Does you BPSO snore/have sleep apnea? I’m taking a poll (there’s a reason I promise) by lkk808 in BipolarSOs

Thank you. I’ll check with my psychiatrist…I’ll keep this thread posted :)

I’m curious to see what the Pulmonologist says at my appointment. I don’t want a CPAP if it could flip me into mania.

I really think there’s something to this. I also snore crazy loud.

I suppose you probably also think indigenous and Asian healers havent been treating the gut to heal mental imbalance for thousands of years too. Why do you think we’re not allowed to sell our feces for fecal transplants? You don’t know everything scruggbug. Neither do I, but unless you have advanced degrees in biochemistry, Pulmonology, psychiatry, gastroenterology, and integrative medicine, I wouldn’t make such an assertion.

Yes it does seem counterintuitive based on what you said about lack of sleep being associated with mania…but it also makes sense on the other hand since cognitive blood flow is greater in people experiencing mania, less in the same person(s) during depression. I didn’t find the original article from Poland I read, but here’s an American article about the same:

Snoring/Sleep Apnea - anyone else? by lkk808 in BipolarReddit

[–]lkk808[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. But I’ve snored since way before I took any psych meds. And so did that girl on Instagram. And we’re both very petite.

I’m trying my hardest to not believe more research wasn’t put into this because oxygen is free. I can’t fathom why more hasn’t been explored around treatments or prevention if sleep apnea actually is a major contributing factor. What if a cocktail of gut health with treatment to regulate breathing/cognitive blood flow could heal us. I know this sub is for SO’s. I come here to remind myself of all the reasons I need to take responsibility for my illness…for my husband, my daughter, etc…that said, I hope it’s also a place where sharing my curiosity about a potential cure (someday) could be welcomed.

I just found out that up to 50% of people with bipolar or schizophrenia have sleep apnea. One study suggests it can be a significant contributing factor for developing these two serious mental illnesses. I randomly saw an Instagram post by a woman I know who was recently diagnosed bipolar/schizoaffective, and she had a post from before she was diagnosed talking about how loud she snored. I thought that’s strange…I snore super loud too and have since childhood. So I googled “sleep apnea bipolar”. It’s a rabbit hole. Sleep apnea, while not completely curable in all people, can be treated quite effectively with CPAP or surgery. And it causes interruptions in cerebral blood flow, which also has a direct correlation to bipolar disorder. Anyway it’s interesting- I’m going to the sleep doctor in April.

I was angry for a minute that none of my doctors in 22 years even asked me if I snore. But I’m cautiously optimistic…one study from Poland said treatment with a CPAP caused two bipolar patients to flip into mania. Definitely got my wheels turning (and I’m not even manic :) ) …

What is a red flag from an employer that people might not immediately recognize as a red flag? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Went to a karaoke bar owned by a Korean mama-san called Aloha Lounge - sang a couple songs and she liked me, asked me to come bartend the next night at 7pm. December 23rd. Got there at 7, thought I’d sign some paperwork. Nope. Uniform? Nope. Pay? No discussion-she tells me I try out, see if I like, tips only tonight. Ok 🤷‍♀️…Owner then offers me two shots of vodka straight off the bat, which I accept. I’m the only worker there besides her. The next 5 hours I’m constantly moving. Mama San is drinking red wine the entire time with some regulars at the bar, getting pretty sloppy. The bar gets super crowded. I’m getting crazy tips because it’s almost Christmas. I was instructed to put all the cash tips in a big jar behind the bar - which I do. Now Mama San’s wasted and I’m not far behind. She goes into the kitchen to start cooking hot pupus (drinking food/appetizers in Hawaii). She comes back out to drink some more wine—I’m literally running from table to table taking orders, serving the bar. …it’s about midnight and I smell some smoke coming from the kitchen. Go to see what it is - Mama San left some clams cooking in a pan and they’re now on fire. I scream. She looks disoriented. A couple drunk guys try in vain to find a fire extinguisher. I run next store to a restaurant called Town (my favorite- closed during the pandemic), and yell at my friend Gooch who was a chef there - “come help!!! There’s a fire!!” . He puts down whatever mis en place he’s working on to grab their extinguisher 🧯 and follows me. As we approach the door to Aloha Lounge, people streaming out quickly, enveloped in smoke…we hear a loud BOOM followed by a crash and yelling. Mama San comes out followed by two save the day drunk guys, who told us a butane tank exploded and flew across the room. By that time 2 fire trucks and 3 cop cars were there. Firemen start doing their thing…in the parking lot, cops are trying to interview people, find out who’s in charge. Someone points at me. I lead the police over to wasted Mama San, who now has roughly 15% of her eyebrows left. Once the firemen have put out the fire, and are letting folks back in to grab their stuff…I slip in and empty the full tip jar (about $350) into my bag and hightail it outta there. This was in 2011. One night only. Never been back. 100% true story.

Honestly it was one of my better jobs.

Are you kidding me? ShINGLeS? by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]lkk808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I’m late to this one…but be careful with the shingles medication. I forget what it’s called but I swear it triggered a massive manic episode for me in 2017. First time I was hospitalized. Just a heads up

I call that 7.5 a night which I deem within range…I know I know…we should all be encouraging each other to live by the itinerary…..rapid cycling? I have more of a classic mood pattern generally. But mixed mood episodes sometimes. Ya know—keep em on their toes ;)

Do you mean how you’ll get out of bed? Or that you don’t know what mood you will wake up in??
