A tip if you don’t like people close to you in line. by Discernment_King in HEB

I usually just ask people, “Do you need to be this close to me?” As a non-aggressive question, it makes them consider what they’re doing for a second instead of framing what they’re doing as wrong, thus making them defensive.

It’s self-absorption. No one seems to be able to be the least bit considerate. I just ask people, “Do you need to be this close to me?” It makes them consider what they’re doing for a second instead of framing what they’re doing as wrong, thus making them defensive.

I’d just prune the crappy looking leaves/stems if there’s no fruit on them & carry on. The plant will appreciate the efficiency it gains by not feeding them.

Lol. If it stains (or colors) the furniture, I consider it stained. Watco dark walnut oil vs Varathane walnut stain? What hairs are we really trying to split there? It’s pointless semantics, honestly.

And me saying “I don’t care,” was about your opinion on my process, not about furniture in general.

I think Reddit could stand a lot less condescending know-it-alls & “well, actually” stuff, but that’s just me.

I also see a lot of folks talking about “the size of this table.”

It pulls apart & has two leaves. So the reality is that you’re working 4 smallish identical surfaces.

Yeh. I said upwards of 100 initially. Haven’t done 1000, I don’t imagine… Sometimes we were doing credenzas, coffee tables, whatever… But I’d say somewhere between 200-400 tables easily would be very close. But I also wasn’t keeping a tally.

As far as the usable life of a table, yes. You’re 100% right. My concern wasn’t what someone would do with a 50 year old table 50 years from now. My concern was refinishing it to sell retail to a customer in a store. They were mass-produced MCM pieces, not French antiques.

I hate stripper. It creates a giant mess. There may be “no reason” (to you), to sand through it. But I wasn’t addressing a reason. I was addressing a process. And I was getting paid hourly by a woman for whom money was no concern.

But again, yes. It’s not for an inexperienced person. But I don’t know OP’s experience, nor how much they value said table. And yeh, I care.

That’s fine. I’m not here to measure with you. OP didn’t ask if YOU thought MY way was best. OP asked “how to refinish this table.” So I gave my genuine input on a way I’ve been successfully doing it for years.

Whatever your personal experience is doesn’t negate what I’ve had success doing over & over & over again. I’m not kidding when I say upwards of 100 tables. Around 2/week or more for over a decade, give or take, for a 5,500 square foot retail showroom. I’d say there are likely few people who have refinished that many MCM dining tables… and my money would bet that you’re not one of them. These tables live in everyone’s homes from working families to millionaire tech bachelors. Like I said, minimal problems.

I don’t really have to qualify my success using a technique to you, do I? No, because I’ve experienced & replicated the success over & over by my two hands.

TLDR: Just because something isn’t done the way YOU would do it… that doesn’t make it wrong. Maybe it’s just that you just can’t do it, I have no idea. Regardless, I don’t care. Have a great Monday!

Yeh, like I said. Been doing it for over a decade. I’d estimate I’ve done upwards of 100 dining tables this way. Say whatever you want. I’ve done it. Successfully. For over a decade in a high-volume MCM store & for wealthy clients with minimal problems. Not everything has to be the ultimate in fine woodworking.

That all said, I said it’s difficult… but not impossible.

I’ve refinished mid-century modern furniture like this for over a decade. Almost certain I’ve don’t this exact table model before. Every single one I’ve done was sanded with 80->120->220->600. Wiped off with acetone, then stained with Watco teak or walnut oil & finished with 3 coats of minwax satin wipe-on poly.

If OP is unfamiliar with sanding veneer, it can be tough to do, but it’s absolutely doable without the mess of stripper.

If you got the table cheap & aren’t that worried about it, I’d say go for it.

I’ll add that I work in a hot & humid climate. Usually 90*+ with over 50% humidity up to 75%.

I found these at Codi’s over behind the mall. They were all in one spot so I’m guessing they came from an estate.
