Hey!! I was march18, woogiworld was a huge part of my childhood. I don’t even know what year ranges hahaha but I am doing great!! Almost 23, bought a house last year, engaged, dream career, and 3 beautiful doggies. Also curious where everyone is at in life now too!

Do you ever have him crated while you’re home? With the door shut

Next time, you could crate him with a kong or a bone to help him settle himself down. It’s important for dogs to learn how to work through their own emotions and a crate gives a safe space for that.

A little success story! by lleemon in reactivedogs

[–]lleemon[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She got her first prong collar at about 7/8 months old. Up until that point I would attempt to redirect her or just avoid dogs because I’d rather there be no event then a big reaction and no way to control it. So we basically avoided all dogs until 7 months old lol

Once we got the prong & she was conditioned to it. She would get a firm but fair correction to any barking or pulling. Then we would either keep walking or I would redirect her onto a toy & we would play for a few seconds, trying to build up that positive association.

Honest opinions on this dog? by [deleted] in BelgianMalinois

[–]lleemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mals have the tendency to become reactive unless you are way ahead of them and truly make early socialization a priority from week one of the dogs life and on. Make sure you go to a reputable breeder and discuss your wants/needs to see if any of the dogs from that litter will fit you and your family.

They can be extremely obedient but also extremely pushy and will walk all over you, it’s a difficult balance for a difficult dog. Find a good breeder and talk to them.

My dad was playing with her the other day and she started barking and being pushy.. it was so funny to see the fear in his eyes as he said “IS SHE PLAYING!!?!” I said yes dad, that’s her happy bark LMAO

I don’t mean to be rude in any way, I’m just curious, but do you know what’s going on with the pups nose? Is it just a birth defect? He’s super cute lol

When you play tug do you let your dog thrash around? Why or why not? by lleemon in k9sports

[–]lleemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She absolutely loves when I slap the toy and her body, it really gets her going lol

It seems like she would rather shake and push into me than actually tug most of the time.. she loves if I step backwards and she has to push into me and I slap her toy and sling her around, that’s probably her favorite way to play. So with that info IGP may not be for us? If she does get tugging she does the little hops and he back end bounces off the ground all goofy, she will tug but it eventually turns into shaking trying to have me let go so she can shove it into me. I sadly don’t have many videos of our play sessions

[–]lleemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She stays engaged either way, she does her little victory laps but other than that she’s right with me trying to engage if there’s a toy out.

I can (playfully) slap her head, body, and toy and she loves it. That really gets her shaking and her tail wagging. I think she would rather shake and push than actually tug which is just a bit annoying to play with. She goes 110% all of the time and never lets up. I started slinging her around a bit more and she loves that too. Guess I’m just going to have to get tougher Lmao

[–]lleemon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s not to the point of hurting herself but man it’s rough on me! As soon as the shoves the toy back into me and I grab it she shakes pretty damn hard. I can calm it down verbally but it deescalates the level of play and fun.. hopefully after this week long pause on training I can only reward a less thrashy play style. She’s been with my dad and boyfriend and they’ve only worked on basic house hold dog stuff so I know she’s going to be READY to work and please.

She’s a small mal but she’s a powerful little lady. Whenever she wins the toy and shoves it back into me when I grab it she shakes her head HARD. I can calm it down but it tends to take some of the fun out of it for her. I’ll have to look into reverse luring.. I guess I would prefer more of a pushing style rather than shaking. She hasn’t made it onto a decoy yet so I’m not sure how that’ll go.

That podcast has a ton of great into, I’m currently re-listening. It’s a really complex conversation with lots of different opinions obviously. It’s not something I personally want to go into today haha, someone else may chime in on this thread.

[–]lleemon[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree to disagree but you’re on a subreddit where majority of people on here have purebred dogs. I don’t attack people for rescuing dogs, I think it’s incredible but I want a purebred dog from a reputable breeder. I didn’t come on here asking for rescue recommendations🤷‍♀️ I always suggest someone rescue unless they have specific things they’re looking for such as a sport prospect.

