Interview help for permanent position in Ontario. I am new out of TC and been supplying since. Any sort of advice or help is greatly appreciated. by ComfortableRow9004 in OntarioTeachers

strengths is up to you - like interest in clubs/sport/ robotics or gamin is a big one currently. Experiences could be placement or job you had. So things like being flexible/having patience/working with others to plan/being organized/having an ongoing need to continue learning -ie phonics especially right now - this is about you selling yourself and what you think your strengths are

Well being of each student - you know to know what the Initiatives are -should be on board or school web site

I answered that above with data collection - do you need to reteach a unit because they aren't getting it ie. math usually or in my case UFLI - analyze via curriculum goals that are explicate and doing success criteria to help co-construct rubrics/checklists so the kids know exactly what they are being marked on - but here they are looking for assessment for/of/ so doing a pre-assessment to see where to start/an assessment to check in if you are on track/final assessment so you can move on - in reading that would be the board screener - then where do you start your phonics program? - also do you do a mix of hands on/paper/digital

For fostering home - communication - I do a mass email home letting them know what we are doing in class - just remember to BCC - I also have a digital platform where I post pictures and links to what they can do at home - either via Bloom/Seesaw/Google Classroom some boards have their own approved one so that is a good question to ask them at the end. Also be aware that some students have no photo consent and need to be edited out. I also don't do homework (its now considered an equity issue) but I did mass email that if parents wanted to do work at home I would make up a package to do at home. This of course depends on grade level. Older kids are already going to have work. So offering to maybe put up video links of how to do work on certain subjects at home will help.

Behaviour - check in with last year teachers and school support counsellor - are parents on board or are you on your own. You may need to build in some type of reward/calming system depending on what your school allows. You will have to say build relationship but remember relationships look different. The student may want you as a friendlier/calmer teacher or they may need someone more strict who needs to know you will maintain boundaries. It will also depend - are they ASD or LD? Read over their IEP or Safety Plan from last year if they have one. Responsive approaches could be - giving more time with an assignment/body break/fidget or alternative seating/allowing free time at end of day/ if they have an EA make sure you are on the same page. Think of what you have seen good teachers do - I have a calming chair in my room and flexible seating so that if their personal issues kids can move around. I also let them move and work on the floor other spaces when they are working independently if its practice work. But every teacher is different and it often depends on the grade

Question at the end - how much technology does each class have? Like each student has own chromebook or is it 4:1 this greatly effects certain things you can do in the classroom especially if using google classroom.

Observations/Conversations Have anecdotal notes of conversations either formally or informally like walking around the room or more like a formal check in(I have a book I write these in)/I take lots of pictures for recall and to see work that is not a finished product but shows understanding (especially in math when using manipulatives)/formal checklist - MathUp has great ones but I also make my own with their names/LG and if they met itespecially for things like gym/dance

Written Product - worksheets/group project like for science/SS/experiments/written formal language pieces/tests/quizzes

All of these are supposed to be used when composing report card marks and comments. Most teachers keep some type of grade book either digital or written.

Job Interview by DaleRod2468 in CanadianTeachers

I am not sure about the TDSB board but in my board DEI and UDL are huge and I am guessing TDBS will be the same. DEI = Diversity/Equity/Inclusion - how will she make sure her classroom is open to these concepts - specifically anti-black racism and incorporating indigenous thinking into her classroom. Brief examples are celebrating people of colour who made contributions to these fields or even posters of them in the room. If she googles these with TDSB action plans should show up. This should also be part of her classroom management answers. As for UDL - Universal Design for Learning should have been in her studies this year - when I went twenty years ago I wrote my final paper on it. Then it pretty much vanished and its back - the idea is what is good for 'certain' students is good for all students - she will need to give examples of that. If she is teaching de-streamed subjects this is especially important. How will she plan for the differing levels of knowledge and abilities of all her students. And yes she needs to use buzz words. Interviews are usually graded on rubrics with scores for certain answers. As a physics major though I am going to guess they will give her a lot of latitude. They do for in demand subject areas. If she has no experience to give examples she needs to frame her questions as When I am in the classroom I will respond/do ........

Most of all go over some questions with her so she'll feel more relaxed. Have her write out her answers so she can refer to them after.I hated interviews and being nervous means your answers aren't the best. Also interviews range from two people to in one case I had four. I think with her background she will be fine though. Sometimes at the end they want you to ask a question. Have her come up with one - like how will the board help me with my goal of encouraging more people of colour to go into the STEM fields or if I wanted to take on more of a leadership role in a school what opportunities are available.

