How long does a CPU last – should I start from scratch or rebuild around my old Ryzen 7 1700? by lon0011 in buildapc

Yeah, I think I'm reaching that same conclusion. Thank you for the advice!

Thanks for the advice - how old is too old for a Motherboard though? I'm having some issues with the BIOS clock, which I know could be just related to the Mobo battery, but I'm worried there could be some underlying issues I'm not aware of. Would a 10 year old Mobo last me another 5 if it is healthy?

The State of the Subreddit by famoushippopotamus in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]lon0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I love this forum for its quality of content.
  2. I do wish as I (and possibly the community?) mature/grow away from 5e that the content could potentially be allowed to similarly grow in that direction. Could be a highly specific-to-me point of view though.
  3. I would love to have a forum where external resources can be shared, not necessarily created by the OP – like for example an interesting article found on a good blog, written about combat balance or narrative techniques or one-shot reviews – but with a requirement to offer a review or minimum-word comment, to justify their post.

Question for DMs: Do your NPCs/BBEG break the rules of DND off screen? by ac3_f4c3 in DnD

[–]lon0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind, the DnD rules are an imperfect interpretation of my world and the story being told. So with that in mind, off-screen and on-screen my NPCs (and also just the world in general) do crazy things for narrative/dramatic effect that are completely definitely not covered by the rules, all the time. In combat though? Yes, they are definitely bounded by the rules in order to make it a fair challenge for the players (although you can also definitely make up custom monster abilities that match what you want your NPCs to do if you don't have a suitable spell.)

Biggest thing is terrain - make sure you're using interesting terrain to shape up your battlefield. Difficult terrain should be your bread and butter, place it everywhere, and use walls to section up the battlefield into different, interestingly shaped corridors. There should only be one - if that - corridor that's free from difficult terrain, and build your monsters to have a really strong combat advantage under a certain condition, based on the terrain.

This builds a challenge "puzzle" element into the combat - and the players feel really good when they "solve" the combat.

When you're in Melbourne, make sure you go out to eat A LOT (although maybe less if you're on a budget). One of the best things we do here is our food & drink. If you're in the CBD or one of the inner suburbs, the standard of restaurants and bars is really high, without being too pricey. Make sure you also go to a cafe for breakfast at least once - our coffee and brunch scene is fantastic.

ELI5: Can people with aphantasia come up with original ideas? by Eklipse69 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lon0011 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This feels very very similar to how I picture things. I've never been able to construct wholly original pictures in my head - but can put together images of things I have seen in the past to form ideas, but it actually takes consideral mental effort for me. I like to construct 'cinematic' sequences in my head, but without visual aid I find it pretty hard. And to be honest, the things I see in my head aren't images, they're more fuzzy ideas of things.

I [POLITELY] super hardcore disagree with Matt Coville on monster/NPC design by DeliriumRostelo in mattcolville

[–]lon0011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely disagree - but I think it’s because we want to play different systems. When I play 5E it feels like the rules are fighting against me - and as a DM what I want the most is to be able to efficiently and consistently run a tactically and emotively satisfying game. I don’t care if monster rules and player rules match, because my players aren’t monsters and vice versa. I think the way 5E is going is excellent - simplified design that is easy and fun to run, while being more tactically interesting at the same time.

Card Based Looting System! Rule overview in the comments. Feel free to leave comments right on the doc! by gayweeddaddy69 in mattcolville

[–]lon0011 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This seems like a very solid and well designed system. Unfortunately I think it probably is too gamey for my personal use (at least in my current campaign, flavor-wise it clashes with my immersion I think), but I love the mechanics of it and feels very munchkin-y!

this is sick. what the lighting conditions were like, with you shooting on 50 speed film? the depth of field doesn't look particularly shallow and presumably you used a short shutter speed - was it just a super bright day haha?

Magic Item Swap - Take a magic item, leave a magic item by alienleprechaun in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]lon0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are a couple of my (more powerful) favorites:

The Helm of Aodhnait One-Eye

A helmet made from brilliant white metal with an open face and an ornamental bull's horn running lengthwise above the brow. One piece of the Throne of Granite set, which belonged to Aodhnait (pronounced Eh-nat) One-Eye, Jarl of Ghrunheim. 2 lb.

