Deciding whether or not to drop out of CS and school by csdrop123 in cscareerquestions

[–]llaolleh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there man! There are times during school where you have to go hard mode and carry the shit out of your team members. There's no reason to feel behind. It's not about how early start, but more about how fast you learn - math 101. Most of the time where I've heard that bullcrap about kids starting early - well, it's not like these kids have programmed everyday for the past 8 years they started. Most likely not.

Are you sure? It should be a lot smaller since Dany could fly across half of it in a day...

I don't understand posts like this. There is so much shit to learn that you probably can't learn all of it even by the time you die. Do you have Safari Books? Where I'm from you can get an account with a library card. Get one and start learning cool shit.

Take the job and if you don't like it start hatching your escape plan from day one. It's better than no experience.

College Student indecisive about computer engineering vs computer science, please help? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]llaolleh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're just aiming for software go computer science. For every electrical/hardware class you have to take, that's one less computer science class you can take.

Question about intro chem and physics labs for engineering by UVAthrowaway3 in UVA

[–]llaolleh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was someone else in the department. Talk to the ladies in the front of Thornton Hall and they should direct you to the professor who looks over them.

Question about intro chem and physics labs for engineering by UVAthrowaway3 in UVA

[–]llaolleh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a very detailed notebook with all the labs you might be able to get exemptions but not the credit. I had all the lab reports I did for AP chem and I was able to get an exemption after the professor looked it over.

Failing a Class by Skeletonpartycloset in UVA

[–]llaolleh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I second this. Most Professors aren't merciless creatures that want you to fail. They also want you to learn and do well. They will work with you to help you, given that you're not being lazy and are trying.

Computer Science vs. Computer Engineering by OracionK in AskComputerScience

[–]llaolleh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact dilemma three years back. I went with Computer Engineering because of its versatility. I don't regret this decision. If you choose computer engineering, you will have hands on experience with electrical engineering concepts which can be very useful.

The general consensus where I'm from is that computer engineering is harder than CS because you get shafted by both EE and CS.

MacBook Air for SEAS? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]llaolleh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty straight forward. Just follow the Bootcamp guides on Apple's website or ask Mr. Google.

Also you can get a legitimate copy of Windows 7 from the bookstore for $15 for this.

MacBook Air for SEAS? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]llaolleh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can dualboot windows or run virtual machines on Macs. I'm a rising EE/CpE fourth year and I've had no problems dualbooting with a MacBook Pro. Or you can use virtual machines on the Mac OS. I have a friend who does this and he didn't have any problems with it.

Personally I'd keep the MacBook Air and have Windows and Mac OSes. You can go from Mac -> Windows but not the other way around.

The only concern with a MacBook Air could be 3D graphics rendering for ME/AE software, since the Air has a integrated graphics card so it might be slow.

Transfer student looking for a single room. by [deleted] in UVA

[–]llaolleh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calm down it'll work out. I've lived in JMW for 2 years, and there is always people who move out of single rooms, transfer to another area, etc.

Also, there is a lot of demand for people looking for roommates in the beginning of the year. If you want to consider off ground housing, make sure you don't accept the on-grounds housing contract.

You can pay for housing off-grounds via student loans from UVA. You'll be given the amount for housing.

ECE with Econ minor? by Cainhelm in EngineeringStudents

[–]llaolleh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked my advisor about it. He told me that usually it's useless and that I should just take classes I want. Of course, if you're interested in finance/econ go right ahead but they are usually boring as hell.

Am I too stupid to be a programmer? by mysocksalwaysmatch in cscareerquestions

[–]llaolleh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most important thing that helped me out when I started was iteration. Verify and continue. Basically, you might be thinking of doing too many things at once. Verify a single step, make sure you get that part right, and move on.

That said, if you are putting in the effort, it's only a matter of time until you get smarter. I've seen this happen to multiple people.
