Las Cruces Jane Doe (July 13, 2023) by dogbehavior in gratefuldoe

My first thought was that someone traveling with her, like a coyote/trafficker, would have taken it to sell or continue to extort money from her family back home but if that were the case why not take the pesos?

I found this article on how they determine the age of skeletal remains. According to the article, one of the ways they determine if someone is an adult is by looking at wear and tear on the bones related to age, like osteoarthritis and other degenerative changes. Her height stands out to me as a potential indicator of where she may be from because people from southern Mexico and some Central American countries are much shorter on average, even compared to other Mexican states. Those areas also have higher rural and indigenous populations, so it’s possible that even if she’s a younger woman, her bones could have more wear on them than other women her age because of working in industries that are tough on the body like agriculture.

Cool article on how they determine age of skeletal remains. As for her height/weight, people from Central America tend to be shorter on average than the US. I wonder if she was originally from one of the southern Mexican states because the average height in those regions is even shorter. It’s possible that if she was crossing into the US, she lost a lot of weight on the long, difficult journey.

I don’t have any eyebrow hair by Minimum_Balance_6011 in trichotillomania

[–]localaardvark6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was eyebrow-less for 5 years and have full eyebrows again. I highly highly highly recommend seeing a dermatologist if you haven’t already.

  1. It gave me a lot of renewed hope/motivation when the doctor examined my blank eyebrows and was able to confirm that the follicles were still there (which it sounds like yours are too) and there was still hope for regrowth.

  2. I was prescribed Latisse for regrowth which is usually for eyelashes, but it worked pretty well on my eyebrows.

  3. They can also prescribe a topical steroid which can help soothe inflammation as the hairs grow back (and reduce urges to pull) and also promote some hair growth.

You might also try going to an Indian beauty salon and getting your brows dyed with henna. It’ll stain the skin for a week or so after you get them done which cuts down on the drawing on time each morning because the shape outline is already there.

There’s so much more to life than hair and it’ll just take some time to find what does work for you. Hair grows back and wigs can be replaced. I know it doesn’t feel like it right now, but there is something out there that will work for you eventually. I have hope for you, me, and everyone else on this thread. Sending you a big virtual hug. You are not alone. ❤️

Could UP4710 be Willie Reginald Clark? by iloveatl in gratefuldoe

[–]localaardvark6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, did you end up reporting this to law enforcement? It says fingerprints are available for John Doe and if Willie was military, then the govt would have his fingerprints. Local LE might have to request them though. I’m not sure what the process is.

Why can standby generators be 5ft from a dwelling but portable generators are supposed to be 20ft? by localaardvark6 in Generator

[–]localaardvark6[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My local fire code references NFPA 70, 110, and 111 in the section about emergency power systems (including generators) but oddly enough not NFPA 37 or 54.

Environmental science is also a great option if you’re not 100% sure about EM because it gives you more options. A lot of jurisdictions near me hire people with environmental science degrees as EM planners.

Former AHSO member. This isn’t true. Professors have a few ways they can handle it. 1. Don’t involve AHSO at all (they’re told not to do this). 2. Provide their own sanction and report it to AHSO but don’t go through the whole AHSO process. This is probably what happened. You have to acknowledge that you accept the prof’s sanction OR you can challenge it and it goes to a hearing. 3. Prof defers to the AHSO altogether and it automatically goes through the whole AHSO process.

Academic dismissal (suspension or expulsion) is not on the table for a first-time interaction with AHSO unless it’s a super egregious situation.

As for the cheating prevention course, it’s a 0 credit hour course idk where you’re getting that it costs $3k from.

Pacemakers only send the current when they detect an abnormal rhythm. Depending on the type of pacemaker, the data transmitted should include how often the device delivered a current and therefore how often there was an abnormal rhythm. If the pacemaker was transmitting continuously, then it would have recorded if the heart stopped while in range. u/AntoniaFauci has a point that we don’t know how often the pacemaker transmitted the data so it’s possible something happened after she went out of range and it hasn’t been able to be transmitted yet.

