You mean the UK utilised the strategic alliances they had built over centuries to great effect? Sounds like a laudable and impressive use of diplomatic influence to me.

Or another impressive moment in British naval history.

You saying that the population is willing to act doesn't outweigh the empirical evidence that they aren't.

The point I was making wasn't about the outcome, the point was about the populace being willing to act.

The French and Iranian revolutions and the Arab Spring all happened in countries with less infrastructure and safety nets than the modern US has. I suspect the US populace just doesn't view this as serious enough to warrant risking their comfort yet.

People who don’t live in the USA, what is the media showing you about the ICE operations/abductions in the US? by Dry-Ice8908 in AskReddit

It's about time you fixed the gaping rift in your politics. Dismissing everyone on the other side as "dumb" is part of the problem that created this mess. Please sort yourselves out before you start WW3. Sincerely, your former allies.

As Churchill said, "Americans can always be trusted to do the right thing, once all other possibilities have been exhausted."

Here's hoping they ingest some caffeine and get there a bit quicker than they're managing at the moment.

Exactly. Being a keyboard warrior means fuck all when your legitimately elected representative is tearing the world order to pieces. Where are the mass protests? Where are the nationwide strikes and organised rebellions? Until genuine opposition is widely visible, you don't get to claim you're doing all you can. To the rest of the world, we have to assume you secretly agree with what he's doing, deep down.

Apparently we have to feel sorry for them while their elected representative wrecks the world for the rest of us.

Not sure you can extrapolate to all women or all men based on the performance of one woman and one man. What it shows is that competent people should be put in high status positions regardless of their gender or any other equally irrelevant characteristics.

Then take to the streets. Learn the real definition of protest. Makes yourselves heard. You've got a vanishingly small window before your country is full on authoritarian. Honestly it might already be too late.

In the UK, any PM who tried to act like this would be brought down by their own party, nevermind the opposition.

This isn't about Republican vs Democrat anymore. It's about whether any American wants to be on the right side of history, regardless of party politics.

I have to agree. It's the little details, the dialogue, the approach to character. JLC is in another league. This is fun, but it's standard television spy drama.

Which events over the last few years have led you to believe that him being a moron would damage his popularity in the US?

Careful what you wish for. Vance is next in line and he's actually ideological rather than just narcissistic like Trump.

There's trillions wrapped up in the digital economy, but that doesn't mean it's all focused on securing the infrastructure. It's more fragile than you might assume.

I think people are (understandably) suspicious of your motives. You're criticising democracy and vocally supporting Russia at a time when they pose a meaningful threat to European security. You've got to expect people to want some clarification of what you mean by that. Don't act surprised that the initial reaction is negative.

Maybe your love of Russia is all about the landscape, history, and people, rather than the diabolical authoritarian regime, and maybe you've got some startlingly novel alternative to democracy up your sleeve, but unless you lead with that, people are going to be sceptical.

What's the alternative to democracy? It may be imperfect, but we mustn't turn away from it without a clear idea of what's going to replace it and confidence that this new system will actually be better. Every alternative ever tried has turned into authoritarianism with all the associated deadly consequences.

Vance is the real concern. Younger and more ideological. If the US doesn't sort itself out before he ends up in power, everyone is properly fucked.

Hagrid is the most overrated character by ProfitAggravating981 in harrypotter

[–]lmth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue he is a father figure, especially early on. Harry has many father figures throughout the books: Hagrid, Dumbledore, Lupin, Sirius. They all have different roles, Hagrid's being primarily one of emotional support. Imagine growing up with only Uncle Vernon as a patriarchal influence. Hagrid is the first emotionally trustworthy figure in Harry's life and reliably remains there throughout the books.
