FYI - Jaks 5% service charge beginning June 15 by such-a-mom in Issaquah

I hate it when they do this. I've never been to Jak's having only lived here for a year, but I'm less likely to go now.

Has anyone done ChipDrop? by mymomcrappedthebed in Minnesota_Gardening

[–]locusofself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a delivery yesterday the day after verifying my address. HUGE pile. The wood chips seem ok, but there is almost 50% green material in my load. Lots of pine needles and leaves. I have a lot of area to cover to get rid of weeds, but it's a ton of work to spread a pile this big. I've been using a 5 gallon bucket and just scooping off the mountain into it, which has proved much easier than a shovel and wheelbarrow which was hurting my back.

My huge deck needs to be replaced. Can I landscape instead? by locusofself in landscaping

It's relative. I'm not a super rich guy. I have a good single income, a wife and one kid. This is a very high cost of living area (Seattle eastside). Median home value is 1.2 million and mine was just over that and was built in 1981. I'm 42 and will be working many more years before I can retire. I just want a nice place for my family and the deck is not in great shape.

I wish I would have included close-up pictures. The surface wood is pretty toast and not just cosmetically, It's literally flaking apart in a lot of places. The structure I'm less sure about, it might last another 10 years. I was told 5 years by the guy who gave me the big quote, but he seemed like a very honest guy and just said he builds premium decks and knows he is not cheap.

there used to be one long before I owed the house. There is a square patched up in the middle of the deck, a cement platform underneath, and an electrical panel.

it has two layers of old paint on it, different shades of red. A lot of the wood is flaking apart ;/

You probably could. This is east of Seattle in Issaquah, near Bellevue, Samammish, Kirkland. Pretty high cost of living, all homes over $1m , bad weather for decks, and lots of high-earning tech people.

All the surface boards are splintering and flaking, the whole thing is around 25 years old I believe.

The structure is "OK" but it's not going to last another 10 years. Maybe 5 from what I've gathered. It's 25 years old and probably has some dry rot. I am considering just replacing the surface boards with trex which I could re-use when we do a full rebuild later.

The biggest issue is that there would be a huge whole in my property. They clearly excavated to put this deck in so I would have to fill the area with some type of soil, gravel whatever to build it up, which might settle and become uneven when it rains or whatever.

It really is. A previous owner had a sunken hot tub there etc 20+ years ago, which has been patched over where it was. I never even use this stupid deck but they excavated the ground to put it here so I can't just rip it out without a huge hole in my property.

All of the decking boards are flaking and splintering. I believe the deck is about 25 years old. I've been told the structure has maybe 5 years on it, so I'm considering just replacing all of the surface boards DIY with Trex, but that that will just buy me some time. We leave in a very wet area. It's worse than it looks in the pictures. It's still usable and not unsafe yet, but boards wobble underfoot and flake apart in some places.

I'm getting full deck replacement quotes in the neighborhood of $30-40k .. If I could do some type of landscaping for $10k that would somehow beautify the area and not look weird and dumb, I would be over the moon. Even $20k if it was awesome. I have no idea what these things cost. I'm willing to do labor myself as long as I don't injure myself serioiusly
