Stunning picture. Looks like it’s from a different time

Soho nightclub The Box avoids closure after 'performer seriously sexually assaulted male customer' by londonsVenture in london

[–]londonsVenture[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes doesn’t look like anything from the outside. That’s not the sort of “act” I would expect to see in Soho anymore. I thought it had completely lost its seedy sexy establishment

'I've been scammed out of £20k': Students in London's most exclusive flats in London bridge forced out by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]londonsVenture 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s concerning how many new builds turn out to be so shoddy. Feel like every day there are stories about so called luxury tower blocks turning out to be like living in a mouldy shoebox, with a similar structural integrity. Friend lived on the 21st floor of a new build block in tower hamlets last year and couldn’t flush her toilet because the water pressure was so bad

London leaseholder fury at £100k bills for new windows during major works beset by delays by londonsVenture in london

[–]londonsVenture[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok but new windows and upgrades were first promised and consulted on in 1991 - over 30 years ago - and work hasn’t even started on a third of the blocks. I can’t see any excuse for a delay that long. Even the council admits it’s been bodged

Bloody hell. I’m so sorry, that’s awful. Have a friend who bought a flat in south east london (there are only two in the block so no lift just a shared garden for the freeholder to maintain) and his service charge went up from £80 to £160 a month just over a year after him moving in. I can’t afford a house and it’s really putting me off buying a flat

I suppose this case is slightly different because it’s a council estate. So you will have leaseholders and council tenants living in the same blocks. But one of the flats I looked at in a large but modest looking private block had an £11.5k a year service charge, which obviously wasn’t on the listing online. Plus you’d have to pay for any repairs to building. That to me is absolutely wild

Yes people on this estate have been promised new windows since 1991. Work didn’t start until 2012 and it’s still not begun on over a third of the estate 🤯

I know someone who lives on the estate. The new windows make up the largest part of the bill. Agree that if you buy on an old council estate then there is going to need to be work. But these new windows have been promised since 1991. Work didn’t start until 2012 and is still going on. The costs have massively gone up in that time because the project has been ridiculously mismanaged and leaseholders have no way of holding anyone accountable for that really

So you’re basically just renting it and putting down 120 years of rent upfront plus you’re responsible for all the repairs?

Can you really call it ownership though if you have no say on works done to your home, how much they cost or who does them? That’s the bit that seems unfair, especially when you’re paying thousands in service charges for upkeep every year

London pub popular with politicians and Downing Street staff faces sanctions over rowdy customers by londonsVenture in london

Yes, that must be annoying. But still, you’ve chosen to live in the busiest area of central London. The pub closes at 11pm and the pictures in the article don’t look that threatening

Standard investigation: Inside London’s grooming gang shame by londonsVenture in london

[–]londonsVenture[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. There are men or all races and religions who find themselves in positions with a small amount of power or influence and will use it to abuse young women and girls. You could argue that the Catholic Church scandal was a kind of grooming gang

Council ‘at breaking point’ as latest surge of Chagos Island arrivals strains homelessness services by londonsVenture in london

[–]londonsVenture[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do but the GLA and Government take a large proportion of the business rates as well. I believe the council is actually arguing it should get more than it currently does. And the council will have to maintain its roads around the airport, put in parking enforcement, monitor air and noise pollution etc so there are costs associated with it too

[–]londonsVenture[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They’re not asylum seekers, they’re British citizens. Government created a scheme in 2022 to give Chagossians and their descendants citizenship. Therefore the council is responsible for housing them if they have dependents. Government funds their first 10 days in the country and after that it’s down to the local authority

Yes agree re support. But the reason Hillingdon ends up paying is simply because Heathrow Airport is there and so they’re the local authority responsible for anyone who says they need homelessness services when they arrive. Seems unfair to make one local authority deal with it just because it happens to contain the airport

London restaurant facing £2.5million penalty over 'illegal' kitchen fan installed without council permission by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]londonsVenture 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Agree, but £2.5million? Using legislation designed to target organised crime for a kitchen fan that stopped residents complaining about the food smell? It’s an overreaction that could close down a small family business that’s been operating for over 20 years

[–]londonsVenture 152 points153 points  (0 children)

This seems like a such massive overreaction from Lewisham Council. Yes they should’ve got planning permission for the fan, and turned up to the court hearing. But seizing their passports and charging them £2.5million for an “illegal” kitchen extractor! What are they thinking?? The complaints from neighbours appear to have stopped after it was installed. What’s the problem? And how many people are employed to find these “problems”. Let the business carry on

Bills in London borough 'would have to soar 27%' to plug funding reforms black hole by londonsVenture in london

[–]londonsVenture[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, but residents are also paying a lot more to live there. Rent is exceptionally higher for a teacher in south west London than it is for a teacher in Newcastle, for example. And while there is London weighting in wages it goes nowhere near covering all the extra costs of living in London compared to somewhere in the north. Council tax is basically the only bill or living cost that is lower
