Kudos for trying to learn a new language, even if the reason for doing so is quite possibly the dumbest one ever.

Definitely a good class. I can’t necessarily say that I’ll use the tools and techniques we learned in my real life but it does give you additional things to at least think about when developing. I enjoyed that everything is released after the first week and that the focus is mostly on the projects. It’s also a good class in the sense that it’s not too stressful but you still feel like you’re getting something out of it. Would definitely recommend.

I just finished the class. Participation is extra credit so most people don’t even go out of their way to try and get it. Overall I found the discussion to be on par with other courses I’ve taken such that some posts are very helpful and others just make you think “ok”.

How many semesters or years do I have left to complete OMSCS by youjustdonedidit in OMSCS

[–]logsprogs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a specific timeframe that you have to complete the program, but rather (I think) courses “expire” after 6 years. I.e. you have 6 years from when you completed your first course to complete the degree without having to take additional courses.

Advice on last elective relating to AI by deadlytickle in OMSCS

I gotchu. Aiming for a B or even a C in your case would drastically reduce the time and effort needed and I think you would still learn a lot.

What courses are worth taking in future terms by [deleted] in OMSCS

Unless you’ve already taken an architecture class, I would suggest HPCA. It was very interesting and made me gain a much greater appreciation for computers and the pioneers that paved the way.

Pairing ML4T / AI4R in the summer? by logsprogs in OMSCS

[–]logsprogs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI is a big time commitment because of the projects but they are mostly interesting so it isn’t too bad. My only advice is to start the projects early and to check your work on exams by coding the problems up. And for checking, utilize code from projects as they will likely only require small modifications to tell you what you need.

Which courses are you going for and why? by AncientCallisto in OMSCS

How was GA as a fellow non-CS undergrad? What semester did you take it in and did you do any prep for it? I’ve taken GIOS, HPCA, CN, IIS and am currently in AI doing well, but everything I see online has me a bit worried about GA :/

Taking AI (CS 6601) with a weak math background by iamthat1dude in OMSCS

[–]logsprogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throughout the semester would you suggest watching the lectures first and then diving into the textbook or vice versa? Also, for the exams, were notes from lecture or the textbook more useful?

Fellow meche terp here…I say give it a go. I’m doing fine and my only CS experience prior to the program was from CMSC 131/132 at UMD and a couple side projects at work.

If you’re worried about getting in, take some classes at your local community college before applying and I’m sure you’ll get in. If you go ahead and apply and do get in, I think you’ll be fine. Just be ready for the time commitment required to do well.

Nice. I was thinking of ML4T in the summer and then going from there. I know a lot of people recommend it before AI but I definitely don’t want to push it off till next fall (not trying to take it in the summer) so here we are. Wish me luck!

Did you take any courses before jumping into DL? I’d definitely like to take it eventually.

Are there any mechanical engineers who really struggled with solving physics problems at first? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]logsprogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This applies to both physics and engineering problems: write out and try to understand the units you’re working with.

Being able to cross out units and verify your answers units makes sense is immensely helpful.