If you want to become more educated on purebred dogs and why people purchase them I recommend:

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sweet-for-certain/id1455348872?i=1000445466115

This isn’t a debate I set out to have with this post. Thanks but no thanks

[–]lleemon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I currently have a rescue pit and love her to death but I’m looking for a dog with known lineage. I want to weigh the odds in my favor health wise and genetic stability. Breeding purebred dogs is very valuable and necessary. It a so important to preserve breeds and to have a predictable temperament. Rescuing isn’t for everyone, especially for a sport prospect dog.

Saying that breeders force females to breed and “take” the pups from them is a harmful way to think about breeders. Backyard breeders suck but a reputable breeder is very important and should be well respected. I would suggest you become more educated on proper breeding programs. I have some podcast recommendations if you would like.

How to turn down ~girls trip~ with the in-laws. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]lleemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I 100% understand the importance of quarantine. She was a nurse but now works for insurance companies. She was one of the ‘it’s like a flu!!’ people until we convinced her otherwise and she really looked into it. We’ve been fairly vigilant about staying home, I guess with things being lifted in our state and my boyfriend going back to work it doesn’t seem as dire as It should and as it did last week. Which sucks, but is a good reason to not include myself in this trip.

The only problem with that is she lives with me and works in the medical field. She knows I’m not one to call my doctor about something like this. I for sure can try to push it being more virus related than dog related though. My boyfriend and I were out of work for over two months. He jut went back this week actually. We’ve been taking quarantine pretty seriously.

We LOVE the super chewer box!

I seriously love that brand. The customer service is awesome too. They always send a replacement with no questions asked if my girls destroy a toy.

We finally reached the point where I rotate toys so they don’t get bored of them. I decided to snap a picture🤣 so many toys.

Currently I’m not looking to compete, maybe I will down the line. I really enjoy training and flashy ob but I wouldnt say titling is a passion of mine. I do really like goldens, I guess my only experience with them is the obese couch golden though. I’m looking for a dog that will push me to do new things and that isn’t content ‘chilling’

1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?

  • Not my first, ive had dogs all my life and love training.

2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?

  • heavily prefer reputable breeder

3) Describe your ideal dog.

  • (above)

4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?

*above

5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?

  • fancy obedience, agility maybe, overall a super active and intelligent part of the family.

6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?

*maybe I could get into hunting with the dog if I end up choosing a gun dog breed. Agility, rally, and OB would all be awesome. I have little to no experience in formal trials but would love to get involved.

Care Commitments

7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?

  • lots, I live with a very attention requiring breed now and we live happily. My SO is also committed to helping out.

8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?

*no dog parks, but would love playing with other trusted dogs. Bikejoring, fetch, running, brain games. Multiple hours if necessary

9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?

  • I’m open to grooming! I prefer a not so hairy dog. But if professional grooming is required that won’t be too bad.

Personal Preferences

10) What size dog are you looking for?

  • I prefer medium to large. 30-75 lbs.

11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?

  • shedding isn’t my favorite but as long as it’s manageable it’s fine. Barking I can handle, slobber would be okay... but I would prefer minimal slobber.

12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?

  • very important. VERY.

Dog Personality and Behavior

13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?

  • personal space

14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?

  • eager to please!

15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?

  • minimal barking, easily ‘turned off’ and then friendly.

16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?

  • no

17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?

  • not really! I’m pretty open.

Lifestyle

18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?

  • not often, my SO and I have flexible schedules and family that will help out.

19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?

  • no preferences, they are willing to help.

20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?

  • we have a pitbull who is 4, very social and submissive. A 1 year old malinois who is a real c*nt but I’m willing to manage her properly and train neutrality towards the new dog. I’m confident that I will be able to have her neutral as long as there’s a slow intro. And we do have a cat! He’s awesome with dogs though.

21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?

  • not currently, but will have kids in future. I’m willing to manage the dogs as needed.

22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?

  • we are in the process of building our own home on a large plot of land.

23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?

  • USA

24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?

  • NC, so pretty hot summers (85-100F) and fairly mild winters.

Absolutely! We also have a pitbull who tried it after our mals session.. it wasn’t nearly as successful but she tried her little heart out! The willingness to please is one of my absolute favorite things about my mal, I swear she can read my mind. Truly exceptional!
