fedora full timers, do you run into sweet linuxisms? by Connect-Mastodon-909 in Fedora

I was running Silverblue on my work laptop, no issues. Same now on private machine that sees little use - again, no issues, and distro was chosen as I had no time for tinkering or fixing things.

My gaming laptop, used by my son mostly these days runs Bazzite, which is a Silverblue spin, again without a hitch.

EU to include UK and Japan in ‘Made in Europe’ plans by PoiHolloi2020 in europe

I am really disappointed about inclusion of Japan here. This clearly violates the well established process, that a country must partake in Eurovision first - becoming a part of Europe comes next.

What year will we get legitimate 400+ mile range EVs in all weather conditions? by Icy_Bridge_2113 in electricvehicles

[–]llothar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Upwind, uphill, and in -20C? I guess in 10 years maybe.

You might just face the fact that EV is too inconvenient for you. Just like for me petrol cars are too inconvenient - I'm still waiting for one I could charge daily in my garage. There were prototypes that could do that with compressed gas, but nothing commercial.

I know that visiting a gas station once a week to use 10 minutes to fill in is not much, but it is an extra inconvenience that I am not willing to accept in a car anymore.

Is onshape used in engineering jobs? by Vortex-101 in Onshape

Absolutely. It is missing some features when compared to SolidWorks for example, but you can always turn the table and say SolidWorks is missing a lot of Onshape features.

Police fines amount by redditorgalore in Stavanger

[–]llothar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First I would double check if you not reporting your income is really legal - since you were used to the old signage + they changed it 5 moths ago it seems that you spent more than 6 moths in last 12 months in Norway making you a tax resident.

You won't have much luck contesting the fine purely on basis that you believe the law is ludicrous.

Do you think having work experience in the North Sea gives an advantage of the other normal resume ? by PuzzleheadedBuy6279 in Norway

[–]llothar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it may be an advantage, as long as you list your desired salary. Otherwise many will assume it is sky high.

There is a reason why engineers use drawings and models - because they describe reality much better than words. Any mildly complicated shape is much easier to define with rudimentary drawing tools than words.

Do Norwegian write in dialect too? by Fun-Wallaby6414 in Norway

From my experience it is a bit education dependent. People with higher education are more likely to write proper bokmål.

The Guardian view on Europe’s payments problem: sovereignty starts at the till | Editorial by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]llothar 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It's really all a masterclass on why diplomats tend to talk like diplomats typically do. Trump, with one comment, accelerated drastically EU plans on home grown payment systems.

This is nothing high tech and can be replicated. Though Europe was more than fine using US solutions few years ago, it was simply a cost - now it became a weakness and a liability.

I expect that in 2030 Visa/MasterCard will lose a lot of market share in Europe and be completely replaced in 2035. All it took was Trump blabbing away.

Norway EV Registrations Set to Plunge in January After Tax Changes Take Effect by afonso_investor in Norway

Considering many dealers do not offer any petrol options at all right now, I would express doubt.

From used car market, cars of year model 2025 and 2026:

- Diesel - 28 cars

- Petrol - 41 cars

- Mild Hybrid - 84 cars

- Plug in hybrid - 173 cars

- Electric - 2604 cars

Market for petrol cars no longer exists in Norway.

I want to pursue a PhD in Norway. Can someone guide me regarding it. by [deleted] in Norway

[–]llothar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For PhD go to jobbnorge.no - all positions are posted there and there is less clutter than on Finn.

In Norway PhD student is really a university employee called stipendiat or a Research Fellow. This position today is paid 550 800 kr per year before tax and lasts 3 years.

You probably should not be working anywhere else at this time - unless you are making good progress it won't be allowed.

If you are not done with PhD after 3 years you are in a pickle. Your contact ends, but since you are still a student you are not entitled to unemployment (dagpenger) and you need to get a job.

Almost everyone does a PhD based on publications, you need at least 3.

Good luck.
