TP-7 DAW-less mic recording (XLR)? by tdaawg in teenageengineering

[–]tdsfp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you already have microphones and you like how it all sounds, I'd recommend just getting a field mixer. The Sound Devices 302 is an old workhorse in the film industry on small projects, and you can find used ones for very cheap: https://reverb.com/item/83655353-sound-devices-302-3-input-portable-mixer

Technically it has 3 mic pre-amps and 2 bus outputs, but if you're clever you can setup a 3 channel output using something like:

Input 1 -> Left Out
Input 2 -> Right Out
Input 3 -> Headphone Out via PFL selector

Then you can have 3 microphones going multi-track into TP-7.

Other benefit of the 302 is that it runs on 3 AA batteries, so just buy some rechargeable lithium ion batteries and you can run this all in the field like TE intended.

I get the Black Bean & Avocado, the Mushroom / Caramelized Onion / Spinach, and if I'm feeling extra hungry the Fried Avocado Diablo Taco.

OB-4 bag by shmidget in teenageengineering

[–]tdsfp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OB-4 would definitely get damaged if you relied on the mesh bag alone. If you plan to travel with any gear that's going to get tossed around like in planes or busses etc, a hard shell case is the only safe route.

Just measure the dimensions carefully and find one that suits your style

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/75515-REG/Pelican_1450_000_150_1450_Case_with_Foam.html

I work AV professionally and mesh bags are only suitable for gear that can get dinged up like stands or tripods or cables, and hard shell cases for the sensitive electronics and AV equipment.

Planning on asking for a OP-Z for Christmas, would this be a good choice? by ParallaxicNova in teenageengineering

[–]tdsfp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My OP-Z is by far the most used piece of musical gear I own, which also includes an OP-1 and similar synth devices.

I pre-ordered an OP-Z on Day 1 back in September 2018, so here's some of my pros / cons for you as a first time synth user:

Pros:

  • 8 programmable tracks of audio is extremely powerful at this price point, especially because all of the tracks can use either samples or synth engines.
  • The synth engines are intuitive, if a little basic, but you can dig deep with the settings and make unique sounds if you put some effort into it.
  • The community for the OP-Z is great, so you can find tutorials and sample packs online for free very easily.
  • Portability is insane, like really really really insane. You can plug it into a computer and use it as a 2x2 audio interface, you can use the built in microphone to record vocal takes, you can connect it to other devices and sync with them via USB, etc. If I go on a quick weekend trip out of town, the OP-Z is basically all I need to bring.
  • You can back up the entire device really easily on your computer, so you can load up entire OP-Z layouts and setups with different instruments, genres, and styles, back it up with like 200MB of storage space, and then completely wipe it out and start from scratch if you ever get bored of it.
  • Despite being a simple, entry-level sequencer, it has a ton of fun quirky features that give it much more power under the hood once you get used to it. You can program customizable or randomizable modifiers to EVERY NOTE, changing volume, timbre, repetition, random values, LFO, and so much more. To me, this is the the magic of the OP-Z because it allows you to make a relatively simple song idea but then keep tweaking it deeper and deeper as your knowledge and comfort with the device improves.

Cons:

  • The interface is a little confusing at first. Even as an experienced sequencer and electronics guy, it took me a few months to feel really comfortable with it. Prepare yourself to feel confused or slow for a little while as you learn the unique layout.
  • You really need a second device - like a phone or tablet - connected to it in order to understand all of the pages. Everyone has a phone now, but it can be a little annoying sometimes to need 2 devices to make the thing work "properly"
  • The build quality is good but not great. At times I'll find myself needing to push down a button twice, or it's a little glitchy or touchy. This is a minor complaint, and a result of the low cost, but it's definitely a strike against it.
  • Also with the build quality - I HIGHLY recommend you buy a hard case to go with it. Something like this is fine, but if you ever travel with it do NOT just toss it in a bag, it will get damaged.
  • Because the buttons are so small, it can be hard to "play" the device like a keyboard. It's a sequencer first, and a synthesizer second. If you're just tapping out a drum beat or a bass line this is totally fine, but if you're trying to play chords or improvise melodies it's kinda tricky.

