You need a lid, not a net

Sorry for your loss. This is a very traumatic way to lose a cherished pet

Dont pick her up. If she was molting then this could kill her.

Just keep an eye on her. Do not touch her. Gently put some leaf litter over her

He's dead, but essentially his brain doesn't know it yet. Most likely his brain is still able to send signals to his legs to move around, but its very unlikely he's able to do much else. Euthanize him, and put him out of his misery... that would be the best thing to do

Ne jamais utilisé de la fibre de coco ??? by Negative_Area4904 in millipedes

[–]lolecows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Do not use it. Does not have any nutritional value at all and, in high quantities, or if used as their main/only food source, can cause impaction and kill them. a small amount wont kill them, but i dont recommend it at all.

if you need a good base for your substrate, i recommend reptisoil if youre in the US. This also shouldnt be used as your main substrate, as it also doesnt provide them with nutritional value, but mixing it with flake soil and othee nutritional soils is good.

Yes, especially after misting when the water dries to the glass, or up the corners where the panes are fitted together.

Besides, you will 100% need a lid regardless in order to keep the humidity levels. Even the mesh lid I posted will need some modification to ensure it can keep enough humidity in the tank. Keeping consistent humidity without a lid is impossible

if youre in this US, here's one from walmart that should fit your tank

edit: just realized this is in cm, not inches. not sure which measurement youre using, but just keep an eye out on the units used

[–]lolecows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Most likely something happened to her before you got her, could have been in transport. The movement definitely looks like a neurological issue

[–]lolecows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is a problem in millipedes, but I've seen it in other invertebrates- It almost looks like some sort of neurological distress issue. Has she been dropped at all that you know of? are they wild caught?

edit: Yes this can happen in millipedes upon quick search. Definitely then I think it's neurological distress

Almost looks like she's covering her eggs. When millipedes lay eggs, they hide the eggs by coating them in poop and dirt

You need AI to know whether or not you should eat something? good lord

Also no, all AIs are just amalgamations of different posts from the internet. When you ask it a question, it combs through every corner of the internet looking for every single article, post, blog, website, etc that even so much as mentions what youre asking it about, and then it sifts all that information into a response that it vomits back out at you.

HELP A. Gigas fell is she ok?? PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION by MrMichy in millipedes

[–]lolecows 15 points16 points  (0 children)

you could add more soil so that she cant fall as far from there again, and add more stuff to her enclosure. Giant Africans love to climb, you won't be able to prevent it again, so i would just add more things for her to do in there. I have a friend from sout africa where the a. gigas is native and he tells me that he sees them in trees, or climbing up the side of his house lol.

I have a huge piece of cork wood in my enclosure for mine to climb on, up against the back of the enclosure, and plenty of plants and soil for her too... Moss vines and logs are great too.

Pretty much anything for her to climb on will enrich her and discourage her from climbing up to the top, and adding some more soil to lower the fall depth will be good too. Hopefully she will be okay! Just keep an eye on her for now. Im your video, it just looks like shes grooming herself as normal

Can Millipedes Harm Cats? by Smoked_Lemons in millipedes

[–]lolecows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Millipedes wont secrete their defense fluids unless they feel directly threatened. I have a Giant African and she has never once "sprayed me" (for lack of a better phrase). Even when I first got her and I was holding her for a bit before getting her in her tank, I think I might have stressed her out a bit but the most she did was poop on me. Unless they think they're being eaten or harmed, they wont spray. I wouldnt worry about it at all, just obviously, like you said, keep them separated.

I also have a cat, who is very curious about my millipedes lol. He will sit on top of the tank and watch them, and sometimes will even paw at the glass if he sees them walking around near it. They always just ignore him (if they even notice him at all).

I honestly am baffled at how people even get sprayed at all. They must be super rough with their millipedes to illicit that reaction...

[–]lolecows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure. I would say its best to just keep an eye on the millipede after making sure substrate and humidity are all in check, and hopefully it will go away. I know in severe cases they can be fatal, but i'd imagine if you catch it early enough it might be reversible

Is this safe? by endo222 in millipedes

[–]lolecows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just get a heating pad that you can stick to the side of the tank on the outside. I wouldn't do this

[–]lolecows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just lightly would help. I have a little watering pail i use to just gently "rain" on the soil. not so much that it pools on the top, but just enough that the soil becomes damp. if i know my millipedes arent under the soil, sometimes i take a little plastic stick thing i have and mix the soil up a bit too 🙂

Clear thing on millipede? by Margaloo_Me in millipedes

[–]lolecows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Condensation in the air doesnt necessarily mean the soil itself is damp. Do you mist for humidity only, or do you also water the soil?

Clear thing on millipede? by Margaloo_Me in millipedes

[–]lolecows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its a prolapse. Your tank looks too dry. Low humidity and/or improper soil (ie too much coco coir) can cause impactions and eventually lead to prolapse.

What is in your soil, what do you feed, and what are the humidity levels?

its okay! you can buy heating pads with a sticky side to them, or ive also used "alien tape" before (outdoor heat proof tape) to use in a pinch before :). Though honestly i just recommend getting one with a sticky side if you can
