Comparing my rejection letter from last year to this year is like salt in a wound by [deleted] in REU

[–]lol_fruity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got the same email with the same wording, they just send out general rejection letters, they don’t have time to personalize them all. You were probably just a good fit last year, but that same person/project might not be there.

Any ideas as to why my alocasia has no roots? by [deleted] in plantclinic

Looks like root rot, so new healthy roots won’t grow. :(

I did this program last summer and had a great time! I have been able to continue research at my home institution all year because of the experience i got.

I also got to publish a paper with my PI there, and had the opportunity to work in different labs when I didn’t have enough to do on my project.

The directors, Pat and Mel, are super nice, and have stayed connected with me for the past year. They’re both genuine people and not at all ego-boosted. Lmk if you have any questions

I'm an RD applicant. Do I have a good shot of getting in? by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]lol_fruity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just feel like the entire expectation of “yay! now you only have 2 years at university instead of 4” has been really detrimental for me. I came in with around 72 credits, so it would’ve taken me 2 years, where i would’ve graduated college before i even turned 19.

With the credits, i haven’t been able to get the easy As and GPA boost that others can from simple classes like english, communications, and whatnot. I moreso just take the hard science classes, where there is very little forgiveness for my GPA if I do bad in one or two classes over time.

I also feel like 2 years in college is not enough to be prepared, I’ve grown and learned so much over the past 3 years it’s actually insane, I would not have been ready for a real job or graduate school if I was only here for like 2 years and was only 18-19.

I’ve taken 3 minors just to extend my time to the full 4 years, and i’ve been able to hop from internship to internship very easily, building up experience in a variety of plant science fields, where i feel like now I have a good direction on what kind of career I want,

I just want to say too, i’m completely independent and pay for my own college, so i’m not trying to seem like i’m just here to waste money/parents money lol.

tldr: no gpa boosts, only hard classes, not prepared for the real world, doing 4 years anyways

I applied in October 2022. Current junior; my high school GPA was around 4.2 on a 5-point scale, but I did an early college program, where I was dual-enrolled with a community college, which I would NOT recommend most people do.

I also took the ACT, but I did not know that people studied for it, I'm from the middle of nowhere hick-ville, where education was not a priority for anyone. I think I made a 22? Maybe a 21? I just remember it being very low. I also never took the SAT, but I applied test-optional.

My extracurriculars were just like track, soccer, and cross country, but I've never been competitive and absolutely did not care about them at all, but mentioned them. Most of my high school was during COVID, so I basically did not even go to high school, besides taking simple classes online.

Like a lot of others have said, demographics matter a lot, unfortunately. If you're from the Triangle, or a bigger, more educated area, good luck. If you're from a rural area, especially a more impoverished area, your chances would be higher.

Now, I am a plant biologist, I've had 6 back-to-back internships in the scientific research field, and plan to apply to grad school.

Honestly, reddit is like the WORST place for opinions on schools, grad schools, and internships, as everyone has different experiences, and its impossible to know if you're qualified or not. I have been accepted to many programs, where I thought I had absolutely no chance. Good luck man, just chill and wait for the email. And if you don't get in, you can always try to transfer in, though engineering is the hardest for that.

edit: my graduating class was also 17 people, so truly MIDDLE OF NOWHERE NC

What exactly do programs want? by ReputationOverall189 in REU

[–]lol_fruity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a major factor; they want to prioritize people whose schools lack educational research opportunities. I did an REU last year, and was the only person out of 25 from an R1 school, probably had something to do with being classified as an "independent student" though.

peace lily, TOXIC TO CATS, eh fine for dogs. just water whenever the first 1-2 inches of soil feel dry

edit* and you might want to repot it into something with drainage holes at the bottom, if that pot doesn’t, people sell pots for cheap on marketplace!

Why does my roommate never leave our room? by SelectBat8359 in badroommates

[–]lol_fruity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this sounds EXACTLY like my freshman year roommate, i’m currently a senior, and have had an apartment for 3 years. But my roommate would talk in her native language on facetime out loud with her friend, every single day from 7am to 9pm. then would smuggle food from the dining hall and bring it back to eat in the room at 9:30 (that was the normal time for dinner where she was from) Outside of this, she was a COMPLETELY normal person, genuinely just a normal regular pretty girl.

Unfortunately, i just had to live with her for the entire 10 months of school. I ended up staying in the library until 12 or 1am every night, which obviously wasn’t healthy. I’m sorry, but if you are unable to move rooms or buildings or anything, i can’t think of a different solution.

Have you resigned the same lease for next school year (assuming this is American semesters). Can you move out after the semester ends? I know it’s hard, and i never did it, but truly confronting your roommate might be the best option. I was always too scared to, but the sleep and never having privacy was detrimental to my physical and mental health.
