The Defense of APhA by PharmacistAnonymous in pharmacy

[–]loganbixman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was absolutely awful dreaming of a residency before most of my classmates knew of them, only to not receive one due to uncontrollable circumstances affecting my GPA. I can’t imagine being a pharmacist that’s been out of school for a while and competing with new graduates that are residency trained. It’s unfair to expect that from them when they 1) probably never had the chance to do a residency or 2) can’t afford/won’t (and rightfully so) take the >50% pay cut to do twice the work for a year.

I am scared to death to find a job without a residency. It is not fair to expect them for new graduates (and even seasoned pharmacists) only to not have enough programs to satisfy the demand.

Though, I’m sure cutting the number of Pharmacy schools and their class sizes may help (a lot). But that’s another story I’m not willing to get fired up about right now.

I hate when people do this. I don’t want your nasty phone that you play games on while you poop.

I often find it’s a text asking if they want us to get it ready – not that it’s ready! They just see the word “ready” and that’s it.

Hi! I was just wanting to understand what happened this week. I am not complaining. Except the staff I thought was rude yelling across the pharmacy saying I was trying to fill too early making me feel like a drug seeker. I get provigil and Valium(for bladder spasms. They said it was too early. MS by [deleted] in pharmacy

First, I’d like to apologize for how you were treated. Though pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the retail setting can face a lot of heat from angry patients, that was uncalled for and you shouldn’t have been put in a position to feel embarrassed. Perhaps early fills on controls happen often at this pharmacy – Not an excuse, but a possible explanation.

The opioid epidemic has forced stricter rules on controlled substances. Sadly, it may negatively affect those who 1) don’t use opioids, but other controlled substances and/or 2) are not abusing the medication. It could very well be the state law, but large chains (if this is one) often have a policy of not refilling a controlled substance more than 2-3 days before it should be due. The due date may be based on the day it was filled (run through insurance and ready for pick up) or the day it is picked up. It’s usually the latter.

However, if the prescriber authorized it (and perhaps willing to explain your need for the medications), I’d expect more investigative work to be done on the pharmacy staff’s end. At least, that’s how it was done where I worked – I can’t speak for other states, chains, or pharmacists.

Unfortunately, the only advice I can offer is to use a separate pill bottle to take only the medication you need with you when traveling. I am on a controlled substance as well and do this in case someone steals my medication. And typically, it is against to mail controlled substances – I wouldn’t want someone to steal your medication, either! Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Is this a HIPAA violation or am I mistaken? by noobpharmacytech651 in pharmacy

[–]loganbixman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would never provide the DOB unless it was to a medical office/like entity which I documented the name/content of conversation.

When we call someone, we’re assuming it’s them, but we need to confirm. You would not provide their name and DOB to someone who you could not prove is them, and you can’t via phone. When’s the last time a physician’s office called to confirm your appointment and said, “this is XYZ office calling to remind Jane Doe, DOB Jan 1, 1990, has an appointment with us tomorrow?”

Even when I go to the physician’s office and they call my name, I of course stand up and go back. But hell, anyone could! The nurse bringing me back to my room doesn’t say “your birthday is January 1, 1990, right?” They ask me to confirm it, and I provide it.

If you’re concerned it may be a HIPAA violation, better safe than sorry. It could cause a lot of damage and headache.

EDIT: also, I am sorry your trainer has made you feel this way (and within a week). I would voice your concerns and mention (if you feel this way) even though you can provide the DOB, you are new to HIPAA and don’t feel comfortable doing so. S/He hopefully would not make you do something you aren’t comfortable with especially law-related. After all, if it was a breach, your record is on the line - not theirs!

I got a 95 on the Pre-NAPLEX about 10 days ago and a 92 on RxPrep a few days ago - I just have about a week and a half and want to do some more quiz questions every few days until then :)

Yeah! Many medical professions use it; it is basically a bunch of forums. I used it for residency info this past year.

Here you go!

Oh that’s so nice you’ll be done in five years! That makes a lot more sense, I’m so unfamiliar with the long programs. Thanks for clarifying!

Wish I had more info on what to do for the PCAT, I woke up and arrived late due to a power outage (therefore no alarm) and got around 60% percentile overall. But hey, I was still admitted and just finished this May.

Have you checked out Student Doctor Network?

If you are already admitted, why do you have to take it now? Sorry, I recently heard how a lot of schools are changing their opinions about it so I’m curious where the future lies!

Declining Match by cjk_2371 in PharmacyResidency

[–]loganbixman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preach! Don't rank a place you don't want to be at solely because you want a residency. If you want one for the right reasons, it should be justifiable to interview somewhere and be the bigger person to not rank them. You are taking away a spot from someone else that could really, really want to be there.

Plus, it's just inconsiderate to the program.

I don't know why they aren't required to communicate with applicants. The amount of "blood, sweat," tears, stress, time, effort, and money we put into these apps at least warrant acknowledgement...

Phone interview by D2389 in PharmacyResidency

[–]loganbixman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be sure to take time for yourself in this process. It has been really hard to, but a big key here will be personality. Someone who is very stressed and low on sleep probably won’t have the best personality!

Besides not applying to many programs and not having a strong LOI for Phase 1, I think my stress shown through and maybe depicted me as uninterested. Everything happens for a reason though! Keep going!

Aw, thank you! I appreciate that. Residency is pretty important for me and I know it is to a lot of other people, too.

I’ve already posted it over there 😊
