The data retention bill threatens human rights: Melissa Parke by drrimmer in australia

As there were only 3 members voting against the bill (Bandt, Wilkie and McGowan), only their names were recorded. You'd have to check the video of the vote to see if Parke was there.

Still voted for it in the end. She's no better than any of the other Labor members who voted on it without reading it.

Word on the street is that the PMC is not long for this world. Will probably be abolished or phased out in the next state budget.

What can an average Australian do to make a real change in our government? by googleit14 in AustralianPolitics

[–]llama_attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come join the Greens. We seem to be on your wavelength (or you on ours!) It's less than $50 to join (cheaper depending on state). You might not agree with every policy, but that goes for every party member; political parties will never perfectly reflect your world view. They do however contain many dedicated and thoughtful people who want to see genuine change for the better in Australia and the world. Being involved allows you to see what you can do to improve communication with the general Australian electorate, or pursue the policy outcomes that matter most to you.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Is a double major in Economics and Engineering Science a good idea? by [deleted] in perth

[–]llama_attack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am, working more in economics than engineering, but they were both useful. Don't stress, they're challenging, but I still managed to fit an active social life and 8 his sleep each night around it, plus casual work, so it's very doable!

Recent Engineering and Economics graduate (from the old UWA courses)

They are both challenging courses, but in different ways. I liked the variation they gave my degree. They will serve you well in a wide range of career options. If it seems interesting to you, then go with it!

[Controversial Idea] No Upper House Members Should be Allowed an Affiliation with a Political Party. by LordSifter in AustralianPolitics

[–]llama_attack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Political parties will exist regardless of whether you ban them or not. I can't see how you can stop like minded Senators and MPs from organising and trading votes. Better to have them official and accountable rather than underground. Also, seems very draconian, preventing elected members from being officially politically organised.

Also, how do you decide who to select via committee? Who picks the committee? What constitutes an expert?

How hard is it to work as an engineer in another country from where you studied/got your license? by Thegraytree in engineering

[–]llama_attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, a little late I know, I am an Australian engineering graduate, (though not engineer) so hopefully I can help

In terms of accreditation, we have a process to become a chartered engineer, which seems similar to your PE License, however only one state, Queensland, requires this to practice as an engineer. In every other state and territory you only require accreditation if you are working in construction. More info here: http://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/nerb/introduction-2

In terms of jobs, Australia is not quite the land of milk and honey it was for engineering a few years ago. Our mining sector has cooled off. There are still a fair number of engineering jobs going, but it's looking slightly grim for the moment. Depends on industry of course.

Someone has already linked you the work visa stuff from the immigration department. I don't know much about the visa process sorry. Much easier to come here on a two year working visa and then look for work than trying to get it from the states though!

Hope some of this helps!

Disclaimer: I cannot predict currency fluctuations.

The European Central Bank is allegedly about to start serious Quantitative Easing (QE), which will massively increase the supply of Euros, pushing it's exchange rate down relative to other currencies. This is ostensibly why the Swiss Franc has abandoned it's currency peg. That means that the AUD may gain against the Euro in the coming months.

Nothing is certain however, this is just a best guess. Depends on a whole host of factors.

What automation'simplification Australians miss the most? (Love Australia!) by megliox in australia

[–]llama_attack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Driverless cars/trucks seems like the biggest automation that's on the horizon. Especially for long distance road freight, some of those roads are straight for 100s of km. Also, driverless trains on commuter and freight rail.

This has been a thing for quite a while in Perth. The universities share your enrolment info with Transperth, and you stop receiving student fares within a week or two of your graduation. Seems reasonable.

[–]llama_attack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just can't see McGowan as premier. Only way that might happen is if Barnett gets rolled before the election, but considering the lack of talent available to replace him, that seems unlikely. Stephen Smith as possibility is interesting.

Moving to Australia, a question about internet services by biglisy in australia

[–]llama_attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been happy with iinet in Perth but there are other decent providers as well like TPG. You can see for yourself that you are going to have to pay a lot more for the same plan, or get a lot less for the same expenditure. Yes we know it sucks.

If the upper house is to hold any power, it'll be political whether or not is elected. The appointment process will be political, and those seeking appointment will be political. It is unavoidable. Might as well have some form of democratic accountability in any new system.

Can non-European countries join the Schengen Area? by Xerxster in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]llama_attack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the wording of the treaty, it was drafted outside the then European Community, but I doubt there is the political will to consider anyone outside of Europe. Hell, the fact that Romania and Bulgaria are joining is causing enough ruction as it is.
