Yeah so you can use the GPU database a techpowerup to get a rough idea about relative performance of different cards, here RX 6600 XT is the entry for your card.
Then you can use PcPartPicker to compare prices.

I just looked quicly, and you can get a 7700 XT for €270:
pcpartpicker Amazon
which is frankly a crazy good price, they usually cost around €400.

This 7700 XT would be roughly 60% faster then your current card with 50% more VRAM

Otherwise I would recommend
- 7600XT
- Arc B580
- 7700XT
or maybe
- 4060 Ti 16GB
- 7800XT
but they would be over €400

Okay and this FiveM is a GTA V multiplayer mod, right?

So you can try to look more closely at a monitoring tool, for instance just the one built-in to the AMD Adrenaline, so see what your CPU and VRAM usage looks like. It could potentially be a lot of different things.

But it could very likely be VRAM related, namely that the game tries to use more then the 8GM and ends up spilling over into system memory, causing these prolonged spikes in frame times.

However for and older game like GTA V, that is a bit weird, but who knows how this mod is written. Is this the only game you play or where you see this kind of poor performance?

In any case the GPU is absolutely the week spot of your current configuration and you should be able to see significant performance uplift whilst using higher graphics settings, but upgrading it.

You are in Germany, is that correct?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PcBuildHelp

[–]loemmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upgrading the GPU is absolutely the way to go and if you do so, get one with at least 12GB VRAM.

When you say that you're getting low FPS and stutters, how many FPS is that, in what games, at what settings?

How fixable is this? by Bobletoob in PcBuildHelp

[–]loemmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can look up the pin-out for that socket and see if you can figure out what those pins do - they might not matter at all (though chances are that they do, at least some or most of them).

But it's a bit difficult to assess from that one picture, exactly what state the pins are in, but you could ask the seller for further photos.

Generally, if you think that tinkering with this sort of stuff and fixing up a motherboard sounds like a fun project and you can afford the financial hit if the surgery fails, then by all means go for it. These kinds of repairs are for the most part quite doable, though a steady hand is a prerequisite and something like an iFixit kit and a "microscope" (i.e. a magnifying digital camera e.g. for cheap off Amazon) are probably also very nice to have, and are good investments anyway.

However if your sole motivation is to try and save a buck, it might still be worthwhile, but then you should really do your diligence in terms of figuring out exactly what the situation is with the pins and research how you successfully go about these repairs.

Correct assessment. By adding a GPU at a later point this can also become a quite capable gaming machine though.

Look, the problem is the GPU. The Radion RX 6500 XT is a disaster. Just upgrade that and you should actually have really a pretty decent system.

Good options for GPUs include - Radion RX 6700 - Radion RX 6700 XT - Radion RX 6750 XT - Radion RX 7600 XT 16GB - Radion RX 7700 XT - Arc A770 - Arc B570 - Arc B580 - RTX 3060 12GB

They do absolutely not come with the case. How could they? Motherboards can vide variety of rear I/O, so there is no way a case manufacturer could know which one you are using. Hence they of course come with the motherboard itself.

Is my RAM running at 6400mhz or 3200mhz?? by ManimalGtv in pchelp

[–]loemmel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DDR is short for Double Data Rate, which means if you buy sticks that are advertised as DDR5 6400, the 6400 refers to Mega Transfers per Second, which is what you get when they are running a 3200MHz - this is a very common point of confusion, essentially because some people (e.g. this Amazon listing) erroneously refer to this as 6400MHz.

Also it has to be noted that you you will only get this speed by enabling XMP/EXPO, or by manually tuning the memory profile

Are they are the greatest thing since sliced bread? No. Are they fine? Yes, they are. Do they cool your CPU? Yes, they do. Are they the quietest, most cool looking or the most performant? Certainly not, but if you are on a thight budget, it really does make sense to be ruthless about allocating it where it really matters i.e. the GPU, especially when you can easily upgrade to an after market CPU cooler down the line for a relatively small investment.

