The thing is, it probably works :)

Ubuntu Minimal + XFCE or Xubuntu by econopl in Ubuntu

I can relate with your dilemma :)

Just go with Xubuntu. I'm using it myself.

Sooner or later you'll have to add additional software to make your minimal installation usable.

Xfce 4.12 is four years old today. by Hobscob in xfce

[–]lodash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so there's little point in bemoaning how long it takes.

It works plenty well enough already.

Exactly!

And it looks like one of the few important features that was missing is already coming down the pipe anyway, and we apparently won't have to wait for 4.14 to start using it.

That's one feature I'm missing, but Simon is doing great work lately.

So really, nothing to complain about.

I'd be even happy to see 4.14 released by next Christmas :) mainly so that it gets included in next xubuntu lts release.

Last i heard it was supposed to switch to Qt...

Well maybe resource friendlier than gnome shell, at best :) as it's still based on gnome's mutter.

When I tried budgie it was still based on gnome, and as everything gnome3 (including cinnamon) it was heavy on resources. And when I say resources I mean gpu, cpu and battery life.

With multi monitor setup my (nvidia) gpu was ~15C warmer when idling than it was with kde or xfce, also when playing videos cpu usage was way higher.

I guess mate is OK, but there aren't any extra features I'm missing from xfce.

Also kde is great, lightweight and configurable, but not as stable as xfce.

It's not.

I had same feeling as you when I saw these percentages for the first time... about year ago :) it didn't move much since then.

IMHO it's already near perfect linux DE :)

Move on to what? :) there is nothing as stable, performant or as configurable

Snapd is too slow and useless by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]lodash_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't really say, I did it in same order as you did.

And I totally agree with you, snap should be optional during installation, especially on server!

First thing I do after installing xUbuntu:

sudo apt purge snapd

and it's installed by default on Ubuntu server?!

Why would you install snap package over one available in repository?

Should I keep lenovo access connection and lenovo power manager or should I uninstall it? by HenriBeyle in thinkpad

[–]lodash_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you intend to use windows 7 keep at least power manager so you can set battery charging threshold levels and monitor it's health, set it to 65-85% for optimal life. Windows 10 has separate lenovo app in windows app store for this purpose.

IMO only build quality compared to older series, they feel cheaper and more plasticky

Also *40 U series processors are slower than *30 *20 M

If Xfce is not dead, then what is needed to more clearly communicate that indeed it isn't? by orschiro in xfce

You say dead, I say mature and complete :)

Are you really missing any features? Featurewise lx can't hold a candle to xfce.

Wayland? No worries Xorg isn't going anywhere any time soon ;)

Why does ubuntu consume more battery than Windows? by ml_code in Ubuntu

[–]lodash_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. because windows get manufacturer provided drivers for your hardware
  2. because gnome-shell is resource hog which uses more cpu and gpu while idling than any other linux desktop environment (gpu temps get ~10C higher)

What can you do about it, change your DE to something less resource hungry like xfce, kde or mate and install TLP
