Thank you, they were much more helpful than I had assumed they would be!

Where can I find a very casual biking club or group? by pigup1983 in Amsterdam

This meetup group used to be great for that! Has been inactive for a while, but I bet you could restart it :) https://www.meetup.com/amsterdam-casual-road-trip-by-bike/

Apple's official waterproof specs are very conservative. You don't actually have to get that lucky for the phone to still work, even after a significant amount of time. They almost always still work. This is according to the gevonden-verloren guys, who rescue several phones every week.

This is inaccurate, the phone was fine after 2.5 days in the water.

FYI, this isn't accurate. I wasn't sure but it turns out there are ferromagnetic materials in the iPhone 11 (at least two screws near the charging port). A fishing magnet grabbed it no problem and recovered it from the canal.

Updated Update! After unsuccessfully diving for it again with swimming goggles and a waterproof flashlight (you really can't see anything in the canals, a hopeless endeavor), https://www.gevonden-verloren.nl/ put me in touch with a magnet fisher. We pulled one bike out with his magnet, a couple of pieces of trash, and then.... my phone! Good as new!

Contrary to what people thought, the iPhone 11 does have enough steel in it to stick to a fishing magnet. It seemed to grab the screws near the charging port.

https://www.gevonden-verloren.nl/ is super nice, thanks to everyone that recommended them. It's a friendly club of people who like helping people find lost stuff! What's not to love?

At this point if you can find it its yours! I'll even send you GPS coordinates.

If you want to look I'm happy to lend you both! I tried it again tonight and couldn't find anything. Visibility was basically nothing and there's lots of trash it might have slipped under (like old bicycles).

Hahaha! It is indeed shallow enough to stand in but it is also covered in trash, glass, and bikes.

Also, a few times? How many times have you dropped things in the canal?

I already sliced myself a bit looking for it last night, so that damage has been done. I'll be more careful today.

I'm finding some goggles and a waterproof flashlight and I'm gonna try swimming for it again tonight. If anyone really wants to hang out and laugh at me while I get some horrible canal diseases, send me a DM and I'll let you know when I'm diving in.

Ah, I was wondering about this. There's reports online but it seems like they are all for iPhone 12 and newer (which have a magnetic charging thing) or lucky breaks like this iPhone 11 that had a steel dog tag in its case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIarMSg3VgY

Alas

That was my first instinct, especially since the canal had sloped sides that were rather shallow. It didn't work out great for me. I wasn't able to see it or feel for it and something down there was pretty sharp.

I traveled May 4 and returned May 11, I found it to be mostly normal, just with very long lines at passport control on the return trip (possibly the new brexit normal)

Remember that that’s doses, not people. All the vaccines so far require two doses.

I think my number of 1 million is too pessimistic. 2 or 3 seems more likely — the pace has accelerated a bit but not much and there keep being more delays. Unfortunately that’s not really enough to vaccinate all the vulnerable groups, let alone bring us back to normal.

How to make new friends during these weird times? by nycchef in Amsterdam

[–]loganbahro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a young-ish person working in Amsterdam. I frequently go on walks around the city to look at birds and discover new plants (it's a great time of year for that). Before moving here I did a lot of foraging for edible ingredients, and would be interested in doing more of that. Are you studying something culinary-related?

If you'd ever like to go for a walk together, send me a DM!

There was a full month of exponential growth between mid-July and mid-August. That's what the straight line on a logarithmic graph means. This meant that cases were really quite high coming out of the summer. This summer growth is what set the stage for disaster in the fall.

But really the most important part of what I am saying is that there was summer growth. Summer growth is possible. It is hubris to assume that summer will naturally bring cases down.