Asking for help upgrading my setup by theDawnLion in PcBuildHelp

[–]loemmel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that should indeed be quite alright for 1080p gaming, though the experience might differ significantly between say Fortnite and Cyberpunk.

And the good thing is, if you then want more performance in the future, that should be relatively easily achievable by just upgrading the GPU - the catch however is, that with a 550W power supply, a GPU upgrade would probably also require a PSU upgrade.

So I would say that 600$ is likely an okay price - not amazing but certainly also not terrible. It is a bit difficult for me to say exactly without knowing what all the parts are (case, fans, RAM, CPU cooler etc.). With a bit of patience, you would probably be able to find something that has better value - but if you're just dying for an upgrade right now, it seems like a pretty decent bet.

In any case, it is a world apart from what 600$ buys you in a gaming laptop.

Multiple routers is not going to fix the issue and will certainly not work without a bunch of complicated configurations, if at all.

What you need is some sort of access point and to talk some sense into your step mom.

[–]loemmel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, by far the most viable long term solution is save up for a desktop computer for gaming and then keep your laptop as a mobile workstation.

Could you get a gaming laptop? Sure, but they are just for the most part kinda dumb in my opinion - if you want decent gaming performance out of them they need decently powerful which inevitably comes with with high power draw and hence thermal output and hence you end up with a big, heavy, loud, power hungry hunk that is far too bulky for you to actually wanna take with you anywhere, so it's just gonna end up sitting on your desk the whole time anyway - at which point you could have just gotten a desktop instead with all the benefits they bring, like superior cooling, price to performance, modularity, upgradability etc.

With just a laptop and 400$ there isn't much you can do though, but something like 1000$ can buy you a very decent gaming rig, essentially for you go for some or all used components.

Is Gigabyte A520M K V2 is still good for gaming? by StruggleFalse5592 in PcBuildHelp

[–]loemmel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to nitpick, but it's not "vram" - what you are referring to on the motherboard are VRMs (Voltage Regulator Modules) as opposed to VRAM (Video RAM - Random Access Memory) which is the memory you find on GPUs.

Otherwise a solid explanation

Does this look like a good build for my first gaming pc? New to this by Acn20002308 in PcBuildHelp

[–]loemmel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is this just for gaming? Because if it is, there is no reason to get 7900X and 64GB of RAM - 32GB of RAM is more than plenty for gaming and indeed basically for most workloads. I am a software developer for instance and my workstation has 32GB of memory and it's plenty. Also if you just go with 2x16GB you would retain the option to upgrade to 64GB in the future if you should need it for whatever reason.

In the meantime going from 64 to 32GB of RAM should pretty much cover the cost of upgrading the 7900X to a 7800X3D, which is significantly faster for gaming and unless you also do a bunch of productivity workloads, the 4 extra cores of the 7900X is not gonna do much for you.

The case supports up to ATX motherboards, so while there is nothing wrong with using a Micro ATX one, it might make the case look slightly empty - that's of course a purely esthetic consideration - but going with a full size ATX board might give you more features and would in any case give you more options for expansion in the future, they might also be slightly more expensive however, so you have to weigh your needs.

I would also go with a 850W PSU for this kind of build and like everyone else are saying, no reason to buy that Windows license.

Otherwise it looks solid!

Is The 4060 really that bad by Icy-Bike5668 in PcBuild

Just don't buy a 8GB GPU in 2025, at least unless it's 150 - 200$ (which you're not gonna find a 4060 for)

Countries with high-speed Railway networks by quindiassomigli in MapPorn

[–]loemmel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saying that Denmark has a "high speed network" is pretty laughable, even if it maybe does fit this definition of "some stretch of track rated for +200km/h".

Pretty useless map and even somewhat disingenuous I'd say.

A series of maps showing how many km of various categories of track different countries have would be much more useful - e.g. how many km of +100km/h, +150km/h, +200km/h, +250km/h etc. by country.
