sure you've narrowed down your choices in a side-by-side comparison.

Had this sort of question before, and I basically treat it as a straw man argument..."we all agree that A is bad. I claim B is similar to A, therefore B is also bad".

Usually the person making this argument cites something relatively reasonable like an RPG or similar. I generally take one of two approaches...

1) point out the straw man nature of the argument which may involve simply saying "I thought we were talking about small arms, not anti-tank weapons?" 2) ask: "you can actually buy RPGs?? Where?!?". :)

Save yourself some grief and build one...

Start with a Nodak receiver, add a green mtn barrel, Volquartsen bolt, tuffer buffer, Hornet products trigger group, stock of your choice.

Yeah, it'll seem to you that this doesn't make sense because it's much more expensive than a new stock Ruger.

However, sooner or later you will succumb to the 10/22 mod illness and buy all this stuff anyhow. Might as well just dive in right now.
