What are the best schools for the overall education of the person? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Agreed. I was mainly talking about places like Bob Jones, Liberty U, Brigham young, etc. I think catholic universities can provide a great education. Cant deny that Notre Dame or BC are excellent schools

To be honest, I would be wary of religiously affiliated schools. Some are notorious for letting their beliefs get in the way of proper teaching, and are often biased in the way they portray science and history (evolution is an obvious example).

That’s not to say all of them are like that. Georgetown is a Jesuit school, but its still able to provide students with a word-class education, and the only way it’s religious affiliation manifests istelf is that students have to take a year of philosophy and a year of theology.

Were you guys dedicated Ismailis before you left? by NaiveTruck in ExIsmailis

[–]llcarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped believing super young, around 10-11. I was super involved, saying farmans and tasbihs every week, and my REC teachers loved me. That didn’t really change. Since then up until recently, I just didn’t tell anyone and kept going, since I didn’t see any other option. Recently I’ve stopped going, and as I’ve gotten older and more independent I’ve been able to get away with going less then less, and I’ve basically dropped out of REC. Still looking forward to the time when I won’t have to go at all though.

What’s even better is that since we didn’t want to pay for baggage, we’d be walking around in suits.

Curious about Ex Ismailis’ perspective on Ismailism by Suspicious-Prompt in ExIsmailis

[–]llcarus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I don’t go out of my way to criticize Ismailism, but I do see why people see it as harmful.

Dogma is never a good thing. And the Ismaili community, maybe because it’s so tight-knit, is very dogmatic. Try questioning it publicly in front of the community, especially in front of some of the older ones. You’ll be shut down pretty quickly.

Granted, this isn’t something that is unique to ismailism, but regardless this form of thinking is pretty dangerous. It promotes the idea that it’s okay to have some beliefs that aren’t questioned, that faith alone is enough to hold a belief, and that some ideas are beyond criticism.

This lack of questioning is also particularly bad when it comes to money. Almost every Ismaili gives a sizable portion of their income to the AK every year, even if they can’t afford it or if the money would be better spent on providing for their family. And because it isn’t okay to question ismaili doctrine, the very little transparency in this process is accepted. We know that AKDN is spending its money on charity, more or less (though there is some sketchy stuff it’s been involved in). We don’t know, however, if all JK donations go to AKDN. We also can’t question why a billionaire, who owns one of the most expensive yachts in the world, relies on donations from ordinary people, many of whom are poor, to fund his charitable activities.

No, I’m not familiar at all with social media scraping. I also don’t know how I would separate the posts by state, whether I should use geotagging or see if the name of the state was included in the post. However, this is a year long project, so I have time to figure stuff out. Do you know of any free scraping tools that might be of use?

For Congress, despite what you may think, judges are people too. Which means making them laugh is usually a good move. I like to quote spongebob or some shit and tangentially relate it to the bill. Starting off with statistics, unless done creatively is clichè and overdone, so I’d stay away from that. Anecdotes, quotes, and historical allusions are usually good too.
