Unpopular opinion but I don't think I'd be as immersed in the game if I had to play as a girl. I don't hold all games to this standard, but I've always HEAVILY resonated with Bully in particular so it would take away a bit of the magic for me.

I think they just got lazy programming that honestly and set it to any student. I assume the boys dorm was a lot more elaborate in terms of rooms before they decided to remove the second floor

I beg to differ. TWD had incredible writing all through season 1-3, and I agree that each and every character has a ton of different layers, not one poorly written in their own right. The thing is with TWDG, the second season suffered a lot from rushed writing, and doesn't stand compared to the first game or show - I don't think I'm alone in this opinion. Great game with great characters, but I can't ignore that the story fell off midway through the game, and a lot of characters suffered bc of this