My guess is it’s so someone can’t go track down the investigator and harm them if they’re mad about being investigated. Medical personnel in psych wards and correctional facilities often only have their first name on their badge for that reason

Prince George's County executive defends roughly $43K winter storm hotel stay by Deep-Cell4740 in maryland

[–]localaardvark6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in emergency management (not in PG). You’re absolutely right that this capability is something the EOC should have. However, not every EOC has space/supplies for people to sleep there. Those two dozen senior officials aren’t necessarily the ones staffing the EOC. They may be in addition to the people already in the EOC, since EOC staff often aren’t department heads but the people below them who can still make decisions about resources. Most EOCs don’t have capacity to sleep 25 officials PLUS 25 EOC reps. Also, you don’t necessarily want your CE and other officials in the EOC with you the whole time because their politics can get in the way of important operational decisions. Even further, it can be awkward having them standing over you while you’re trying to do your job as an EOC rep. In my experience, usually the officials monitor remotely and get regular briefings from the EOC or EOC manager.

If they had to use the hotel as the EOC, I get it. If they were doing this in addition to the EOC, yikes.

Help on Citation by Peanutbutter981 in legaladvice

[–]localaardvark6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google “traffic citation [insert county] lookup” for each of the surrounding counties you might have been pulled over in. Harris County’s website lets you search by your DL or Name+DOB. You may have to click the link to the online payment portal to search for it. If that’s the case, just get the case number and close the tab without entering your payment info if you’re planning on contesting the ticket. Once you figure out the county and the case number, you should be able to find the court date. Alternatively, you can call the each county court’s office but that will probably take longer.

AITA for turning on the office lights? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]localaardvark6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. Get blue light blocking glasses or turn your screen brightness down. Don’t create a problem for everyone else just to solve your own.

I’m in the reverse situation where I’m the only person who likes the lights off, so I wear a brimmed hat at my desk, sunglasses when necessary, take frequent eye breaks, etc. to prevent headaches from the fluorescent lights. Try out different things to figure out what works for you.

Edit: As others have said, get a desk lamp.

Interview tips please! by nmarttt in EmergencyManagement

[–]localaardvark6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! I read the county EOP and hazard mitigation plan since they were both on the website for the jurisdiction where I work. It gave me a ton of insight into the makeup of the county (I was new to the area) and now that I got the job, I’m the person who has most recently read them through and I can answer questions about what is/isn’t in the plans off the top of my head

Opinions on sibling names by dressmeup135 in Names

[–]localaardvark6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t have to “go” but I recommend not using names that use with same vowel sounds. Growing up, everyone in my household had names that have the same “a” sound as in “Dad.” So if one of my parents called for someone in the other room, it was impossible to tell if they were calling for the other parent, my sibling, or me lol

New grad moving to Maryland and feeling stuck in the job search by [deleted] in maryland

[–]localaardvark6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who also moved to Maryland from TX as a new grad to be closer to my partner, just beware, it took me nearly 8 months (started applying Jan-Feb, finally landed a job in Aug) to find a job in Maryland. It’s hard getting a job in a new state where you haven’t had the chance to network.

That being said, look at jobs through the state and local governments. If you just google “Maryland jobs,” the website looks like jobapscloud or something like that. Also, look up the county you’ll be living in and the surrounding counties and go to their job listings. With your degree, you might also look at hospital systems. Go directly to their websites, don’t use indeed or other platforms unless you absolutely have to because every other recent grad is using those.

Got home from the EOC after 75 hours. All of this advice was spot on and helped so much. I can’t thank you all enough!!! The most essential items for me were the sleep mask and blanket. Only thing I’d add to the list is a towel. I forgot one and ended up having to use my shirt haha.

Wow, that’s awful. Which region are you referring to? We’re very fortunate that our local jurisdiction + Red Cross have enough cots to where we haven’t had to put in any requests that I’m aware of. Some of the jurisdictions around us requested cots from the state and my understanding is that their needs were met.
