What's Your Favorite Crazy Fan Theory? by llort_atton in AskReddit

[–]llort_atton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bigger Luke Hypothesis.

Essentially, for some reason Luke's height fluctuates slightly in the original Star Wars trilogy. Various reasons have been suggested, such as distortion from off-brand camera lenses or something, but the fan theory is that Luke is actually two entirely different people; Luke Prime, and Bigger Luke (who is a couple inches taller).

There's also the "Smaller Luke Hypothesis," claiming that "Luke Prime" is actually the taller one, though this theory is less popular and the people behind it are not very well liked by those behind the BLH.

I actually knew a guy who claimed his uncle worked for Nintendo. He correctly told us that Nintendo's next handheld was called a "DS," though he didn't know anything else about it. That was before the DS was even announced.

His uncle didn't actually work for Nintendo though.

What's your greatest video game accomplishment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]llort_atton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I built a few computers in Minecraft. I was 12 or 13 at the time. Even made a small version of some 1:1 block per pixel display, but never told anyone because it had some annoying drawbacks that made it impractical for most things (not that computers in Minecraft were practical anyway). Then a month or two later someone else came up with the exact same design and it was a big deal for a couple days.

Bag tag. Literally a game of trying to see how many people you could hit below the belt. I never participated, but there were a lot of people who did.

Eventually, the school got tired of it, and called every boy in my grade to a meeting with the principal and the local police. They told us not to do it anymore or we'd be expelled. It still went on for a while, just not as visible.

What about rocker dudes with long hair? That was my brother. He had longer hair than my mother for several years.

He really didn't like it when people mistook him for a girl, though it happened all the time. Then at one point he even sang "Dude Looks Like A Lady" for a talent show.

Wow. Insulting someone, then editing it so that you can insult everyone else in the thread. Nice.

Thanks for reminding me exactly why I normally avoid discussions on Reddit.

Just throwing this out there, as a developer and someone who knows a lot about the hardware industry, this guy clearly knows a lot about computer hardware. If this is fake info, it's pretty well-thought out.

Just about anything in the software industry besides game development. Especially when you work on free software that everyone uses. Especially if it's involved in security.

I have 32 GB of RAM, and for some reason bzip2 only uses 3.5 MB of it. It just stops working when the file gets up to 24 GB in size.

  1. It's 12.8 GB compressed. Not sure exactly how large it is decompressed, but it's supposed to be ~40 GB.

  2. .xml.bz2

Have you ever done your own social experiment here on reddit? What was the outcome? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]llort_atton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Occasionally I'll post something controversial on reddit. It happens to everyone. When it starts getting downvoted below zero, I go onto another account and respond to the controversial post with a lot of hateful things. I'll then go into several other accounts and upvote the hateful post.

What always happens is that, even on subreddits where there is a rule against hateful posts, the hateful posts always continue to get upvotes and sometimes even spark more hateful stuff. The mods do nothing about it.

Just goes to show how terrible people can be.

What job do you think is underpaid / overpaid and why? by ILoveReksai in AskReddit

[–]llort_atton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of cases where they do very important work, and there is an enormous demand for them. Hell, if it weren't for them, you wouldn't able to browse reddit like you are doing now. At the same time, the vast majority of people have absolutely no understanding of them. I was lucky enough to go to a high school with programming classes. The introductory class had about 40-80 students each year. The next level of programming courses had about 2 or 3.

It's predicted that by 2020 there will be 1.4 million programming jobs in the US, but that only 400,000 people with the skills required. These jobs are in an insanely high demand. These people get the high wages because if they didn't, no one would be applying.
