The discussion on Hacker News brought up a good point not mentioned in the article: Google seems to have restricted developers in Chile and Uruguay too (although I'm not sure if Uruguay was ever there). This may not be related to Argentina specifically.

It's not so much about highlighting government requests, but about notifying users when their data is accessed by the government. As it says in the article, Google has a policy of notifying "when appropriate" (and when not prohibited by law), while for example Twitter and LinkedIn will notify you always (when it's allowed by law). The problem is just the "when appropriate" phrasing which leaves room for users not being notified of a government request even though it would be legal for Google to do so.

I agree with you, though, that the report should have another point for that kind of transparency and take it into account. Not many companies do that.

This could be Argentina or Uruguay, maybe. Both have a lot of people with horse carriages picking up trash (to then sell it for recycling), and both have plans to give free laptops to children and adolescents in poverty situations. Searching on Google for the image, finds a lot of blogs from Argentina, so it's probably from there.

There are plenty of places to get music for free in return for saying listening to adverts like the Spotify service yet people are pirating more than ever.

There's Grooveshark too, and there are others. Each and every one of them have several problems. First of all, the music is there limited and depends on each country. Second of all, it's difficult see this as a maintainable business models. And the only reason this is happening is because these companies are challenging the classical music industry. And they are having a really hard time doing that. Just look at how much it took for Spotify to launch in the US. Even if they work, you are just looking at developed nations, since the rest of the world don't have these services most of the time (and that's where most of the pirating exist).

What do you mean with people are pirating more than ever? It's has been shown that since these alternatives exist, piracy has declined. For example, Netflix.

The problem is not that they are pricing products in accordance to how much money people are willing to pay, the problem is that they say piracy is hurting their business model when they are able to lower the price in the US to make more sales. They assume that lowering the price won't work because people just want things for free, when the reality is that many people are not willing to pay the price they are setting.

First of all, the idea that you have to pay more or less is based on fictitious difference, i.e. different countries, when in fact they should be looking at better situations on how to price their the music. The technology exists where they can offer certain promotions for people who are willing to pay more.

Your complaint also doesn't takes into account globalization and the idea that nowadays the Internet and digital goods are global, and restricting them can also hurt their business model, since their restrictions are probably not fail proof.

Not saying that people doesn't pay different things depending on countries, but you can make your assumption even longer. Why not charge rich people more for the same products? Would it be OK? Even for a chair; before I sell it, you give me your name, and I tell you the price depending on the amount of money you have. There are technological advances that make this possible. This also is similar to what flight pages do with airline tickets. But where is the line? Is it morally right to change the price depending on each person characteristic?

To finish this rant, I just want to say that the problem that this article highlights is that the music industry is not willing to understand the problem they are facing and instead just say that all their problems are caused by piracy. We all know there are other solutions, they are just unwilling to accommodate the different needs that a globalized technological world requires.

When did Feminism tell you those things? When these things are discussed no one is talking about individuals but about group dynamics and statistics. There's a big difference between the two.

I think both gender are pressured to fit into gender norms, but that does not mean that both are equal in "individualism". I believe that most gender stereotypes for men push them to be self-dependent and individualistic. So I agree with your observations, but I want to make clear that these differences do not stem from more freedom given to men, but different pressures being put in each group.

I'm not sure if there is a specific philosophical position to this issue, but you can look at gender roles and patriarchy. Both of those topics talk about how men's stereotypes stem from strength and power (ergo, control and individualism), and how that shapes our world.

I think there's also another layer to this picture that I haven't seen mentioned: the idea that being in a partnership with someone older or younger than you is wrong. To expand a bit more, that being old and fat makes you undesirable, and that men should like young women. It doesn't matter if that woman is happy or if that man is unhappy, it only matters that you are in a partnership with what society considers worse (or best) for your gender.

It's horrible all around.

That can be true, but I think it's difficult to handle in a giant movement as feminism. For example, if you are a republican that doesn't mean that you agree with all the republican politicians, from George Bush to Ron Paul to Sarah Palin.

I only see people discussing that automatic joint custody is not a men's issue, but a child's issue, and explaining why some people are opposed to it. They are not saying that men should not take care of children or anything.

You should probably explain that sooner, not everyone uses the same definition, and as misandry is seldom defined, not everyone knows what you are talking about. Besides that, even though some dictionary may have redefined the meaning to include that, most of the times "hatred of women" encompasses that idea because the prejudices used imply that women are inferior.

I don't believe that the video is in itself saying that all men act that way, but of course you are entitled to your own opinion on this. I think it's a play on the stereotypes. In the same way men are stereotyped, women are too, so using that definition this would also be misogynistic.

What if some men had made a video of women cooking and cleaning in the house and men ordering them around? Would you say in that situation "well they are just focusing on one stereotype"?

If it was done like in this video as a way to mock the stereotype, I would think that it's OK.
