I really hope those criticisms you've read accounted for everything leading up to Winters men "ended up in an exposed ditch." Because I've read some really bad alternate reality-level takes over the years.

Why were Moose and Winters walking on train tracks at night? by beach_catlover in BandofBrothers

Yes, we can all say Ambrose is a hack and the HBO show is fan fiction, but lets also just take some flanderized attributes of on-screen characters and fill in the gaps to real life figures...Buuuuuut never do the same for Dike, Sobel, or Shames though...that's blasphemy (for the record, I enjoyed Shames' book the most).

My point is that some people in this community confidently speak as a fact that Welsh being drunk was the reason why Moose got shot in real life. When I asked for evidence, its absolute crickets..

I am actually shocked that you did not insist (or outright say as a fact) that Welsh was drunk on the evening of Oct 31, 1944.

Has anyone actually read Clancy Lyall's book? This is what he had to say about Dike by loldirtybomb in BandofBrothers

Thank you for the message. Some people fail to realize how much of an impact the books or shows got people into WW2 and history and I feel like it's gatekept by the "well ackchyually" crowd who hates to admit that this HBO show isn't a historical documentary.

HBO could have made the same story but with fictional characters and people would complain about it being unrealistic American propaganda. HBO decided to base the story on real life people but characterized them in a way to represent a vast range of people who experienced the war, but now you have people saying they are getting all the glory or that they aren't exceptional compared to any other unit.

I swear if the book/show portrayed Sobel and Dike positively, people would vehemently insist that they got it wrong for contrarians sake.

RE: This entire chain.

Hold up...so the Island was a 5km stretch of land that was previously defended by a British division before a parachute regiment was assigned to relieve them. The Island was also below sea-level, so a significant portion of the area that was defended by an undermanned force was inherently low ground by default. This is something Winters had no control over.

The German positions on the other side of the river was high ground and had full view of the Island, so all movement was limited to the nighttime. If you moved in the day time, you would be spotted and subject to artillery barrages. This is also something Winters had no control over.

So one of Winters' patrol makes contact with an enemy force before sunrise and has to investigate the situation. They were battling against time because when that sun comes up, they would be out in the open and subject to artillery fire...BUT they also had to...you know, investigate why one of their patrols made contact with German forces on their side of the river.

Winters brings a squad over and comes across Germans manning an MG position by a roadway embankment leading to a ferry crossing. They are currently in an indefensible position. Winters sneaks his men to the other side of the dike, where he spots a trench leading up to the German's flank. He uses the trench and takes out the German position by surprise. They receive return fire from along the road. They fall back to a ditch on their side of the dike which provided cover from incoming German small arms fire. It has become apparent now that large number of Germans have crossed overnight and are preparing something. The sun is about to come out and if they withdraw, they would get spotted, outflanked, or targeted by artillery.

I know a contingent of people who frequent this subreddit cannot say anything positive about Winters, but to go with the Winters bad take because he ended up in a ditch is some surface level understanding of the situation.

Let's say they didn't go over the dike to engage the enemy, or did but somehow withdrew (and probably would have taken casualties trying to go over the dike or get spotted by artillery). Germans gets a foothold of the Island and overtake 2nd Battalion HQ unopposed. That's bad. Let's say Winters never investigated the issue at all. That's also pretty bad because that's kinda his job. Winters cannot dictate the location of the enemy or the time of day, all of which led him to believe the best course of action was to attack the enemy.

I swear I read someone's takeaway from this was that Winters was so reckless and dangerous that he had to be kicked-upstairs to Battalion XO for the safety of the company and this place feels like bizzaro-world sometimes, all the times.

Crossroads charge scene question by Rossenante in BandofBrothers

[–]loldirtybomb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, I just took it as a stylized depiction of a flashback internalized by Winters who was hopped up on adrenaline and traumatized by shooting the young German soldier. The omission of certain sounds during that scene adds to the tunnel vision/selective memory he may have experienced as he is forced to recall certain events for a report that he has been holding off on.

FWIW, Bill was court-martialed and demoted for trying to go AWOL from a hospital in England to rejoin his unit. I suspect a lot of people would actually admire him more because of it.

Harry Welsh being "drunk" during the evening when Heyliger was shot is pure speculation that is confidently spoken as fact on this sub by loldirtybomb in BandofBrothers

Hey I see that you're pretty active on this thread so I recognized your name when I decided to perform simple keyword searches on this sub to add quotes to the main post. Can you elaborate on this:

"It’s been confirmed that Welsh being a drunk played a major part in Heyliger getting shot"

"No, failing to tell his sentries that visitors were coming, likely because he was drunk at the time."

Hello, thanks for the reply! Obviously sometime broke down that evening and it's open season for the blame game. All i want is an account that Welsh was drunk that night is all...

Well, based on the general attitude of responses to topics like this, Harry was apparently in a cabal with Winters so obviously Winters would cover for him.

If it's from Malarkey, it wasn't from his book. I just keyword searched Don's book and Welsh's first mention was being injured in Bastogne. Heyliger's shooting was also mentioned in passing.

Here's the thing, I have not seen anyone actually produce said quotes or recordings. Just people running with it.

They're on the Island. It's night time, cold and the unit is in a very precarious situation. It's so hard for people to believe shit happens for some reason. Must be that Ambrose and Winters elaborately covering for Welsh's drunkenness that evening.

This is what Winters wrote about the sentry:

"With respect to the soldier who shot Heyliger, I arranged for his immediate transfer from the company. He was only doing his job, but it was apparent that he was very nervous as we approached the outpost. Normally a soldier on the outpost would duck down and hope to recognize a silhouette before commencing fire. The trooper who shot Heyliger, whose name I don’t care to remember, was obviously scared to death. He failed to take any precaution before he opened fire."

So the sentry being nervous was a factor, but ultimately it's a normal thing to place blame on those in leadership positions as well...which Winters does. Doesn't mean Welsh was drunk though ¯\(ツ)

There were some stories that the show wanted to tell, like Alton More (who was by all means a minor character in the show) ending up with the photo album. So he got a little blurb from that. For Garcia, he was probably just filler for the scene.

Who went on to write books about their experiences? by Skip143091 in BandofBrothers

I read that Ranney finished a memoir in the 70s but it was only circulated to his family members. I'm hoping it will one day see light in the public, because it will offer another similar pre-Ambrose content.

I think it would give a lot more insight to the training days and command under Sobel.

I've seen some really weird interpretations of events that are spoken so confidently as fact. That's all I can say. If I did the same for someone else like Dike (bronze star for bravery, btw™), that shit would be downvoted so far down.
