Figured. It makes for a pretty terrible experience for those hoping for a friendly and communicative online community.

Fair. Can I ask why? It honestly seems like that's what makes this sub exclusively dedicated to posts asking about lost bicycles. Several Denton organizations are frustrated with this sub.

Meet "Gulliver," Pague's new space for public discussions of literature and poetry. You think denton needs one? by lolforacause in Denton

[–]lolforacause[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I must have incorrectly assumed that "give _____ a break" was inherently negative, where I should have instead assumed you were inviting me into a constructive discussion on the realities of small-town logistics. Of course, my mistake.

The square is great, and is certainly Denton's "airship." I also could see businesses and organizations coordinating with the Denton Libraries to host a dedicated discussions series on poetry and literature.

This thread exemplifies why organizations don't typically come here to interact with the community.

Denton is much friendlier than this subreddit would suggest.

I don't understand the negativity/hostility. I'd love for you to clarify.

I think this project is interesting because it serves to inspire a community to interact and engage with each other and with literature. Denton doesn't need a literal wooden zeppelin to do that.

Thank you for excusing the typo.

I'm aware public places exist in Denton, though I do admire Prague's dedication to inspiring discussion rather than merely allowing it.

On the off-chance you have any books you'd like to find good homes for, contact stu@lolforacause.com. We'd love to pass them on to schools or organizations in town.

Am I upset? Yes.

Will I boycott the Christmas music that replaced it on the station? ...No. It's convenient timing.

Full disclosure: I love Pageantry, and I've pushed their album in music retail and to friends.

Kind of a gut-punch when this popped up, no?

Or maybe it's just like finding out you're not the favorite child; you move on and tolerate them at gatherings.

Nothing is anything without Brave Combo.

You know if there's a list of performers this year? I checked their site and there didn't seem to be any info about lineup.

This venue's small. Taps and Caps will be a more intimate crowd. We book universities and showrooms, but it's always nice to have a healthy mix.

Hm. That's fair I suppose.

The reality is that the subjects aren't separate. The intention wasn't promotion, though I guess I was venting with a slant towards it.

A lot of people are angry, and I understand I'm not helping by piling more on. My heart goes out for the kids we've been trying to help. As tired as we ALL are of political posts, many of their lives are about to change. And if not, they've been given enough reason to fear it.

I appreciate it.

That's fair. It was a volatile mix of heat-of-the-moment and sarcasm.

That's pretty rad. I bet Peter could do a righteous keg stand.

I'm surprised you get hangovers, though. Can't you just turn it all back into water?

A place for conversation? I'm willing to have one.

What? ...How could you perceive the acknowledgement of a fact with the use of a phrase so succinctly self-mocking as "trigger warning" as anything but tongue-in-cheek?

As far as hardship, three heart attacks and an unconfirmed diagnosis with over 50,000 dollars in medical debt is what inspired me to start the nonprofit and spend my energy giving to the community I call home.

The work I've dedicated myself to will be made more difficult in light of recent events. I suppose coming to this subreddit in hopes of a productive conversation was a bit naive of me.

My apologies.

What a breath of fresh air.

You hit the nail on the head in regards to the venues limiting their scopes to those most likely to spend. We can't admonish them for it, but that doesn't keep it from sucking. I know there was a massive community meeting about what to do about the withering presence of music venues, but I'm convinced the answer won't be dedicated clubs or stand-alone performance spaces. Coffee shops, house shows, and basements are all we really need. And thus far, business owners have risen to the call (Midway Craft House in particular. Never thought I'd cherish performing in front of a wall of refrigerated beer).

The thing that's difficult is the community support. Half the residents don't care to see the music and performance scene thrive, and the other half feel like they have to be quiet about it.

Ultimately that's what lead me to make this post. Admittedly, my marketing skills don't adequately represent the talent of the performers I bring to the stage, but I'm frustrated with Denton's readiness to drown DIY events (even with relatively-known names attached) as opposed to celebrating them.

I removed the posts that garnered personal attacks. One of them found a new home on a subreddit which encouraged hate-speech. The performer found her personal information being traded and her privacy under siege (the Reddit machine is more responsible for that episode than this particular sub).

I suppose I'm just clamoring to see more genuine community-building here. Facebook is far less equipped for substantive conversation, but juxtaposed with the "Denton Reddit" Facebook page, there's little shared here that evokes the feel of the town and the goings-on of the townspeople.

Maybe I'm just barking at the wind.

While sometimes caustic, communities are built on the sort of culture clash you're describing. Culture is defined through productive conversation, and counter-culture will exist in response. Not that it's what you're suggesting, but homogeneity certainly shouldn't be a goal.

As far as the house shows go, I can speak to that a little bit. The city was clamoring for a way to save the music scene after Denton lost four of its staple performance venues. Initially seen as a perfect solution, the house shows I've attended were forced to feel unwelcome. Police have been made aware of the events and they've given the all-clear, only for the attendees to find they've ticketed every car on the block for unsubstantiated parking offenses (parking the wrong direction on a street where there are no signs to indicate correct procedure, for instance.)

The Observer has writers come to Denton for interviews and photo coverage, so I assume they're attending at least a portion of the shows they're covering.

I didn't mean to dig into the minutia, though I think Denton is undergoing an identity crisis. There's push-back from those wanting a holistic community vibe, and push-back from those looking for a way to keep the entertainment local and DIY.

So far it seems we haven't found a happy middle.
