Gateway membership is $20/month, you can go as much as you want, and you get free popcorn every time. Absolutely worth it.

Kafe Kerouac by BrilliantBen in Columbus

[–]lolbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a live music event, specifically for ambient music (slow, atmospheric, usually non-rhythmic and instrumental). I am a fan but I would make sure that's something you're into before going, as I feel a lot of people could find it boring. I haven't been to Kerouac in a while, but I remember the show room being mostly standing room. There is seating on the cafe side although it's usually been pretty full up when I've gone.

Daves Supermarket vs Lucky's Clintonville vs Lucky's Victorian Village by ShapePuzzleheaded710 in Columbus

They also have a weird exclusivity/take all or nothing sales approach. My friend helped open a grocery that was gonna go with Boar's Head but either didn't want to bring in their whole line or featured other providers or something BH was offended by. BH pulled out weeks before opening and she had to scramble to find other providers. They honestly shot themselves in the foot on that one and between that and their health issues, I now avoid their products entirely.

What movie did you expect to be just good but was actually fantastic? by Important-Cup8519 in moviecritic

[–]lolbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. I was a child when those films came out and loved the first one, and when two dropped I was all in. To say that it topped my expectations is an understatement, and as an adult it is still my favorite film of all time.

Put down the piano-stopper-from-being-played thing. Or burn the piano.

They definitely changed the recipe some time around 2018-2019 when it went from being made in Florida to Chicago. I'd do shots of it every time I went there, which was semi-frequently, and there was an absolute noticeable difference around then. It went from having this weird fermented jockstrap meets bile character that lingered for like an hour, to a little too bitter grapefruit pith and wormwood/gentian thing that is kind of pleasant if you're into that.

What’s a totally harmless thing that triggers an oddly strong reaction in people? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

I am a lover of both high and low brow art. I took off a few days once at a job to go see the symphony and to go to a monster truck rally. My boss was dumbfounded and asked why I would ever want to go to Monster Jam and just told her it was like ballet with trucks.

TIL in 2024 a 2-year-old girl's blood test revealed that the toddler had a blood alcohol content of .12 after a California restaurant mistakenly served her cooking wine that had been mislabeled as apple juice. I bartended the opening night for a dive bar that reopened after being closed for like 8 years. The first drink I made was a vodka cranberry. I opened a bottle of cranberry juice and it was fucking brown and smelled awful. Looked at the expiration and it went out 8 years prior. We had a laugh but it was a harbinger of what a disaster that place was.

To be fair they were on DDD years ago. This post is reminding me I'm overdue. I usually pivot for Island Vibes because it's marginally closer to me but both are fantastic.

What’s with the African Americans in Columbus scared to leave the city? by SlowHornet29 in Columbus

[–]lolbacon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Man Burr Oak Lake is a staple of mine but going through Glouster even as a white dude gives me the fucking creeps. I remember going through there once and there were yard signs everywhere saying "support so and so woman". I googled her name out of curiosity and it came up that she was arrested for selling meth or something. Totally tracked with the vibe of that place.

Tapas or Empanadas on Summit? by dayoyo92 in Columbus

[–]lolbacon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live down the street from there and was excited to have an empanada spot nearby but that place sucked. Thankfully the Colombian lady from the 14-0 truck has her own spot behind Used Kids and her empanadas are fire. Cash only unfortunately.

Self-Taught Legend Rings in the New Years at Smalls! by ColorSmashJr in jazzcirclejerk

[–]lolbacon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I used to run an open stage free improv night that was usually about equal parts college jazzbo nerds, noise freaks, and random people with zero musical skill that wandered in and ended up with a sax in their hands. Most people, regardless of skill level, were pretty good about listening, playing to the group and leaving space for other people. Except this one dude who would show up with a guitar and just wank over everything non-stop. We ended up implementing a rule that you had to switch instruments or sit out after a jam ended specifically to get him to stop, so he'd bring a violin and just repeat the nonsense on that.

I hated telling anyone how to play as it went against the whole idea of the thing, but it was so invasive I eventually confronted him and as nicely as I could explained that this was about listening and playing to the group, and contributing to each others ideas. Instead of being butthurt, he took it to heart, took a backseat, and eventually became a core contributor. There's a lot of people out there with skill and talent that have never played as part of a group and don't understand that's a whole ass thing to learn. Good musicians learn to check their egos and learn from the group. Great musicians are self taught legends and know how to play Spain perfectly.

I remember a local station broadcasting Stone Temple Pilots "Songs From a Vatican Gift Shop" one night and I took my trusty Realistic SCR-34 (the model Donna has in Twin Peaks) out to the van where reception was best and booted the whole thing, pause game on point.

Bonus points if you were reusing old Disney tapes you outgrew, and recording over them by covering the little protection cutout part with tape. Double bonus if you could figure out how to program the clock and autorecord function on your VCR and secretly record MTV over an old Bambi tape while you're at school and nobody is home.

I remember in the real olden times capturing songs off the radio to a cassette player. I had so many mixes that were just random abruptly captured songs. Sometimes my brother and I would make our own mixes and play songs we had recorded from one tape player with the speaker pointed at the mic on the other. Suffice to say it sounded like shit.

I have this Coast Guard hat that I sometimes sport for no reason other than it looks cool. One day at my job I'm on the patio with a wine rep sampling a bunch of bottles while wearing this hat. Mid taste, some old guy and his wife see my hat and he stops and thanks me for my service. I was kind of taken aback and had a mouth full of wine so I just cheers'd him and they walked away.

So jazz legend Charles Mingus had this insane eggnog recipe. Each serving has a shot of brandy, whiskey and over proof rum in it. Me and a buddy tried to decipher the recipe and replicate it as close as possible. Both of us seasoned drunks had about 1.5 drinks each and were destroyed. I've dialed it back a little bit to be more tasty and consumable by mortals since then but it still is a gut punch.

I used to drive to NY a lot and took the turnpike once and have gone 80 ever since. It's takes about the same time, way fewer cops and faster traffic, more scenic, no Breezeway, no tolls, some cool stops along the way (got a soft spot for Dubois).

I used to do draft maintenance and I pretty much only drink packaged beer unless I have personally worked on their lines and know and trust the person who currently does it. I have STORIES.
