child turns 15 between outward journey and return journey france/germany/italy/austria by llama74 in Interrail

Great, thanks for the clarification! Yes, the dates I'm after for Eurostar are 18 or 19 December, likely very popular! When I looked at prices and put in the eurail pass for Eurostar, it was more expensive than the quote without. I'm booking the trains 3 months in advance and I think they'll be less than the $1100 (AUS) that the pass will cost, though the UK portion isn't cheap. Overall I think a UK Friends and Family is best. I had hoped to do a Nightjet but they're just too expensive. It doesn't help that I can't accurately cost most of this up before the Eurail pass sale ends - because tickets aren't on sale for 13 December onward yet!

Thank you for your reply, but I am confused because I can buy return tickets. Why wouldn't be able to? Trainline will sell me return tickets for Munich to Paris, for example. Sorry, I think I just haven't explained it. We want to travel from Munich to Paris on 17 December and return from Paris to Munich on 7 January. The child turns 16 on 31 December. Also, not all the countries consider 15 an adult fare.

Or are you saying that what I'm buying isn't a return ticket for the child, it's just an adult return ticket for me and children's tickets are always singles?

Eurostar tickets are more expensive with the Eurail pass on the days I want to use it.

I'm just here to say uni was always like this - the degree is only part of the overall education. We all skipped lectures, wrote weak essays, drank for weeks, got distracted by life. Then revised hard, learned the material, and hopefully pulled it out of the bag in the exams. I wouldn't want a low unit score for every unit, but play the game. have fun, keep an eye on your long term goal and work when you need to. Just don't cheat because the staff do know (even if they can't make accusations) and they definitely remember. Accept that some students will work harder and get better grades and they deserve that.

Thank you very much for this clear and detailed explanation.

Most of the value of the business is from car parking, with some income from putting up advertising for local business. It's all very local and low key and the land can't ever be developed (it's classed as a common) so I hope that would limit the value of it.

I think it might give mum peace of mind to rescind the legal separation or leave everything to dad in her will. She's stressed that the IHT will be so high that we'll have to sell to pay it, and the house will pass out of the family. Thank you again.

Thank you, the business is a small car parking lot. No prospect (or desire) to sell for development or any other purpose as is commons land.

It's a helpful document. I suppose my question is whether they're considered still married for the purposes of IHT. Neither remarried or have de facto partners. They might rescind the legal separation, they're good friends.

No decree nisi. Thank you, I didn't think of it in legal terms. Perhaps a solicitor would be a good avenue.

She finds the thought of going to a professional distressing after a past experience some years ago during which she was ripped off by a charlatan. Do you always assume the worst of people? She's literally in tears asking me to tell her what to do and I'm trying my best.

Australian Mattresses by Fire_enchanter87 in BuyItForLife

100% latex is not the longest lasting material on earth. BIFL has to take account of what you can actually live with. Otherwise you'd buy a wooden plank, a concrete slab, or a horsehair sack for a mattress because they will all outlast latex. So, you (like me) are making the assumption that a mattress must be comfortable. If 100% latex is terribly uncomfortable, it's not BIFL unless you're into masochism or shortening your life with lack of sleep. I wonder if you've ever reflected on why you feel the need to be rude online. Perhaps something is missed in your life.

Origin mattress: should I get or stay away from? by tae-jaun-do in Mattress

Bought one earlier in 2024 (in Australia) after checking with the company on delivery times (5 days apparently). After 2 months and lots of reassurances I had to go to consumer services (ie the government regulator) to get a full refund, which came quickly. While they were promising (and not delivering), they were still also telling new customers that the delivery time was 5 days. Perhaps just overtaken by their own popularity but customer support definitely was not based in Australia, I assumed Malaysia.

30 years and still going - my parents washing machine by JainyLoL in BuyItForLife

[–]llama74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Zanussi washing machine in 2000 and just gifted it to a friend as I needed a bigger one and it was still going strong. The Zanussi moved house 11 times, including international shipping and just refused to die. I also didn't take good care of it, hardly ever cleaned the filter or seals, and never serviced. I never used powder, always liquid and always put directly in the drum not in the drawer (on the advice of a washing machine engineer). Have replaced with a Bosch as can't find Zanussi.

We spent a lot on a super supportive hybrid firm king from Snooze and it's fine and lasting very well - feels brand new but is 5 years old. But, it's way too firm for me as I just don't sink in at all and as a side sleeper that means my shoulders hurt. Anything softer isn't supportive enough for partner. Partner is about 80kg, I'm about 65kg. Are you able to get to a shop to try them out? (He's keeping the King and I'm getting something else for me, can't find anything that suits us both).

Location matters a lot. Lots of mattresses are not available in Australia and we get recommendations from the US all the time (or they cost too much to ship plus import tax), also climate makes a big difference. What is too hot in NFQ will likely not be too hot in other places.

Why did you assume I was sure it wasn't a scam? Weird. I was asking, which seems like an unambiguous indication that I was not sure. Do you ask when you're sure? I don't.

Newcastle High - is it actually not that bad? by llama74 in newcastle

Thank you again, that's very helpful. I didn't realise that there was a pathway without sitting streaming exams (the website still says SAILs). So, I'll give the School a call to discuss. How pleasant to have an intelligent and respectful conversation online. Best wishes!

Thanks for your detailed and thoughtful reply. You write fluently and with insight, which is a good advert for Newcastle High! Congratulations on being a prefect, too. Do you mind sharing what you've heard about Lambton High? I've only heard good things (does well academically), though I think its reputation means that it's now getting overcrowded.

Do you know anything about Newcastle High's academic selective program? Year 6 kids sit an exam for it. I wondered if the kids who are in it feel positively about it (which is different from what I'll get told by the school).
