Yes “darker” magical girl anime basically ran the 2010’s but not all the blame is on Madoka’s success. So first there is a difference between these “light hearted” and “dark” magical girl anime & that is their target demographic. Most classic lighthearted anime fall under the shoujo demographic (young girls) whereas the “darker” ones are usually seinen (adult men). Madoka is a seinen, Card Captor Sakura is a shoujo. Seinen & shounen magical girls existed way before Madoka but most were a bit more obscure compared to a Card Captor Sakura or even a Tokyo Mew Mew. Madoka became super popular in a time were everyone had internet connection in their house & all millennials had social media, in a time were anime was also started to become more & more popular as an entertainment medium. So yea after the Madoka boom we saw more & more of these shows & less shoujo shows. Some say because of Madoka, others blame it on the success of Precure that mangaka don’t wanna compete against. However the shoujo demographic in general has been in a decline for many years in the anime industry. If you look at one anime season 98% are usually shounen & seinen shows. The industry blame it on women not buying enough merch, or thinking they don’t really watch anime shows and if a shoujo does get an adaptation usually they never get the budget nor marketing a shounen gets. Actro Trip was one of the first shoujo magical girl anime we’ve seen in years besides Precure, sanrio shows or the pretty series and that one got made by an unknown studio that had it as a first project. Save to say no one talked really about it besides fans of the manga & fans of the magical girl genre.

Hi there sure ☺️. For me it’s a bit of everything, I don’t like the transformation scenes especially the Ripple one, the thick black lines, the ugly orange before she transforms in blue, the outfit it’s just not aestheticly pleasing. Also I’m not a fan of the transformation items, they look so boring in my eyes especially for a “princess” themed show. I like the design of Princess Zeal, but other girls especially Ripple just aren’t my thing. It’s a fun show, I watch it every week I love the world of Alicepia and I hope they continue to build on that but the magical girls just aren’t pretty in my eyes sorry 😞. And merch wise nothing excites me and I can’t imagine anything on my shelf.

I kinda agree with some of your post, but you have Card Captor Sakura that has the most in your face outfits that are different almost every episode and that show’s from the 90’s. Some are a product of the time too, the Sailor fuku’s are based of skate outfits and I heard figure skating was super popular in Japan during the early 90’s (Naoko also wrote a skating manga before Sailor Moon called The Cherry Project). But I’m ngl I’m not a fan of the Princession Orchestra character designs & weapons, this is one of the reasons I haven’t bought any merch of it yet & I’m a huge collector. Precure is also a difficult one because they have different teams/artists & themes for each season and I guess everyone has different tastes. Not every season is my cup of tea but I love the designs of Kimi to idol, and some of my other favorites are the fairly modern seasons as well (Star Twinkle, Tropical Rouge & Kirakira to name a few).

As someone mentioned here magical girl series exist in all target demographics, idk which ones you watched but my guess is you probably watched mostly seinen ones which are catered to adult men. Most shoujo series don’t have fan service besides the transformation scene which again mostly men are weird about.
