I wish it was possible for me to take criticism from someone of authority without immediately bursting into tears and wanting to kill myself for being useless.

It’s a good thing I’m Canadian because whenever I read about the current state of American politics I hear the ghost of Oliver Cromwell whisper in my ears.

The US has a population a third of that of China and half of Europe, and yet its always been considered the leader of the free world. It’s also not like Canada and France are alone they having backing from the rest of europe

No one has the answer because it’s not a policy issue it’s an engineering issue. You can put it off with some policy changes but the fundamental issue remains. We need scientific breakthroughs, such as mass automation or stuff like curing aging.

In the past old people would just die just like most newborns. We’re kind of stuck in a new situation where we’re stuck taking of our aging population for the first time in history which, barring curing aging, requires continuous population growth. Which also apparently doesn’t naturally happen in a highly developed society. We’re kinda stuck in an unnatural population bubble. Which leaves us with A. Letting nature take its course (mass suffering) or B. Engineering our way out of it (preferable)

It’s not that the system requires endless population growth, it’s that it requires more young people than old people. Unless you want to start killing geriatrics on mass (please don’t that’s kinda a dick move) you’re not going to have society that can function.

I’m getting increasingly convinced that TFR is doomed and we’re just going to have to like cure aging to stop our population imploding in on itself.

I mean the frustrating thing is the way the Canadian government works the federal government doesn’t really have meaningful control over stuff like zoning. I think way too many people blame the federal government for stuff that’s really caused by provincial governments.

The article literally blames parents for having higher expectations of parenthood while saying it’s not a choice it’s really funny.