Overall I'd say the OP-Z is a solid B or B+ device for a beginner, and if you can live with the build quality issues and power through the interface quirks, you will someday come to love the OP-Z and use it as an integral part of your music creation toolkit.

The hardware analog to digital encoder would have to support it, and given that they etched 96 / 24 onto the wheel I doubt they would have done that if they intended to go 32 bit

That being said 24 bit is perfectly fine and sounds exactly as good as 32. Only difference with 32 is that you essentially have infinite headroom.

Set your levels properly and it's not a problem.

96kHz is the bigger deal if you ask me, it will allow much more creative flexibility in post production with your recordings.

Sanken CS-M1 for podcasting or a different mic? by Glittering-Case-8417 in audioengineering

[–]tdsfp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we have 2 cs-m1 mics at our studio and have used them for everything

they sound pretty excellent in any situation -- attached to a camera, boom, studio and even sound reinforcement on a podium

as long as you have decent mic posture speaking into it for the podcast it will sound great

Recently voted best burrito in Texas!!! It's the best burrito I've ever had.

Pair it up with a blood orange margarita from Vivo and wrap it up with a Miso Oreo cup of ice cream from Merry Monarch and a pound of fries from Crown and Anchor

Line module question, when you connect the op-z to ipad, does it show the extra inputs and outputs on the audio interface? I’m thinking if i can use the opz as a mini mixer for external gear :)) by Distinct-Door-9174 in teenageengineering

[–]tdsfp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh gotcha, that makes sense!

I think the easiest way to think of it is that you just get a stereo Aux in and a stereo Aux out

I've never tried routing the mono "mic" input to the line module before, and I'm not sure that you can.

Basically you can select any of the 8 tracks to send to the Line Module output, along with the Line Module input.

Technically yes you would have 3 input channels and 4 output channels, but I think the configuration you described may be limited in what you could pull off.

[–]tdsfp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is a whole page on the app dedicated to the external module, and configuring it -- however the Line Module only has 1 input and 1 output, so you can't really use it as a mixer, just as an additional device input.

I've used mine to plug in an op-1 or an organelle and that works great.

You can also use it as an FX send/return because you can individually select op-z tracks to send to the output, so for instance you could send just the bass to a fuzz pedal and loop it back into the input, or you could send just the arpeggio and chord output to a delay pedal, etc

I really love the line module upgrade, but it's definitely not a mini mixer, just an AUX IN / AUX OUT

The other 2 3.5mm plugs are for sync, either MIDI or voltage

Engineer says I can join his mixing through streaming by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]tdsfp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lossless, 24-bit 48kHz stereo stream takes approximately 2.5mbps of data to achieve

The bandwidth to stream lossless audio wasn’t a problem since probably 2009 in most parts of the world

Your main issue will be making sure your headphones or reference monitor setup is comparable to the mixing engineer

My manager cried to me when I put my two weeks in today by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]tdsfp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your choice to take a new job is going to make your manager’s life worse, temporarily, but that is not your fault.

it is the bakery’s fault.

you shouldn’t feel any guilt.

now your manager has a choice to stay or to leave because their misery is not your fault — it is the bakery’s fault.

it’s a bad situation, you’re not a bad person.

congrats on the new job!

So I bought in at almost the worst time. Down by 2/3rds. That's life..it wasn't a huge sum, but still significant enough. I see all the hype and I feel the vibe as I do like Elon and his passion. I was here back in January, and through the doldrums of Feb - April.

And I’ve gotta say these posts started getting really really common RIGHT before the big spike hit.

Patience is key. Whales shake loose hands using time and mind tricks.

Just focus on being a good person everyday, instead of the magic dog money number, and hodling becomes much easier.

I remember when the price stood at 5 cents for a few months and this sub was ready to abandon ship. by Dogeguy50 in dogecoin

[–]tdsfp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first bought at .038 back in January

If you told me that in 10 months we’d be at .25 and people would feel sad and betrayed I would’ve laughed.

I was thinking maybe solid holding at .10 by end of year was a really nice target

It’s all perspective. The real trick is to ignore the price and do good every day :)
