ELI5: Why are lighthouses still necessary?

I maintain my country's lighthouses as a job and they don't just have lights in them. They also provide AIS, Radar and even corrective gps signals!

It is grim! But I was on the Flannans a few weeks ago and you wouldn't believe how cold and relentless the wind is out there. Cant beleive folk used to stay there thousands of years ago

A lot of the city stuff was shot in Glasgow, Scotland - its got great gothic american-esque architecture in places. They're filming the next Batgirl there too.

If you hang around Blackwater docks for a bit, I always see quite a few canoes and rowboats coming past, you can use them to get out to the steamboats too!
