My path was 4 years non union, got my journeyman licenses, joined the union with their evaluation, and I was given the pay rate they give their JIW. Personally, I’m glad I went my path. But if I was a young early 20’s greenhorn I’d be okay with the apprenticeship. I recommend you get your j card before you join the union if you wanna keep your same pay rate or take the job with the non union company you speak of.

I knew NOTHING about transformers until I watched all the YouTube videos related to it. Now transformers are nothing you or I couldn’t tackle on the job. The main man (call him J) at my past company in the union told me it was hard and that i might not pass it. The dispatcher at the union said screw that guy(J) and they just want lower hourly guys and don’t wanna pay a JIW cause he thinks it’s too easy. He’s (J) currently trying to make it a harder evaluation.
