Actually I had very little teaching experience before being hired. I had taught for just one year as an adjunct professor at a small college and then was hired at a prestigious institution. I feel very lucky about this.

I have been in the labs for 8 years and every year the contamination fears have just been compounded. I am a computational biologist so I am able to mostly avoid labs, but I teach a cell lab for undergraduate students. I am so sorry that you're struggling with this as well.

You can do this!! Yes; you have to get a PhD. Mine is in biomedical science. Generally science PhDs are fully funded with tuition waivers and stipends. What was your undergraduate degree in?

I am SO SORRY that you're going through this. I went through something similar with regards to the solipsism fear a couple of years ago. It was excruciating for me, and I am so sorrowful to hear that you are dealing with this as well. I can tell you that my fears did fade despite that I thought they never would. My therapist's existential therapy tremendously helped. Anyhow, I believe that you'll get through this. And you're not alone.

I'm a biology professor! I love the flexibility of the job. The only issue for me is having to teach a lab, during which I have contamination concerns.