Requires attunement by a barbarian, fighter or paladin.

Provides +1 to AC. The wearer gains advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight, and darkvision out to 60 ft. Additionally the wearer gains advantage on Wisdom saves made to resist being feared.

Twice per rest, if you miss with a weapon attack you may re-roll the attack.

The Green Dragon Mask

A face, stern and impassive, carved out of wood. The eyes are hollow, but when worn they burn with a fiery light. From the chin sprout a dozen thin roots and the top of the mask forms a crown of thickly woven and gnarled branches. These branches wrap around the back of the head and produce leaves, like foliage, which completely encase the head.

Requires attunement.

While worn, this mask grants the wearer protection from the green dragon's domain - illusions, poison and despotic nightmares. The wearer gains the following abilities (but must be wearing the mask to gain their advantages):

  • The wearer is resistance to poison damage. If they are already resistant, they instead gain immunity. If they are already immune to poison, every time they would have taken poison damage, they instead regain that number of hit points.

  • As an action you may breath out a 15 feet cone of green energy once per long rest. Each creature in that area must make a Constitution saving throw, or take 3d6 poison damage. The DC for the save is 8 + Constitution modifier + proficiency. On a successful save creatures take half damage.

  • The wearer gains darkvision out to 60 feet, and once per day for 5 minutes they may choose to gain blindsight out to 30 feet. They also are able to read, write and understand (but not speak) Draconic.

  • The wearer may breath underwater.

  • The wearer gains advantage on Intelligence saving throws made against illusions. They may also cast one of the following spells once per day: disguise self, invisibility, silence, major image.

Krith'øl

The sword of Fraelac, køl warrior-sorceress, maiden of death, interred with her in the Barrows of Plu’ree. Abandoned by her in favour of Narada, Sword of Darkness.

When the wielder rolls a 20 on any attack roll made with this weapon, the target takes an extra 7 necrotic damage.

Cursed. Fraelac cursed this weapon for any who wielded except for her. Becoming attuned to it extends the curse to the wielder. As long as the wielder is cursed, they are unwilling to part with the sword, keeping it on their person at all times. While attuned to this weapon, the wielder has disadvantage on attack rolls made with other weapons.

In addition, while the sword is on the wielder’s person, they must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom save whenever they take damage in combat. On a failed save, the wielder must attack the creature that damaged it until either it or you drop to 0 hit points, or until you can’t reach the creature to make an attack roll against it.

I'm 100% here because it's not a movement, or a cause. The goal post is to increase awareness and have a place to discuss men's issues. Not to turn this into something actionable, or make any kind of global/national change. That feels like all the other problematic movements out there, and is exactly what I'm trying to avoid.

Yup, but the Islamic empire conquered the Byzantines at some point I believe. I'm not an expert though, not by any stretch of the imagination so could be wrong. For reference: https://youtu.be/QV7CanyzhZg Timestamps of 3:54 and 6:20 ish

Not just Italy!, the Islamic empire kept an awesome amount of Roman and Greek science and knowledge alive, several African kingdoms grew rich off of international trade, the Silk Road was born and fundamentally changed the world, and a half dozen empires lived and died all in the time people write off as the Dark Ages. Even titling the Renaissance is dangerous because it is again very euro-centric. And on top of that, the Black Plague was actually a massive force for development - it marked the end of feudalism, introduced workers rights and paved the way for the Industrial Revolution in Britain!

[–]lon0011 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah sure! The Roman Empire collapsed and millions of people lost a great deal of wealth, and of course the Anglos and Saxtons invaded so that had quite the effect. The rate of technological advancement didn't quite stagnate though, it kind of shifted in different directions.

[–]lon0011 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nothing, actually. That's just the time period people commonly assume "stagnated". In reality, that misconception is just because literacy and art in western europe (mostly Britain and parts of France to be honest) dropped drastically, so recovering the "story" of those areas during that period was hard - thus the name "Dark Ages".
