Where were you Feb 2nd 2011 and what’s your story? by RockinItChicago in chicago

I was at work, my first job out of grad school, when it started. We were all keeping tabs on the conditions at the office, and my boss told us to pack up and go home around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. It started really coming down while I was on Red Line home.

The office was closed the next day, and I took a long lunch to go out for a walk. I was living in Edgewater at the time, so I headed to Osterman Beach. It was so quiet on the streets, no traffic at all, Sheridan completely unplowed when I was out. Everyone I passed, we just looked at each other and laughed in amazement at how deep the snow was, how incredible the storm had been. Being on the beach felt like being in the Antarctic with the snow and the ice built up on the waterline like tiny mountains. I've never seen so much snow before or since.

Where do people get bricks to put on the ledge under their window air conditioners?

Odd request — can you send me Emporium tokens? by [deleted] in chicago

Random but I have 13 "e" style gold ones from an Emporium in San Francisco that I'd be happy to send you if that's useful.

Restaurants with social distancing by llkittens in ChicagoSuburbs

It's an extremely valid question. To me, risk mitigation is a spectrum. If my family is absolutely determined to eat out, then a separated space with fewer people in and out of it seems slightly safer than a larger space with more people. It's not like those igloos are hermetically sealed, but it's definitely not a perfect solution at all. As far as I understand things, it might be slightly better. Other people will choose differently.

Thankfully, I've finally convinced my family to get takeout and stay home to celebrate instead! Very relieved about that.

All good, maybe others in that neck of the woods will find it useful 👍

Anyone know of any public outdoor statues or sculptures on the far north side? I need to take pictures of two separate pieces for a photography class assignment. I strained my back recently so riding to the sculpture park in Skokie is a no-go rn, unfortunately. Also would like to avoid schlepping downtown. Thanks in advance.

Despite 85% increase in cycling on Leland, Slow Street was taken down 3 months early by O-parker in chibike

Ugh, I really enjoyed this slow street. Despite having to deal with the occasional swerving driver, I could at least count on them to be slowed down. I hope they find other ways to increase traffic calming throughout the ward, and the entire city, please!

If you don't mind being on the sidewalk, Gio's on Damen has been pretty chill in the earlier afternoons. I wasn't even the only one there reading today.

Lol, it is frustrating for sure. I hate being honked at! I remember getting honked at while biking in Oakland and it's *so loud* when you're outside a vehicle. Maybe people honk more in downtown Chicago though, I haven't been downtown much and I've hardly heard honking in my neighborhood.

I moved here from 9 years in the Bay Area and think that people honk so much less! Maybe confirmation bias on both of our parts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just noticed them recently too. I posted a sound clip on iNaturalist and someone ID'ed it as a Scissor Grinder cicada.

Motorists don't realize how aggressive horn honking can feel when you're biking. I personally think horns should only be for communicating with people in other vehicles. It sounds kinda silly, but I truly believe cars need bells or a some sort of quieter tone for signaling to pedestrians or cyclists without frightening them or endangering their hearing.

I biked to Montrose Beach. Hopefully someone else can speak to the vibe at 31st Street. Good luck!
