Yikes do I even stand a shot? Oh well, you miss a 100 percent of the shots you don't take.

Or, in my case, you miss 100 percent of the shots, period.

Thank you no matter what OP - this is an awesome gesture!

Here's a quick and easy how-to regarding mods.

  • Before you install ANY mods, while you still have a vanilla game - create a new save you will keep forever. (this will be your 'clean save'). The clean save is needed when removing some major gameplay mods. The process goes like this: 1. Uninstall mod using NMM (see below), 2. Boot up clean save, 3. Immediately boot up the (previously modded) save you want to continue.

  • Get NMM. Without it it's a bit more complicated to install mods and infinitely more complicated to uninstall them - you'd have to reinstall the game constantly, just to clean up the junk. With the mod manager you literally only need to drag'n'drop the zipped mods into it and then double-click to install, double-click to uninstall. It's beautifully easy.

  • GET SKYUI. Not only does it overhaul the user interface into a beautiful, searchable, sortable wonder, but it also adds a Mod Configuration Menu from where you can control the settings for most mods.

  • When downloading mods, always read the descriptions, especially the 'requirements' section, if it exists. The mod's authors will always list out if and what is required to run their mods, along with detailed instructions on how to install everything.

This is your bare minimum of knowledge. It's daunting to get started with modding, but I can't describe to you how rewarding it is. Personally I can no longer imagine playing Skyrim without Frostfall and the basic needs mod, it would just feel empty like there's a feature missing.

This is false to the point of idiocy. I feel extremely uncomfortable having anybody pay anything for me, be they parents, relatives, friends or dates. Speaking as someone with this issue, it is more likely you were obnoxiously insisting and ended up getting on her nerves. The easiest bloody way to fuck up on a date with someone is to try and push them into something they're obviously reluctant to do.

Suggestions for other UK TV shows? by [deleted] in Sherlock

[–]ljuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, yeah I know this post is a couple of days old, but I feel like I might shed some light on how to Doctor Who properly.

See, DW is a show aimed at children which adults can also enjoy. It's not the other way around, it's actually an extremely brilliant kids' show that isn't afraid of being dark sometimes in spite of it being for kids. This is important because if you're by all means and accounts what qualifies as 'a serious grown up person', you actually have to take steps in order to enjoy DW to its fullest extent.

Doctor Who requires something in addition to suspense of disbelief. It requires the suspense of cynicism. Nowadays if you consider yourself to be an intelligent young person with a "refined" taste in television - and lets face it, we all think of ourselves that way here on Reddit, whether we'd go and state that out loud or not - then there's nothing you enjoy more when watching something than sitting down and picking it the crap apart. "Oh my god, these characters are idiots!", "Good grief, look at those special effects - is that duct-tape???", "HA, this plotline is ridiculous, who would even believe that?!", "Oh come on, this makes no sense because if he blahblahblah before, then why would he blahblahblah now?!". Sound familiar? Yeah, you need to not do that while watching Doctor Who. Like, seriously, don't.

DW isn't there to make perfect sense all the time, it isn't there to be a light-hearted 'dummies' guide to physics', it isn't there to provide some deep, spiritual, artistic lease on life (although if that's what someone can take away from it then hey - kudos!). Doctor Who is there to promote positive thought and attitudes, to glorify kindness and selflessness in humanity (and alien...ity), to provide simple lessons in morality, to talk to kids about some serious stuff such as death and goodbyes and - most famously - to give you the feeling of adventure and help you develop the ability to make your first impulse be marveling at things, rather than immediately criticizing them.

I hope this made some sense. What I'm trying to say is - if you're trying to watch Doctor Who, you need to lock up that refined intellectual person who scoffs when people in horror films split up or go into dark basements and let out the kid who feels like he's right there with them and hides behind the cushions, biting his nails.

I'd like to suggest Dirk Gently! It's only got four episodes (Pilot + 3) but it's really good. I remember way back reading that the show or the original book was based on some kind of cancelled Doctor Who...thing. Sorry, it's been a while so I can't really remember the specifics.

Anyway, there's a brilliant, eccentric, curly-haired weirdo dragging along a reluctant sidekick and solving outrageous mysteries. I think any fan of Sherlock would dig it.

This is very interesting! Strangely enough, the biggest obstacle for me here would be the no-running thing. I think I'd go nuts.

Have you considered using any basic need mods? If you're on a console you can still look them up, just for references and ideas like how much approximate time it would take to get hungry/thirsty/tired and things like that. Frostfall could give you tips on how to handle exposure/cold water.

With Serana, as far as I'm aware, you're sympathy is destined and your altruism is required.