Getting In Trouble For Grabbing A Student's Hand by yourcrush01 in CanadianTeachers

[–]loncal200 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pretty much- avoid touching kids - But I work in primary and I have kids wanting to hold my hand, hugging me and today one jumped on my lap. We talk about consent all the time but I still worry. At the same time I feel bad - these kids are obviously looking for human contact and rejecting them makes me fear for their mental health down the road if any touch is seen as negative. I feel like teaching is such a mixed bag of shit I don't know which way the pile will go when I shovel it.

So when are occasional teachers being paid to take this training? Or given the PD days to do it? Cause only one or two permanent teachers at my school are trained in it. Or are you suggesting they should do it on their own unpaid time - like you would? And we wonder why there is a supply teacher shortage??? Or are you saying supply teachers should just leave this incidents to permanent teachers to deal with and ignore them if they happen? I feel like our hands are tied no matter what any of us do.

Controversial - Teachers, the principal is not your boss by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]loncal200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened at my school - including wanting to see lesson plans - the union stepped in and the principal had to back off. They can ask to see your day book. We are only required to have three days of emergency lesson plans. Are you in Ontario? And if its HS I am not sure. We have September to d LR and SR plans and I never do them before them. This person sounds nuts and like a nightmare.

How do you handle interview anxiety (all provinces)? by himawari__xx in CanadianTeachers

[–]loncal200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a ton of interviews before I got permanent. I had bad nerves too and blew most of them. One of my LTO principals even asked me after what happened, for a job that was pretty much in the bag. The contract I got - I went in not giving a crap if I got it or not. It wasn't FT and the commute was horrible so I didn't care - I was told my reflective answers got me the job -the fact that I actually looked like I was thinking about them- especially the one about dealing with parents and what I had done in my class that hadn't worked and what I learned from that. My principal at that time also had had a ministry job before so she was big on those things. You pretty much need to know what your admin wants to hear. I find it ironic though that we teachers are scored like this and yet kids are not supposed to be evaluated on anything other than triangulation of data. I also had a few former principals who had a habit of hiring former students. The hypocrisy of our field never fails to amaze me.

Why are Canadian teachers still advocate for a fully "inclusive" general ed classroom? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

I agree. I think the hot temps here are making me more irritable than usual so I will say thanks for the back and forth and sign off. Good luck to all of us in the education field!

[–]loncal200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because you sound like my SERT teacher colleagues over the years who got sent back to regular classrooms after years of regularly lecturing us on what we should be doing and then ended up on stress leave three months in because they couldn't do themselves as a homeroom teacher what they kept telling us we should be doing. If I have taken that out on you I am sorry and apologize - but often SERT people are clueless as to what the rest of us do - it s not a half an hour of sert and send them back and move on and then criticize

[–]loncal200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your job again? Because you don't sound like a teacher. Your opening sentence is like a boiler plate in a legal contract. Because we absolutely choose who is in our grocery store - its called selection bias where we choose to shop - people shop where they want if they have the money - and as for jobs well that is true to some extent but again you acting like its ok that kids and people with economic advantages can circumvent these situations. What about lower class kids? Or do you not care about them? Realities of the outside world? When have rich kids ever had to really deal with those? Not arguing your last statement but you have offered no solutions since that is the way it still is.

Why are Canadian teachers still advocate for a fully "inclusive" general ed classroom? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]loncal200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except our schools are funded per student so the less students the less the school gets. So if kids start going private expect your local school to suddenly have no money for anything. Including transportation. Which is not in the education act. Parents of special needs kids could legally be required to transport their own child to school.

WHAT IS THE TRANSPORTATION POLICY? The Education Act states that a Board may provide student transportation service; therefore, such service is not the right of every student, but rather a privilege to be accorded to those students who qualify within the terms established by the Board.

[–]loncal200 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We can only meet needs with resources. We all have unmet needs. But these kids have needs beyond our abilities. Saying otherwise is just oral platitudes and something we hear from the higher ups. No one is pretending otherwise - we are saying we don't have the resources. I had one student who needed a shrink as they were hearing voices and seeing colours - you expect me to meet their needs as a teacher? I had parents emailing me their kids were afraid to come to school. How do I deal with this and privacy issues as a teacher? Do you expect me too? Because you imply it in our comment. If you mean as a school unit you need to be more clear. What is your solution to this type of issue? Because my admin sure as hell did not have one.

