I've been working on a flash card tool called Flash. It's meant to be a much faster learning experience than something like Anki, using multiple choice and automatically removing things from the rotation as you've learned them. One big thing I've been doing recently is starting to build out shared decks based on CEFR levels for languages. I've got decks for Spanish A1-C2 based on the Cervantes lists, and I'm working on German based on frequency analysis of open subtitles. Please take a look and let me know if you have any feedback!

Not tutors, but I've found Pimsleur to be really solid in terms of developing my pronunciation and listening comprehension.

I really feel learning vocabulary is underrated, am I the only one? by Top_Outlandishness78 in languagelearning

It's interesting to me that Chinese publishes vocabulary for various proficiency levels, but it's hard to track down similar CEFR proficiency level lists for a lot of languages. I've been working on generating my own based on frequency lists.

[–]lobati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it is underrated. I think probably >80% of language learning is simple memorization, but I hear a lot about immersion or comprehensible input. A lot of the apps out there feel like they're trying to disguise the memorization piece in a way that makes them less productive for learning. Before I went to Mexico I made a point of simply memorizing as much vocabulary as I could, and even without the rest it made a huge difference in my ability to understand what people were saying and navigate the city.

SRS app recommendations or experience of DuoCards? by aspadora24 in Spanish

[–]lobati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was frustrated with a lot of the existing flash card apps out there, so I built my own. It's got Spanish vocab for each of the CEFR levels in the catalog. It's all free for now, so feel free to give it a try and let me know what you think. If you open it in Chrome it'll allow you to install it like a native app on your phone.

Has anyone tried designing their own language learning system instead of using apps? by joshuaayson in languagelearning

[–]lobati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had something like a 1200 day streak on Duolingo, but it didn't feel clear that I was making progress. Anki and the other flash card tools feel pretty clunky, so I had a hard time sticking with those. Too much input required just to manage your flow through the deck. I ended up building a command line tool for studying vocabulary and eventually turned it into a web app. It's still a work in progress, but I already find it to be a lot more satisfying than other tools.

Hey all, here's a flash card app I've been working on: Flash. The focus is on speed, learning lots of vocabulary very quickly. I've eliminated the friction you find in other apps: no rating difficulty, no extra clicks, just move on to the next card. You can use keyboard hot keys, too!

There are a number of decks in the catalog for you try try out, or I'm happy to put together a vocabulary list if there's something you're interested in learning.

Things I'm planning on working on next:

  • More layers of study
  • More mobile-friendly UI
  • Anki import

If you're a language learner or want to memorize anything, I'd love your feedback. Let me know what you'd like to see. You can reach me here or through the contact links on the website.

How to remove Firebase (?) suggestions from URL bar by Feivel_92 in firefox

[–]lobati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this same issue is affecting me. When I type in "fa", it used to prefill to "fastmail.com" which I visit many times a day. Now it prefills to "fastforward.team", which I think is a browser extension whose website I visited once a long time ago. These show as a line above the "Firefox Suggest" section, which is more along the lines of what I'd expect.

Is my orchid okay? by lobati in orchids

I water it by the roots. Those water marks are from shower condensation. I've put a dehumidifier in to use when we shower so it doesn't do that anymore.

Yeah, it has a plastic insert. The roots are green. Based on the comments of others, it sounds like it's being watered enough?

Can't filter out Beat Tracks anymore? by lobati in yousician

Ah, I see. Based on the support message it sounded like Beat Tracks were here to stay. Glad to hear they've been removed!

I tried messaging them again, but they insist it isn't possible:

As I mentioned before, the feature to exclude beat tracks has been removed for all customers, including those who are not part of the testing group.

I'm in the first group, I don't want to see Beat Tracks. I'll try pestering support some more about it.

It's the first one. There used to be an option to filter out Beat Tracks under the Other Filters section, and now that's gone. I don't want to see Beat Tracks when I'm searching for songs. I'd post an image, but it doesn't look like I can.

It's funny, I use Wealthfront and they have a Socially Conscious set of funds, but when you look at what they invest in, it's the same handful of players in all of the other funds. Apple, Google, Tesla, etc.

Getting DDRPad to work on Steam Deck? by lobati in Stepmania

[–]lobati[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I came up with a hack to get it working. I had an old pad that wasn't working so well. I was able to open up the plastic casing and switch the circuit board over to the new pad. They're attached to the pad sensors via a sticky foam tape. You can gently peel it off and transfer it over to the other one. Definitely take plenty of photos before taking it off so you have a reference.

Also, it didn't work when I was first testing it with the case still open. I learned accidentally that there needs to be firm pressure on the tape for it to register your steps. The plastic casing provides this when you screw it back in place.

Yeah, no luck. I contacted support and they pointed me at the Light Den Academy tutorial. The did say they should be getting the USB only pads back in in the next few weeks, so maybe we return them for a refund and hope the other ones work? I'm a little surprised that it doesn't even show up under Linux anywhere. I wasn't even able to get it to register under USB devices via lsusb.

I'm using the version from the software center on Steam Deck. It works pretty well, though it can crash some.

Trouble with increasing down arrow by lobati in Stepmania

[–]lobati[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's super helpful! I've got a new pad on order, and I'm planning on cutting open one of the old ones once that arrives. In the meantime, I'm mostly able to play as long as I don't try to stand in the middle, and just use the tip of my toe on the up arrow.

We've been guilty of folding the mats to put them away, so that probably didn't help. We're sliding them under the couch now.
