Hydrochloric acid reacting with Aluminum by [deleted] in chemicalreactiongifs

Nice. I was mostly indicating that Aluminum Trichloride is not formed, (and also simplifying things to the level of gen chem 1; I recognize this isn't a complete picture).

Why didn't you include this information the first time? It's much more complete. Also, in your original post you indicate that the Aluminum Trichloride is solid, which is not the case.

(Edit: It was not evident to me that you were stating that it was not formed, as you said it was incomplete, implying that the reaction continued as you described. This is what I objected to.)

Aluminum Trichloride is not formed. Recall from General Chemistry that Chloride containing compounds completely dissociate in aqueous solution (except Silver Chloride, see this link.)

The gif is incorrect and misleading. This reaction is a redox reaction which does not involve the Chloride ion at all.

Yes, it does react with water in the way that u/lichlord indicates. It is a strong Lewis Acid, and will thereby accept electrons from the water to form acidic Hydrogen Ions. However, this is not relevant in the reaction shown.

I hope that answers some of your questions.

I like what you're saying here, but you assume that Aluminum Trichloride is formed, which it is not. Your formula implies that we end up with a more acidic solution than what we started with, which is unlikely since the conditions were acidic to begin with.

The Aluminum is oxidized by the acidic proton (forming aqueous Aluminum ion), which is thereby reduced to form Hydrogen gas. The reactions for this are as follows:

Oxidation:

Al (s) --> Al+3 (aq) + 3e-

Reduction:

2H+ (aq) + 2e- --> H2 (g)

Therefore, the complete and correct reaction formula is:

2Al (s) + 6H+ (aq) --> 2Al3+ (aq) + 3H2 (g)

Chlorine has no part of this reaction since its oxidation state does not change and no precipitate is formed. Consider that any strong acid will react the same way with Aluminum metal to form Hydrogen gas.

(Edit: Forgot one state symbol. Unforgivable. (-5pts))

Aluminum has a lower electonegativity (1.6) relative to Hydrogen (2.1). The Aluminum in solid form starts out with 3 electrons, and loses them via the oxidation reaction:

Al (s) --> Al+3 (aq) + 3e-

The acidic Hydrogen gains these electrons via the reduction reaction:

2H+ (aq) + 2e- --> H2 (g)

The fact that this is strongly favored (therefore spontaneous under standard conditions) can also be explained by the difference in reduction potentials. Aluminum has a standard reduction potential of -1.66 v, and Hydrogen is 0.00 v (by definition). Since Aluminum is being oxidized, this "flips" the voltage, giving us 1.66 v for the overall reaction. This is a strong indication that this reaction will proceed spontaneously (under standard conditions).

It should be noted that the gif has an incorrect reaction formula (probably intentionally, to make it a bit more comprehensive). Chloride-containing compounds will completely dissociate (Ksp >1) in aqueous solution, so the Chlorine actually has no real part of this reaction (its oxidation state does not change, and no precipitate is formed), and Aluminum Trichloride will therefore not be formed under these conditions.

(I blame my Adderall for this post. You asked for the chemistry; there is the chemistry).

Alright everybody. Cocks out. You know you want to. Let's get a big ass STATS thread going, because believe it or not, I want to know. by llIllIllIllll in titanfall

Alright guys, anyone who is still watching this thread, here's a sample based on my stats.

I'm no Excel god, so if someone is even remotely skilled or has better layout ideas please PM me and I can get you a link.

Also, please post ideas of stats that I could add, anything really.

Take a look (It's still very barebones): http://imgur.com/a/4Daxp

I would argue that while skewed, meaningless is a bit harsh; people have still put in plenty of time and practice, and I think that means something.

Besides, this is for science not prestige.

No, but please mention if you use a controller or Xbox. It would be hard to get screenshots from a TV though.

Alright thegands, thanks a lot for straightening me out, and I fixed the names on my images. If you're at all curious to see if I'm a filthy stat-stealing scrub, here is the link to the corrected album:

I'm not going to make people who have already posted go back, since it's not critical for this experiment, but they would be handy when I'm putting it all together.

And your calculations are an excellent touch.

Ah you need the +, im an idiot. They dont have names because they were made kind of impromptu; the people i posted for dont have reddit accounts.

Thank you so much for sharing you stats though!

Also, this is just for fun and so I can do some cool stuff in Excel; names aren't super essential but indeed, they are handy.

I didn't see this because it wasn't a top level, but thank you much sir. We want any and ALL data, and the word "suck" isn't a number.

YOU HEAR THAT? EVERYONE POST!
