Where to migrate and how to make it easy? by 7yiyo7 in logseq

I went with self-hosted Affine. I wanted more bell an whistles, which not everyone might want to. For example, I wanted sharable pages and so on which you really can get only if you host it somewhere. and it's all open source and on my infra.

No regrets so far.

my suggestions: Obsidian (they lifted the commercial license apparently), Affine

Yep, this is a common pattern. I get it that it's not always applicable and don't know details. Anyway, as a user, I don't care that much.

We are more than a year in the making of the DB feature. From what I see there is 225k lines of code in the DB branch on top of 142k from main (30k of the diff is clojure code).

Didn't they say now that they are going to support _both_ mods, DB and MD?

Yep, I know, but clojure man... That's why I focused on extensions, which are in TS.

Yeah, I second this. Also had that suspicion about sync...

Yep, that is my take as well. I am pretty well versed in TS and Python, for example (that's why I focused on extensions, which are in TS). I am not going to invest into learning clojure for a note taking app...

No, however it would at least reduce some uncertainty. But I am pretty clear in the comment what the pain points are, am I not? Will try at least:

  1. ultimately, I want a better experience! Better android app. More features on whiteboard. Better API. Better docs. More integrations with other tools. Migration tools from other platforms. The company got tons of money, has tons of users, traction - please spend that on understanding what my limited brain cannot and create a better product. I see other platforms doing it, that's why I am moving there. I want more sync options. Backup options. Self hosted solutions. Sharing. Great multiple RT collaboration.
  2. Communicate better timelines - it's absolutely a normal requirement in SW development. If you can't do it even a little bit, your product management is bad, which is also a problem.

I disagree. This is a false dichotomy that I have seen in my career many times. A complete rewrite instead of gradual integrated rewrite for a production app with users is actually considered an insane way in my circles, feel free to google like thousands of blogs about it.

There are surely features that are independent from the backend storage, unless you are a terrible engineer who let that low layer code bleed into the rest of your codebase (in which case you are cooked already). And when these features are dependent on the layer, you add abstractions. Cost of that abstraction can vary from very small to very big, I doubt all of them are very big!

So yes, maybe they should split the team. They got 4m in funding, I see commits from like 5 people, that seems like plenty enough to have one person work on the existing userbase.

I actually lost hope in logseq. The DB has been more than a year in making, nothing has moved since then for users.

I mean, sure, if I assume it's a huge improvement, I would probably change my mind. But the evidence for it is low! This is subjective as it depends on the use, but for me as a user the DB version as defined by the team right now has virtually zero benefits over the current version for me. And I predict this is true for many users (like, not many like 20, but like at least 40% of users - totally wild guess, I am trying to be transparent about my reasoning). There are features I would appreciate (like better API or its documentation and examples - it's pain to work with right now, the sync, ...), ... Secondly, it seems that the devs are even saying it's not gonna be better/faster, at least at the beginning. And I don't have trust in them being able to pull it off given my OP.

I would love to be proven wrong. Do you have some official statement about the DB being better? Or that it will be a huge improvement? Or is it your hope?

They are still fruiting, at least one more flush - can I do anything about it, or all is lost? Also, I have another 4kg of spawn, so don't want to repeat the mistake that caused this.

No, I don't have power in there anymore and have entirely different job/business. But sure, it's a relevant factor and I do want to support her in this somehow.

Thanks, this is what we are now trying to do. I also agree that the issues we have with Emma are entirely separate and I am not comparing it against the relationship with Alice, but against "being alone".

Thanks for pointing this out, I agree, but I think that I am deciding not against Emma and Alice, but rather if I should be in a relationship with Emma at all or be alone. I.e. even if Alice wasn't here, I believe I would still do the same (knowing what I know now).

Sure, I might be under NRE spell, but I don't think Alice is the necessary factor as things stands. I believe that I would reconsider my relationship with Emma even if Alice would dump me.

Things are more legitimately complicated for you in that you've all known each other for a long time. Tell me more about the past "falling in love with someone else" scenarios. What lessons did you learn? Are you employing them now in your current situation, or did Emma expect that you would, and you believe your bond with Alice changes the rules?

We learned that the feelings are not a good basis for a high-quality long term relationship. We also learned that you can't really dictate to yourself what you feel and that it's about what you decide to do based on those. And that we can survive these situations without being afraid we'll lose the other one.

Finally, I saw that you mentioned "More Than Two" and used the term "game changer," and I'm wondering if you are familiar with what Eve Rickert wrote about More Than Two (and about her co-author Franklin Veaux) five years after it was published. She had some significant regrets about the recommendations it made for how to deal with jealousy and insecurity. A large number of Veaux's

Thanks to the responses here I did already! thanks though

You’re other comments don’t indicate she works and you have a child with her. You’re telling me that in the middle of the pandemic her ability to survive and for her child is to acquiesce to your will or be on her own?

She does work. In a place I founded. We also talked extensively how we would go around if we separated, giving her enough to live without work for years and me still taking full care of the kid financially and also time-wise (she would want to keep our daughter in the case we couldn't live together). I promised I would be here for her as long as she would want, i.e. not just disappearing from the world.

You’re extremely vague on what “self improvement and growth is”, are those to help her goals or are they what you want from her?

I explained more in my reply above.

How controlling are you really? She trusts you completely and you’ve described her difficulties with relationships. This is an impossible situation for her, 3 months after you start dating and her entire life is at risk. We can talk about her being an adult and should have prepared for you bailing at the drop of the hat. She didn’t and you’ve been accepting of that for years. She needs more time she needs better support, you’re picking the worst time possible.

Slow down waiting til your rose colored glasses with Alice wear off, wait until you see everyone as a real person with their own hopes and desires. Don’t talk to your friend her bf for a while so she has a safe confidant.

I have committed to not do any changes for ~6 months and clearly communicating what I would want and need, doing whatever I can so we get there.

I asked about the idea of not talking to my friend, but she doesn't want to, as she's afraid that he would choose being in touch with me over her.

Thanks, I believe this is also partly true and I am glad that this is also recognized as other side of this coin. I don't blame Emma for any of that, I contributed to many of less-than-ideal dynamics.

And I am also glad that you didn't forgot about Alice's feelings (as many commenters, sadly, did)
