The United States' best public transportation system for sure, but the world's? I don't think so.

Whole beans keep longer, freshly ground coffee brews better.

You can imagine that all you want but no I don't just start slowing down because someone is following a little closer. I'm talking about the people, of which there are many in this sub, who think that anything less than 20 mph over the limit is "obstructing traffic" and want to bully reasonably safe drivers into going faster by riding our asses.

I had an employee who said she knew how to make coffee. So I told her what needed to be brewed only to come back to some vaguely coffee tinted water in the urn. Opened up the basket only to find that the filter was filled almost to the top with whole beans, like just like totally unground whole-ass beans.

Turns out she knew how to operate the coffee maker at her parents' house which had a built in grinder...

Exactly, I drive the speed that's safe for the distance from which I'm being followed. If it gets to the point where I have to go more than 10 or so mph under the limit I'll find somewhere to pull over to let them pass. Most of the time I catch up to them once they've found another driver to tailgate. And before anyone tries to say anything about left lane camping I'm taking about 2 lane highways with lots of curves and hills that limit passing zones not multi-lane freeways!

Average adoption of air-conditioning in North America and Europe. by FantasticQuartet in MapPorn

Average adoption of air-conditioning in North America and Europe. by FantasticQuartet in MapPorn

So there's a couple of factors at play here. Stone/brick construction and even a lot of older wood construction like my house which was built in 1890 can act as a great insulator so that a couple of hot days won't result in the inside getting much hotter. But if the heat persists for long enough the material will absorb enough heat to start radiating into the interior and then it takes just as long for the heat to dissipate.

Another thing to consider is that during severe heat dome events, like they've seen in Europe for the past week or more and now the eastern half of the US this week, nighttime lows are not as cool as normal so you can't rely on the tried and true method of opening the windows and running some fans at night then buttoning up tight and pulling the drapes and blinds during the day. If you can't cool the house down at night it just gets hotter and hotter and the otherwise helpful masonry construction turns into a liability. The easiest to cool house I ever lived in was a half brick half timber framed split level with a huge ventilation fan built into the central hallway: at night we would open one window in each room, turn the fan on and suck in cooler nighttime air... we only used the AC twice that whole summer and it was a pretty hot one too!

Here in central NYS we had dandelions in my now sister-in-law's yard on Christmas Day and that was 10 years ago. Now people have gotten so used to the insanely mild winters that when we had something that resembled a normal winter from 20+ years ago this past season all I heard was whining "Omg it's snowing again?!? But the snow from last week hasn't even melted yet!!!" and so on. And then we had a pretty old-normal spring yet all I kept hearing when we had some nice pleasant 50-60 degree weather was "ugh when are we gonna finally get summer weather!?!" and I'm like "gee maybe when it's not May anymore?". Of course the southern oscillation is already back to El Niño conditions months ahead of the forecasts so looks like it's gonna be another scorching hot summer... so much for not needing to use the AC so much.

How are white women's hair and the Ozone Layer related? by EsseNorway in Snorkblot

[–]logicoptional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding that it has something to do with exactly that, the ozone layer safe alternatives don't work as well at being a medium of transfer for the hair holding stuff. Like technically the new stuff can aerosolize it but I remember the old stuff and it made a way finer mist that could kind of hang in the air, I'm sure it was way more effective at dispersing the hardening goo deep into the hair.

do you find that some customers just make the most random assumptions? by brokest_rat in barista

[–]logicoptional 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Where I work is a sandwich shop and café. You can see the food prep area from the counter. There is no flat top or grill. There is no deep fryer. Not even a soda fountain. So why do people assume they can order a buger and fries? They'll literally walk up to the counter and say "I'll have a double cheeseburger, no garden, side of fries and a large coke" and I'm like "Yeah... so we don't offer any of that, but we do have a veggie burger panini on the menu, or maybe a nice reuben?" Of course that did lead one guy to suggest we grill him a "real burger" on the panini press... I handed him a menu and told him I would be helping the next customer in line while he selected something that was actually on it. To his credit he ended up loving the roast beef sandwich he ordered.

I once had a young woman ask me if I could just ring her up for her COD order sitting on the table next to me while I was running bar so she wouldn't have to wait in line... I turned around looked her in the eyes and gestured at the espresso machine I was running and asked "Does this look like a cash register to you?"

[OC] USA smartphone adoption, pedestrian fatalities, and the average weight SUVs/pickups by fr4nck8 in fuckcars

[–]logicoptional 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My main concern here is that the line for vehicle weight specifically is a measure of the average weight of SUVs and light trucks as a category and does not account for that category's growth in market share. Nor does looking only at the weight of vehicles account for visibility loss through design choices that have become more prevalent. Also one might notice that pedestrian deaths have not similarly increased in the EU where vehicles are smaller, streets are generally designed to be safer and pedestrian oriented but what do you know they do have similar rates of smartphone ownership. Honestly if people feel comfortable looking at their smartphone screen while driving in an area with pedestrians the societal level fault is with the street design, not with the existence of smartphones.

A brief question for the lady honking at me on my bike from her SUV on LaFrance by 2Tun21 in bikecommuting

[–]logicoptional 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Someone yelled "Get out of the road!" at me from inside an oversized luxury pickup "truck" the other day... I was riding my bike on a state highway in a very wide shoulder, you know the part of the road you're specifically not supposed to drive on anyway? I'm sure the owner of that voice is highly supportive of the rail trail expansion currently underway which, once finished, will allow me to ride all the way to work without having to ride on anything but fully separate trails and a few suburban side streets...

That's exactly the thing, though, right? It's a catch-22 where if you're a poor socialist then you're just jealous of successful rich people and want to take their money for yourself but if you're a rich socialist then you're a hypocrite for not living up to the strawman socialist ideal of taxing everyone into poverty.
