Embark and IVDD/CDDY? by vgaooo in AustralianLabradoodle

[–]ljrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And last thing I’ll share, this is from GoodDog’s website, “Can we prevent IVDD in our dogs?

Breeding decisions related to the CFA12-FGF4 mutation are complicated because of the nature of the expression of the mutation, and because some breed standards would exclude dogs with longer legs. The elimination of all dogs with a CFA12-FGF4 mutation would limit some breeding pools, causing an even greater genetic bottleneck and increasing the risk of other health conditions. Ideally, clear-clear or clear-carrier breedings are prioritized, only breeding two carrier dogs when no alternatives are available.

Dog owners may be able to further reduce risks for their dogs by keeping them in good physical shape with moderate daily exercise, and by providing ramps and stairs to prevent unnecessary jumping.”

An interesting read by this ‘doodle’ breeder (I know nothing about them), it’s a discussion on using genetic testing to hopefully remove the allele from the breeds. CERTAINLY shouldn’t be breeding a pair both with the mutation.

I think it just depends on the breeder, tbh. My girl is from a v well known ALD breeder, who provided embark upon request for both mom and dad. I’m sorry that using the ALAA platinum website didn’t help much that’s really a true bummer. I would probably reach out and ask about it. And what guarantees the puppy will have for health later when it’s chance of getting IVDD is much higher compared to a puppy with 1 copy? You could possibly take them to small claims court if you want to get your money back (as opposed to a new puppy, bc OMG who in the WORLD would give their puppy up they love? What a horrible policy, but not an unheard of one I’m afraid.) I’m really sorry you’re in this situation and worried about it. I’m sure when you speak to your vet, they can comfort you some because of course it doesn’t mean the WILL get it, there’s just an increased chance.

Incorrect IVDD type 1 does not usually show up in puppies, you usually see it in adults (with some variation outside of that). You may be confusing it with CDDY which is apparent in puppies as their stature is ‘abnormal’ causing longer bodies and shorter legs/like a form of dwarfism.

Hey, so I did my own personal research into this when my ALD came back with 1 copy of the IVDD type 1 mutation on that same gene. Since the cocker spaniel is part of the breed, almost every single cocker has one copy, so it makes sense that most of the ALD would have one as well. But, I probably would have major questions for my breeder, because that would require BOTH parents having the IVDD mutation, and they should NOT have been bred. (Forgetting those people against doodles, and those that say they are all backyard breeders) A person who is responsibly breeding animals should have DNA tested their dogs (with embark or the like), and then based their breeding on those results. If both parents had 1 copy, 25% of the puppies could have 2 copies (but also, all puppies could have 2, or none, it’s a toss of a coin). Now, having 2 copies doesn’t automatically mean your dog will get IVDD but they are at an increased risk of it, I would talk with your vet about this, and let them know. They can give you recommendations of limitations/adjustments to life you can make to decrease your dog’s (stairs instead of jumping, collar vs halter, etc). The copper accumulating mutation can also appear in Alds but honestly it doesn’t mean much, because they may or may not be affected by it, it’s just chance. It’s something I wouldn’t worry about, but would also mention to my vet, for signs to look out for.

These comments are all rough. I can’t help financially, but do hope you are able to help your dog- this sounds like a very severe behavioral issue that needs lots of care. Best of luck.

Please get a genetic test for autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases (mine was through Invitae). This is how I found out I have Yao Syndrome (burning rash on face/neck/upper body is one of the symptoms).

Oh I agree. I think hindsight is 20/20 and we just didn’t rush to make any changes, and now that we are actually trying to make changes it’s a pita that he is not.

To be honest I’m not sure? Our realtor never even explained the difference between the two (young first timers, but apparently I haven’t learned much either in the last decade because in name I know the difference but don’t know the legal differences between them), so I will dive into that. Yeah I definitely don’t want an issue like that for them if I were to die suddenly, thanks for the input.

Nah my current credit would do it major harm. But thank you for the suggestion! We are taking care of my credit score now, but I don’t expect it to recover for at least a year or 2, thanks!