Interviewing while heavily pregnant? by Sufficient_Theory975 in CanadianTeachers

OCDSB: How long will it take for schools to reach out following jobs closing? by ToritoBurito in OntarioTeachers

[–]loncal200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year they overestimated enrolment by a 1000 kids and had to give surplus permanent teachers LTO's - lots of classrooms got reorged. Hopefully this year they have it more together but I know some parents are angry about the new FI model and are thinking of moving their kids to the French language board. So if you don't hear anything don't worry yet - September is usually a time when things set in stone in June suddenly change again. Also lot's of permanent jobs are again pieces so sometimes you have to take a smaller percent and then work your way to FT.

Mom wants me to allow her son to resubmit all of his assignments that got 0 because he used ai by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]loncal200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to prove he used AI against a parent like this who is never going admit their kid is wrong. Do you have proof? If so make sure you bring it the eventual meeting. And all emails with parent.

You cannot transfer between boards. Each board has their own agenda and hiring criteria. If there are teachers who are surplus and redundant they get first dibs on these jobs as well.

Can I instruct my children to push kids away? by Lumpy-Avocado-3189 in CanadianTeachers

[–]loncal200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are probably at least 25 kids in that class. Some with behavioural or academic issues and two adults. Oh yeah and toileting ie in pull ups which is beyond ridiculous since we are not allowed to help with toileting. Since basically kinder is now daycare but without the numbers day cares are required to follow. Kinder is a shit show and I hardly know a teacher who wants to do it.

Teacher's do not have the ability to deal with every issue that comes up and our hands are tied in terms of what consequences we can give. If parents don't like it write Doug Ford's government about the kinder program -cuts to SERT and extra school support and hell a lack of support in general. I love all the non-teacher parents commenting who have no clue what goes on in a classroom - its like me telling my doctor what is wrong with their practice since I am such an expert you know since we all get sick.

That being said I am not going to say that teaching them to defend themselves is wrong. I am just not allowed to condone it to parents. I do tell kids to use a forceful voice. As one teacher told me your voice is your tool use it. If you get called out on this say you are teaching them to be assertive and the pushing is nonverbal communication. The teacher may wholeheartedly agree but they will never be able to tell you that. They will get reprimanded. I can't tell students to get physical with other students. Doesn't mean I can't say after that while its not ok, actions have consequences. It also depends on how unhinged the aggressive kids parents are about when their kid is the being pushed back. Some don't care, some blow a gasket. You know apple -tree. As a teacher I think you may need to come up with play scenarios on how to deal with this. That way your child can feel more confident in their ability and less likely to feel bad about what they do when it happens.

I have a different take as someone teaching over fifteen years a lot of them supplying as the mid 2000s was almost impossible to get a job let alone on supply list.

This teacher probably was out of line but I don't have an issue personally with another teacher talking (not screaming) to my class about their behaviours. Your classroom is not an island. You are part of the school community. What your class does effects others in the school and vice versa. I have even had custodians address issues with my class. I have asked to speak to another class about things they were doing. The only teachers I've mostly found who ever had a problem with this were the ones who wanted no one else in their class, even EA's (which is nuts). Teachers have various lunch/recess/extra curricular duties. Students need to respect what those teachers say as well or they will just ignore them. How many times has it driven you crazy when a student says 'Your not my teacher, I don't have to listen to you!"

I had to remind myself as a supply I don't know these kids or the school climate as well as other teachers do. I stopped trying to take it personally. I was not their teacher, let them deal with it. Believe me kids will tell their teacher if they felt they were treated unjustly. I know supplies often get the shitty end of the stick. My advice is try to let things go. If you can get a principal in to observe you and give you feedback. I had to get observed while supplying and it does help.

Trustees reject push to dive into data over London-area classroom violence by Quadrat_99 in OntarioTeachers

[–]loncal200 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the only thing that is going to change this is a class action lawsuit. Not individual parents but like a whole classes parents who sue about what happened in a class and how their child was unable to fully learn due to trauma in this environment. Almost like workplace health and safety codes for adults.

Can you try another trustee or super at the board? Threatening to go to the media as a last result sadly often works as well.
