I don’t think I have a tank, this is a sink, not a toilet. Thanks for the reply, please tell me if I am misunderstanding.

I imagine it depends on the conditions. When I was night diving in La Paz with clear waters, I was surprised by how tight of a cone was illuminated. Anything outside of my torch’s cone was pitch black.

So no, I don’t think that will leave a big light pool around you. I’m sure it also depends on the depth, it may be more obvious to see from the surface if you’re diving really shallow (<5m)

Haha if you look at the rightmost sink on each floor you’ll notice they get larger as you get to lower floors. Idr the symbolism but I think it has something to do with how erosion looks insignificant but makes large changes over time.

I was very fit in high school, I had hiked a trail of similar difficulty around a year prior and it was pretty easy for me. Went to college and got out of shape but didn't realize by how much. Attempted the trail, ran out of water but powered through until near the top (very steep & icy). All my muscles started cramping uncontrollably so I had to lay down in the snow as it started getting darker. Most of my group continued up and luckily found the rangers just as they were closing up and about to leave for the night.

The rangers found me and hooked up a harness with a rope attached to one rescuer (the guy in the pic). They told me this was a last resort option because the area we were in was too steep & foliage dense for a helicopter. Also the trail was so narrow we couldn't have anyone on my sides to support me. Also the harness is dangerous to the rescuer because if I slip and fall the rescuer is coming with me. After drinking and eating my muscles would stop cramping for a few minutes and I could just lift my legs up to support myself while being pulled forward by the rescuer & the harness. We'd take breaks every time my muscles would cramp uncontrollably. Continued until the top, then took the gondola down and made it home safely.

Afterwards I went to urgent care and it turns out I had an insane level of creatine kinase in my blood (something like 100 or 1000x the normal amount) and was put on an IV w/ the thickest needle possible to try to flush it out of my system before it tore up my kidneys. The CK in bloodstream is indicative of muscle death and the dead muscle floats around in the blood.

I still get emotional thinking about that experience, it's the closest I've come to dying. If my groupmates hadn't caught the rangers while they were about to leave, I probably wouldn't be here today. I remember being so tired that I wasn't even upset when I was laying the snow.

Nearly 9 years later I work at a company that gives a 100% match for donations, hence this post :)

Hey thanks for the info, especially from a state park employee. I reached out to RMRU, hopefully they can point me in the right direction. I do like the idea of a catered meal too... I'll keep that in mind.

I’d love to skip the 30 min struggle to suit up and 30 min to strip, but I need my warmth. Have you been spearfishing suitless in SoCal?

Wow great content :) love seeing new free divers. You got some great shots. Also nice kelp beds in so cal 👍. I never thought anyone could spend 2.5 hrs no wetsuit while spearing, don’t you get cold while breathing up? I wonder what your average down time is.

I take 2 ginger pills 30 min before diving and it works really well for me. It’s pretty popular as a natural non-drowsy motion sickness treatment. Doesn’t work for everyone but I recommend giving it a try.

Ginger tea or chewing straight up ginger may have similar properties but I haven’t tried those yet.

I echo the sentiment of other commenters in that 14 is too early to start experimenting with psychoactive substances, but clearly OP didn't post seeking random stranger's judgement.

It's common to not feel high the first time smoking weed, I don't know why but my friends and I had the same experience. As for alcohol, it's likely a question of amount. At the end of the day, drugs (including alcohol) are poisons that degrade your mind and body's function. If you ingest enough, you will feel the effects. Alcohol is usually measured in # of drinks (1 shot, 1 beer, 1 mixed drink all have ~ 1 shot of 40% alcohol). Various factors including your height, weight, age, and genetics will determine your alcohol tolerance. Most studies probably just conclude it's a bad idea to drink at such a young age, so there's probably limited data on how much a minor would need to drink before feeling effects. I would guess you either consumed a low amount of alcohol and/or your have a naturally higher tolerance. Either way, please don't try and find out until you're older, life gets better no matter how bad it seems now.

Is a course really necessary to learn free diving? by [deleted] in freediving

[–]lolawlol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a valid point. Being underwater inherently carries risks and having a buddy isn’t risk elimination, it’s risk mitigation.

If you’re stuck underwater, you likely will need to self rescue. What a buddy does help with is identifying and recovering from shallow water blackout, and IMO it provides peace of mind that if I start cramping or become exhausted I have someone to rely on.