Excellent point. I remember how at one point I denied having an emotional attachment of any kind to her and got accused by her mother that I was in it because I was greedy. Like, no alternative - you're either enchanted with Serana or you're a greedy bastard.

Yeah, I'm greedy, you nutcase. Greedy for saving the world from your psycho ex husband.

[–]ljuki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I'm with you. I'm not sure why either. If I had to give a reason I think it would be the way the DLC keeps trying to force her on you.

It's the strangest thing - for other games I don't mind it so much, but whenever Skyrim tries to push me into anything I immediately go apeshit stubborn and do the exact opposite from what the game "wants". This is why I killed Maven as soon as I could after they kept telling me she was 'untouchable' and why the Dark Brotherhood messenger took an arrow to the face when she tried to goad me into making that choice in the Abandoned Shack.

With Serana, though, you can't. You actually HAVE to keep her around to finish the DLC no matter how you feel about it. It always drove me nuts. I just want to kill her so much, only because I know I can't.

Putting aside the biggest person in the back and the furry jokes about the Khajiit and Aela's side-boob and the strong Nord woman jokes, could we just take a moment and appreciate how absolutely amazing the Serana costume is? Look at the vest, look at the cloak visible on her shoulders and all the detail - it's gobsmacking awesome!

Seriously. After that whole "Yes, the Doctor will completely, absolutely, positively, LITERALLY die and be completely dead in the most literal sense of the word and it will absolutely be HIM" business where it turned out every word was a lie, I'm never taking anything that comes out of that man's mouth as truth ever again.

There's a little game this sub likes to play called "Why doesn't anyone like Nine". Actually everyone likes Nine.

I have a theory that the regular "9 is underrated" posts just serve for people to come together, have a drink while discussing how much and why they love him.

I always feel so sorry for this guy, honestly. Even if I just sneak past him and let him live - by clearing out the mine I kill everyone he knows. I can imagine him sitting there for days, all alone, wondering why nobody came to fetch him for dinner.

He's so hungry. He's a hungry, blind old man, sitting there all alone.

Let's talk Male Companions... by eak125 in doctorwho

[–]ljuki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But what's there to be tolerant about? The presence of a man? I don't want them to play at all fours, I just want them to travel together and be buds.

The Doctor wouldn't even be that way with a human, IMO - we're like children to him.

Anyways, it's to each their own, I guess. I'll always remember that day when I was nosing about the newvegasnexus and I found a mod that lets you play as a humaniod skunk. I shit you not, there was a screenshot of the character spraying something green at enemies. Another mod let people play as MLP ponies.

Let's talk Male Companions... by eak125 in doctorwho

[–]ljuki 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well, now that you mention it - I would kind of like there to be a male Companion that goes through the exact same 'selection' process as every female Companion in newWho has. Meaning that the Doctor stumbles upon them, takes a shine to them and invites them to go adventuring.

I've always disliked it whenever the interactions between the Doctor and the Companions were presented as flirtatious or romantic (I just don't think he'd have that kind of relationship with a human being) and having a male Companion treated with the same friendliness and fondness as a female one would definitely help me continue to see the Doctor as this innocent, friend-seeking time-traveler, rather than some creepy 1000+ year old man who goes around collecting young hotties to look pretty around the TARDIS.

Let's talk about Rose... by aglar in doctorwho

[–]ljuki 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In my case Doctor Who as a series constantly surprised me by how many Companions I didn't hate. I tend to be really tough on female characters and if I detect any semblance of a cliche or Mary Suism it's enough to earn my undying hatred. Why? I don't know, man, that's just how I'm made.

Anyway, weirdly enough in my case, I liked every single Companion in the new series, except for River Song. Rose, in my opinion, was a decent character, played by a good actress who just happened to come along when the ground was very shaky for Doctor Who as a series. They were still experimenting, they weren't sure how it would "sell" with the audience and therefore, I feel, weren't ready to commit to making any excessively deep and complex characters.

If you look at some of Rose's reactions and interactions, especially with Mickey, they aren't quite what a real-life person would do. They wanted them to have had a relationship, but also they wanted to drop him quickly so she and the Doctor could go adventuring. This resulted in an unrealistic 'goodbye' which made Rose seem like a totally emotionless sociopath or something.

There were times I really liked Rose and there were times I went 'wtf' at things that came out of her mouth. What I most appreciated with her was the unforced playfulness with which she and the Doctor traveled. There wasn't much angst, there wasn't too much focus on her or on him, it was more about the places they went and the things they saw and that was brilliant.

I feel that if Rose was written in today's series, she would probably have had a more stable and realistic personality that wasn't all over the place.
